Jalandhar, March 7
Officials of the Town Planning Department today were at loggerheads with the Deputy Mayor over the demolition of a house coming up on encroached government land in Avtar Nagar.

The officials managed to pull down the structure but faced stiff opposition from Deputy Mayor Parvesh Tangri who openly came to the aid of a labourer who was raising a permanent structure over the pond area. Tangri went to the extent of blaming officials for demanding bribe from the poor man.

The team managed to come back safely after the action before Tangri could manage a crowd of hundreds of residents who raised anti-MC slogans.

The officials, on the other hand, condemned the treatment meted out to them by the Deputy Mayor. “There is too much political interference in our work. One should not stoop down to the level of appeasing the vote bank even at the cost of letting the prime government land get encroached permanently. The area can be beautifully converted into a park, but the politicians do not want anything positive to happen here,” they rued.

Tangri, however, remained adamant on his stand, “The MC officials have been unable to get scores of encroachments in Bhargo Camp removed. There are scores of other encroachments in Azad Nagar that falls near the demolition site. But I fail to understand why they are after this poor man.”

Amritsar, March 7
Social and trade organisations came forward to providing succour to 35-odd Pakistani Hindu families here today following a report highlighting their plight in these columns. The Amritsar Tea Traders Association and social worker Ashok Kapur offered them grocery items like flour, cereals, tea, sugar and shawls.

The Pak Hindu families were not ready to return to their motherland fearing persecution at the hands of Taliban. Growing religious intolerance pushed these families from the North Western Frontier Province (NWFP) to look for safe shelter.

Hardwari Lal, who came here along with his family, said they got relief as they had been allowed to stay here for the next one year.

He said not only minorities but also educated and progressive Muslims were scared of the changing scenario following intrusion of Taliban in the interiors of the NWFP.

The families requested the government to allow them to settle in India so that their children could get suitable education.

NRI’s murder: Husband, 2 others held

Hoshiarpur, March 7
With the arrest of three killers, including the husband and brother-in-law of deceased NRI Kuldip Kaur, who was shot dead while she was going to pay obeisance at a gurdwara on March 5, the district police today claimed to have solved the blind murder within 48 hours of its occurrence.

The arrested persons were identified as Kuldip Kaur’s husband Manjit Singh (presently residing in Canada) who hails from Lehali Khurd village, Satinder Singh of Bassi Shah Mohammad and Charanjit Singh, brother of Manjit Singh.

Addressing mediapersons here, SSP Parmod Ban said two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths shot Kuldip Kaur dead when she, along with her neighbour, was going to pay obeisance at Gurdwara Sant Baba Harnam Singh at Jian village.

An FIR under sections 302, 34 and 120-B of the IPC and sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered at the Sadar police station in this connection. During investigation, the police found out that Kuldip Kaur’s husband Manjit Singh had illicit relations with Rani who was also residing in Canada and was pregnant. Manjit Singh wanted to divorce Kuldip Kaur.

Kuldip Kaur and Manjit Singh also had a joint insurance policy for $ 4 lakh in Canada and the latter wanted to grab the money. Later, Manjit Singh, along with his brother Charanjit Singh, Satinder Singh and Iqbal Singh of Makhangarh, hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Kuldip Kaur.

Manjit Singh lured Satinder and Iqbal that he would take them to Canada.

On March 5, Satinder Singh and Iqbal Singh reached Jian village and fired at Kuldip Kaur with a pistol and fled on their motorcycle. Kuldip was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. The police seized a .315-bore country-made pistol, one empty shell and four live cartridges which the accused had purchased from Uttar Pradesh, and a motorcycle used in the crime, said Parmod Bhan, adding that raids were being conducted to nab Iqbal Singh. — OC

PSEB XII Exam
Chemistry paper full of ‘errors’
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, March 7
While terming the three sets of question papers of chemistry of class XII against the general guidelines of the Punjab School Education Board, subject experts Dr Anil Kumar, Rupinder Kaur and Balihar Singh Bains have pointed out errors in the question papers.

“As per the guidelines prescribed by the board for setting the question papers, approximately 40 per cent of the questions are to be based on the general theory and about 30 per cent each on the general understanding and application of the theory,” said experts, adding that the paper-setter had changed the general structure of the question paper by introducing unnecessary bifurcation of the questions, thus making it lengthy and confusing for the students.

While divulging details to The Tribune, Dr Anil Kumar said in sets A and C, a question “What is Anoxia?” has been asked, which was mainly concerned with biology.

“Besides, there are questions in sets A and C, which are quite confusing for the students,” said experts. They said, in question 23 (b) of set A, the word “ether” had been spelled as “either”. In question 13 of set C, the term “0.20 m” has been given instead of “0.20 M” as symbol “m” denotes “molality” and symbol “M” denotes “molarity”. Similarly, the difference between “Amine” and “Ammine” had been asked, which was irrelevant.
