Rusticated Class 7 student commits suicide
New Delhi, April 27 Zeenat Praveen, 16, committed suicide at her house in the Sangam Vihar area around 10 am on Friday when her brothers were in the other room and parents were outside. She was a student at the Bachan Prasad Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in the same area. “Before she committed suicide, she had gone to the school along with her mother after being summoned by the principal over the theft matter. There they were hauled up by the vice-principal. They accused Zeenat of stealing Rs 130 from a classmate,” said the deceased’s father Zahid Hussain. Distraught Hussain has donated the eyes of his only daughter. The victim’s mother alleged that her daughter was scolded badly by the vice- principal and the teacher. “They said Zeenat can not continue her studies in the school because of the theft. I requested them that she was a child and should be forgiven. But, they didn’t agree. They handed me a receipt saying that she has been rusticated from the school,” said her mother. “Zeenat started sobbing, but that did not help. They asked us to leave the school,” she said. As soon as they stepped out of the school, Zeenat ran towards her house. “I thought she was ashamed. When I entered the house, I saw her body hanging. I called up my sons who were upstairs and also called up a doctor. But my daughter was no more,” the victim’s mother added. The police then sent her body to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for an autopsy. Hussain alleged that the police was trying to downplay the incident. The police said they were investigating the matter, but a case was yet to be registered. The school authorities could not be reached for their comments. — IANS |
Parents up in arms against hike in fees
New Delhi, April 27 Sweating in the scorching heat, Manju Gauri, a 78-year-old woman, joined the protest and said, “I have three grandchildren. All go to schools. The recent fee hike has affected my home very badly.” “The school has already issued us two notices to pay the fees. How should we tell our children that we cannot make them study in that school anymore,” she asks with tears in her eyes. Many such parents protested against the schools and asked the government to take strict action against the school authorities. Reena Chowdhary, a resident of Pritampura says, “My children study in Sachdeva School. Recently, the school has hiked fees by 70 per cent. This has hit the budget hard. We are quite angry with the school authorities who are not ready to understand the position of the parents.” “I have two children studying at St. Angel’s School. In May, I have to pay Rs 32,000 as the school fees. This is more than my income. I don’t’ understand why the government is not taking any action against the school authorities. This is the limit,” says an irritated mother, Vaishali Kapoor. Later, the protest was even joined by the residents of the area and the commuters, who too raised their voices against the schools and the government. Some school-going children also stood on roads to join hands with their parents in protest. Shabina, a student of class tenth says, “I cannot leave my school as this is my board year. My father has filed a number of applications, saying that we are financially weak and need some concession. But our principal is not listening.” With the elections drawing near, BJP has already taken up the issue in some of its rallies and was supported by many such helpless parents. An agitated parent, Kulbhushan Chanan, says, “This is the last time when the parents are seeking the help of government. If the ministers keep quiet, we will ignore Congress in the coming Lok Sabha elections.” Meanwhile, the MCD has issued a notice to Ramjas Nursery Primary School for increasing fee without approval. |

Clarify stand on support to Punjabis, A.C. Chaudhary told
Faridabad, April 27 Addressing a public meeting of Punjabis here to canvass support for the HJC (BL) nominee, Batra welcomed Chaudhary’s open support to the BSP nominee in Sonipat and the HJC (BL) nominee in Karnal on the ground that they are from the Punjabi community. However, the alleged reports of his hobnobbing with the Congress leadership even while his party is yet to take a decision on his resignation have confused the Punjabis, he added Batra said that Chaudhary must clarify his position, explicitly, as his apparent “double standards” had not only confused the Punjabis but also “demoralised “ them. He said that it was imperative on the part of Chaudhary to explain his position as the secretary general of the BSP, Man Singh Manhera has stated that he (Chaudhary) was in touch with his party. “The shifting stand of Chaudhary just when the election campaign was on has sent out conflicting messages among the Punjabis,” he added. The public meeting was organised by Punjabi leaders affiliated to the HJC (BL). Batra asserted that he would also quit all posts from the HJC (BL) and work for the welfare of the Punjabis if Chaudhary resigned from the primary membership of the Congress. The working president of the All India Punjabi Ekta Manch, I.J.Kalia, expressed concern over the alleged efforts by the main political parties, especially both the Congress and the BJP, to keep the Punjabis on the sidelines of political power in the state. He cautioned that unless the Punjabis are united, they would continue to be exploited by the political parties. Later talking to newsmen, Batra said that the HJC (BL) has proved that it was closer to the Punjabis as it gave tickets to Punjabis at three parliamentary constituencies in Haryana. When pointed out that the ruling Congress in Haryana had made two Punjabis Lakhman Dass Arora and A.C.Chaudhary as cabinet ministers and Paramveer Singh and Anil Thakaar as parliamentary secretaries of Haryana Vidhan Sabha, Batra evaded a reply. He again clammed up when pointed out that nearly a dozen members of the Punjabi community were Congress MLAs. |
Court questions MCD on public toilets
New Delhi, April 27 A division bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and S.K. Mishra told the MCD counsel, “We are not satisfied. The pathetic state of public toilets was highlighted by Shahana Sheikh, a final year student of economics at Lady Sri Ram (LSR) College, who undertook a tour of slums and the outskirts of Delhi from May to July 2008. Sheikh had said the MCD, in its 2007 report, claimed there were 3,192 public conveniences in the capital but she found only 1,534 toilets during her survey. In her report titled ‘Public Toilets in Delhi — An emphasis on the Facilities for Women in Slum Areas’, Sheikh says only 132 urinals are available for women and most of them are in a dilapidated state. “The issue of public toilets affects women the most, especially the poor,” Sheikh said.
