Umesh Dewan
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 4
Breaking his silence over the case of BJP legislator from Vikasnagar Munna Singh Chauhan, state parliamentary affairs minister and BJP spokesman Parkash Pant today said the party has not yet received his resignation letter.

Playing down the reports of Munna's discontentment with the party, Pant said, "We have only got to know from media reports that Munna has submitted his resignation to the Speaker. As far as his position in party is concerned, he is still in BJP as we have not received his resignation."

When asked whether the party is contemplating any action against Munna in wake of his statements, wherein he had repeatedly criticised the party, Pant denied any such move.

Speaking to mediapersons at the BJP headquarters here today, Pant said the manifesto of the BJP, released yesterday, has all the elements required for the progress of the nation and the welfare of the masses.

Terming the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh as one of the weakest PM India had ever got, Pant said the UPA government had miserably failed on the economic front.

"There have been several terrorist attacks during the UPA regime just because of the soft approach of the Central government," he said, adding that woes of the common man had increased manifold because of the wrong policies of the UPA government.

Pant said it was matter of shame that during its five-year rule, the UPA had failed to spend funds amounting to Rs 24,000 crore earmarked for the armed forces.

Flaying the UPA for the alleged "misuse" of the power, he said if voted to power the NDA will ensure progress and welfare of all sections of society.

Haridwar, April 4
In what could be termed as major gain for the Congress in Haridwar, Harpal Sathi, a three-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ex-MP who had later joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), today joined the Congress party.

He along with Padam Singh Saini, and All-India Muslim Teli Conference vice- president Varis Ali joined the Congress.

Election pundits and party workers were taken by surprise by this sudden development that took place at the inauguration of a Congress party office at Devpura in Haridwar, without any prior notice.

Notably, Sathi is a three-time member of parliament from Haridwar seat. He won in 1996, 1998 and 1999 as BJP candidate. Last year, he left BJP to join BSP.

Meanwhile, Harish Rawat, Congress candidate from Haridwar, expressed hope that collective efforts of party workers will result in Congress regaining the seat after two decades.

"This election will be the one that will defeat communalism, casteism and regionalism. The country needs development, not these diversions," said Rawat.

Kunwar Pranab Singh 'Champion', Congress legislator from Laksar who himself was a front- runner for the ticket from Haridwar, also expressed solidarity with Rawat.

Others present on the occasion included city Congress chief OP Chauhan, former municipal chairman Satpal Brahmachari and party spokesman Rajiv Rastogi, among others.

Come polls, blame game begins

Dehradun, April 4
The general secretary of Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) Mantri Prasad Naithani today lashed out at Chief Minister Maj Gen BC Khanduri (retd) calling him an “obstacle” in the way of development of the hill state.

The Congress leader claimed that the party had concrete information that development works in the home constituency of the CM were hanging fire for the past two years. He also accused Khanduri of misusing the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

“When the home constituency of the CM is in utter neglect, how can we expect any development in rest of the state,” said Naithani, who is also the party’s election incharge for Dhumakot, Lansdowne and Ramnagar segments.

Giving a detailed account of the snail’s pace at which development works were progressing ever since Khanduri took over the reins as CM, Naithani, a former Uttarakhand minister, said, “Work on 16 roads in Dhumakot and Lansdowne, sanctioned during the previous Congress regime, is yet to begin. Likewise, work on the Dabar village bridge is incomplete from the past two years, despite the fact that Khanduri has the charge of PWD department.”

The Congress leader further alleged that various water pumping projects, including Nainidanda and Dhumakot, were lying in cold storage. “The government is sitting over their detailed project reports due to which people are struggling to get water for even their daily needs,” Naithani alleged, adding that funds sanctioned for the beautification of Nainidanda Temple Lake are also lying unutilised.

The Congress leader held Khanduri responsible for the miserable state of education in these areas, and alleged that in Lansdowne-Rikhnikhal-Haldukhal-Dhumakot belt there were no telephone lines. Naithani also accused the BJP MP from Pauri, Lt Gen (Retd) TPS Rawat, of completely ignoring the problems of the constituency.

Meanwhile, rubbishing the accusations, BJP leader Davinder Bhasin said, “Congress is well aware of the fact that they are a sinking ship in Uttarakhand and are heading for a shameful defeat. Out of frustration they are levelling false acquisitions.”

“Our government is undertaking all development works in a systematic manner,” he added.

Dehradun, April 4
Nano, the world’s cheapest car with the ‘Made in Uttarkhand’ label is all set to market brand Uttarakhand across the country and the world in a big way. The car, which was expected to reach Dehradun, today would probably reach here on April 5. The truck carrying the Nano cars has been stranded at Saharanpur, according to Raghav Oberoi, the local Tata motors’ dealer.

The Rs 1 lakh or $ 2,500 car, which is being produced in Tata’s Pantnagar plant in the state, is sure to act as a vehicle for marketing brand Uttarkhand, a fact which the state government was mindful while bending backwards and fine tuning its industrial policy to attract corporates like Tata.

Youngsters are excited over the four-wheeled small wonder, which is going to arrive in the city for display over the weekend. For bikers like Sumit Rana, a quick visit to Musoorie with friends will now be possible soon.

“A Nano, full of friends, would take us to the hill top faster and it is going to be more fun than taking two mobikes,” said the management student.

Others have been doing their bit to ride the small wonder car. “I have been saving money to book Nano ever since it was unveiled by Tata Motors at the Auto Show,” said 19-year-old Pinki Pant, a student. In addition to the excitement among the prospective buyers, the state government officials too are looking forward to Nano as they hope the car’s birthplace, Pantnagar, would get a lot of global attention in the process.

At the time of Nano’s launched for sale CM B C Khanduri too joined the Nano fan club and said, “It is a moment of joy and big achievement that the first cheapest car Nano has been launched from Pantnagar.” The state is expecting to earn revenue of Rs. 200 crore through distribution of the small car.

Officials of the State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand (SIIDCU) credit the present of Nano plant in the state to the flexibility shown by them in ensuring that Tata came to the state.

“For us it was a prestige issue. We wanted to have the project at any cost,” said an official.
