2 robbers hurt in Aur
encounter
Death of a motorcyclist near Mahilpur in
Hoshiarpur district almost a fortnight ago has also raised doubt on the working of the police. The motorcyclist allegedly shot himself after being chased by the police. However, the family members were of the view that the man was shot dead.
Jalandhar/Nawanshahr March 9 Armed with weapons, the robbers had allegedly been active in robbing commuters for gold and other valuables at a T-junction near Apra at gun-point. The miscreants were reportedly using an Indica car with a ‘fake’ registration number (PB-12D-6187). SSP, Jalandhar, RK Jaiswal revealed that the case came to light after the miscreants robbed off almost four persons including an NRI woman, Jaswinder Kaur of Bara Pind, who informed the Apra police post. After her complaint, a police party comprising cops Jaswinder Singh, Kamaljit Singh and Jugal Kishore reached the spot and found the car-borne miscreants robbing Balihar Singh, a resident of Gumtala village. After noticing the cops, the robbers sped away from the scene towards Mukandpur but the cops chased the car in a Scorpio owned by Balihar Singh, the SSP said. As the robbers were about to enter the Nawanshahr district, the Jalandhar police sought help from SSP Nawanshahr Rakesh Aggarwal in nabbing them. A police party from Nawanshahr was also pressed to service. The hassled robbers fired at the Scorpio in which a police party was chasing them. This lead to a fire exchange following which two robbers on the back seat of the Indica car sustained bullet injuries on their backs. Since the police had put nakas at Mukandpur, Aur and Chakdana, the miscreants were nabbed at Aur. The injured were identified as Hansraj and Amanjit Singh while Kulvir and Amarjit were arrested. The police said during questioning, Amarjit Singh claimed to be a resident of Doraha near Ludhiana. The injured were first taken to the Civil Hospital, Phillaur, and were then referred to Civil Hospital, Jalandhar. The police claimed to have recovered three country-made pistols, a sickle, four live cartridges and certain empty shells besides the robbed jewellery and other valuables from their possession. A case has been registered under sections 392, 398, 378 and 307 of the Arms Act against the suspects at Phillaur police
station. Meanwhile, the injured were hospitalised at the Jalandhar Civil Hospital at about 5. 30 pm. The condition of the injured was stable as per the doctors attending them. |

He said currently sewerage channel was situated above water supply which was causing diseases among residents. Malik claimed that nearly 70 per cent work of Rs 170-crore grant from the state government was about to complete. BJP: Sukhbir reminds of Indira during emergency
Jalandhar, March 9 Taking the president of the alliance party head-on in a press conference at the Punjab Press Club, Grewal, who is state BJP chief of the investor cell, said, “The modus operandi of Sukhbir Singh Badal is similar to that of Indira Gandhi, the late Congress tyrant, during emergency in June 1975. But Sukhbir is one step ahead of Indira as he also indulges in forced takeovers and consolidation of cable TV networks through companies such as Shan-e-Punjab, DIGI Cable and Fastway Cable.” He even accused the Deputy CM of misusing power against stakeholders of media houses who don’t toe his line. “For a quick buck, Sukhbir has gone ahead to establish his own enterprises and TV channels such as PTC for self propaganda. Since Sukhbir now controls 95 per cent of the cable TV networks; Punjab Today and Zee Punjabi news channels have been simply blocked out from the cable TV networks just because they have tried to air information unacceptable to the Deputy CM”, he alleged. “Sukhbir shouldn’t create an emergency-like situation and repeat historic mistakes orchestrated during an internal emergency”, added Grewal. He stressed upon the fact that free mass media is important for a democratic society. He urged the CM to intervene and ask Sukhbir to take corrective action else this may result in heavy losses to the alliance in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as opposition leaders like Captain Amarinder Singh and his adulator Sukhpal Singh Khaira were using the situation as an opportunity to encourage false propaganda against the SAD-BJP alliance. |

Project Deadline Slips
Nawanshahr, March 9 More than a month ago, the district administration started the project, which was scheduled to be completed in 7 to 10 days. In order to widen Chandigarh Chowk, encroachments near Kumar Bakery and from Chandigarh Chowk to Ambedkar Chowk were removed. But the work was left incomplete. The incomplete work has been causing a lot of inconvenience to the public as the parking of vehicles in front of hotels and restaurants on the main road has been proving a hurdle for the traffic. Besides, it has been posing danger to the two-wheelers and pedestrians. Now, the administration has started removing encroachments with the help of a JCV machine on the other side of the road for constructing slip way. The residents, while appreciating the slip way project have urged the district administration to expedite its implementation. Two former Congress CMs, Harcharan Singh Brar and Capt Amarinder Singh, had laid the foundation stones of a bypass during the fag-end of their tenures in 1996 and 2006, respectively. Two years ago, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at Khatkar Kalan had mooted the idea of constructing an elevated road. But nothing concrete has been done so far. |
