One-year-old among 7 killed in mishaps
Jalandhar, April 13 A class X student, Namrata was riding her bicycle on the way to her school on Ladowali Road when the accident took place. A truck heading towards Jalandhar mowed her along with her cycle. According to the police, Namrata was living in PAP the complex along with her family after her father Rajeshwar Prasad, hailing from Madhya Pradesh, was posted in Jalandhar. The police has arrested truck driver Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Jaffarwal village, near Dhariwal in Gurdaspur district, and the vehicle involved in the crime has been impounded. A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against him. In another case, a cyclist, Anil Karkata, a resident of Dashmesh Nagar, was run over by a tractor-trailer at Boota village, near here. The driver of the tractor-trailer fled leaving his vehicle behind. The body was sent to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The tractor driver has been booked for rash and negligent driving. Meanwhile, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl was burnt alive while her parents sustained serious burn injuries in a fire that engulfed their room in the Old Age Home, located on the Ladhewali road, early this morning. The incident occurred when Harish Sharma, father of the deceased, Nisha, woke up and lighted the LPG stove. The already leaking gas caught fire thus resulting in the tragedy. As she was sleeping, Nisha was burnt alive while her father Harish and mother Sonia sustained 70 to 80 per cent burn injuries. The injured were rushed to a private hospital and their condition is said to be critical. Hearing shrikes of the victims, families living on the premises rushed for help but to not avail. People swung into rescue operation and anyhow managed to put off the blaze and rushed the injured to a private hospital in the Rama Mandi area. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Harish, a pundit by profession, had been staying along with his wife and daughter in a single-room accommodation on the Old Age Home premises for the past couple of years. The body has been sent to the local Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination by the police. Batala: Satnam Singh and his daughter Simarjeet Kaur were killed in a road accident near Malakpur village on the Batala-Kalanaur road today. According to information, they were on the way to their village on a bicycle, when an Innova vehicle hit their bicycle from behind. Simarjeet died on the spot, while her father sustained serious injuries. Satnam was rushed to the Civil Hospital from where he was referred to Amritsar, but he died on the way. The police has sent the body of Simarjeet for a post-mortem examination. A case under sections 304-A, 279, 427 and 337 of the IPC has been registered. Nawanshahr: Lalit Kumar of Sahnewal (Ludhiana) and Rajesh Kumar of the local Mohalla Laroyian died in separate road accidents which took place near Pojewal village on the Garhshankar-Anandpur Sahib road and Alachaur village on the Nawanshahr-Garhshankar road, respectively. |

Jalandhar, April 13 According to the police, the man was hacked to death and later his body dumped in the fields.In another incident, the body of a youth was recovered by the Railway Police from railway line near Rama Mandi. The police has found injury marks on the neck of the body and apprehend that the killer might have dumped the body on the railway track in an attempt to destroy the evidences. Both bodies have been sent to the Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination and cases have been registered.

90th anniversary of Jallianwala Bagh massacre observed
Amritsar, April 13 Among others who laid the wreath on Jallianwala Bagh Memorial included Deputy Commissioner Bhagwant Singh and district police chief Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh besides representatives of political parties, kin of freedom fighters and victims of the massacre. The whole atmosphere was vibrant with patriotism which was substantiated by the tunes of patriotic songs played by a police band. |

‘Tampering of bagh blot on society’
Jalandhar, April 13 He was here to deliver a lecture on “Importance of Jallianwala Bagh massacre in the freedom movement and in the contemporary times” on the 97th foundation day of the Ghadar Party. Speaking on the issue, he said the change in the upkeep of the Jallianwala Bagh would deprive the future generations from knowing its significance in the freedom struggle. “We need to raise this issue for mass awareness,” he added.

Independent councillor Tony joins BJP
Jalandhar, April 13 Soon after his joining the BJP at a function held at the local Sekhon Grand Hotel today, Tony said it was necessary for ensuring the development of the localities falling under his ward (No 35) to join a political party and that was why he joined the BJP. Welcoming him into the BJP fold, Kalia said Hans’ campaigning would get a boost after Tony’s joining the BJP. SAD district president Gurcharan Singh Channi, BJP district chief Ravi Mahendru and its state media co-convener Rajat Mahendru were present on the occasion. Tony has been an independent councillor three times in a row since 1997. He won the MC elections by defeating his nearest rival then district BJP president Subash Sood with a margin of 3,200 votes in 1997. Similarly, he emerged victorious in the 2002 MC elections with a margin of 1,600 votes by defeating his opponents Krishan Lal Ghai (BJP) and Joginder Pal Bawa (Congress). Tony won the MC elections in 2007 with a margin of 775 votes by defeating BJP candidate Gurbax Mintoo, reportedly close to Kalia, and Congress candidate (now late) Sumir Kumar Billa. |

Adhyapak Dal to protest against EC
Tarn Taran , April 13 Baj Singh Khehra, state general secretary of the organisation, and Parwinder Singh, general secretary of the Mulazam Front, while addressing the district unit of the organisation, said here today that a meeting of the general body of the organisation had been called to chalk out the action plan. They said the organisation would organise protests during the election rehearsals held on the assembly segment level. |
