Tendulkar expected to
be fit for 4th ODI
Christchurch, March 9 He destroyed the New Zealand bowling attack, smashing 15 fours and five sixes to record his 43rd ODI hundred before the injury prematurely curtailed his chase for the record ODI score of 194. Tendulkar underwent an MRI scan at a local hospital today and although the team management did not divulge the result, it is learnt that the extent of damage in his abdomen was not as bad as initially feared. The 36-year-old Mumbaikar is reportedly feeling more comfortable than yesterday. However, the team management will have to take a call on his fitness by tomorrow. India will meet New Zealand in the first of three Tests at Seddon Park on March 18-22, in what is likely to be the last time the 35-year-old tours New Zealand. ''Towards the end, I was hopeful I would be able to get it (200) if I stayed there to the 50th over, it was in the vicinity,'' Tendulkar said yesterday. ''I got hit in my abs off (Iain) O'Brien (in the previous match) and the muscle was quite sore. I knew with every big hit I was damaging it. There came a stage where I just knew I couldn't go on,'' he
added. — UNI Kiwis drop Southee, recall Thompson New Zealand on Monday dropped paceman Tim Southee and drafted in all rounder Ewen Thompson in the 12-man squad announced for the fourth cricket one-dayer against India to be played at the Seddon Park, Hamilton, on Wednesday. Southee paid the price of becoming New Zealand's most expensive bowler by conceding 0-105 as India raced to 392 for four in the third one-dayer yesterday. Thompson, who made his international debut in the Twenty20 series against the West Indies in December, replaced injured Ian Butler. Butler, who has been laid low by a thigh strain, will be available for selection for the fifth ODI to be played in Auckland (March 14). Chairman of the selection panel,, Glenn Turner, said: "Ian Butler was omitted due to injury, after suffering a thigh strain during last night's ODI at Christchurch. But he is likely to be available for consideration for the final ODI in Auckland on Saturday. The squad for that game would be named after the Hamilton match." Skipper Daniel Vettori, who missed the match to be with his wife for the birth of their first child, will also rejoin the team in Hamilton. Peter McGlashan has been retained as wicketkeeper while Brendon McCullum will continue to play as a batsman. India lead the series 2-0, with one match being washed out at Wellington. The squad: Daniel Vettori (captain), Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum, Peter McGlashan, Kyle Mills, Iain O'Brien, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Ewen Thompson. — PTI |
India alone can host 2011 WC, says Bindra
Sydney, March 9 While there is a huge question mark on Pakistan's chances of co-hosting the quadrennial event, the sitution in the other countries in India's neighbourhood is not exactly peaceful. Bangladesh recently witnessed a mutiny by the Bangladesh Rifles - the para-military force guarding the country's borders, while Sri Lanka is the stage for a bloody struggle between Tamil rebels and its army. However, Bindra expressed confidence that the show will go on. ''We won't jump to that conclusion, but if the situation is bad, India is big enough to stage the competition,'' he was quoted as saying by 'The Telegraph'. Bindra pointed out that India will stage the hugely popular Indian Premier League (IPL) from next month which will feature more matches than the World Cup. ''The IPL has 59 matches spread over eight franchises. The next World Cup has 49 matches,'' he observed. Asserting that the IPL would go as per schedule, despite the reservations of some players, Bindra said Pakistan should not start playing at neutral venues. ''That is a booby-trap and they will cease to be a Test-playing country. How do youngsters watch and learn the game if Pakistan do not play at home?'' he asked. ''Give Pakistan a chance to get their act together - and they must ensure presidential-style security. But, ultimately, this is something that cannot be tackled by cricket administrators but by global powers.''

India also unsafe to tour: Crowe
Christchurch, March 9 "The time has come for the cricketing world to accept that touring Pakistan is an absolute no-go zone ever again. "In May last year, just 24 hours before I flew with the IPL Royal Challengers to Jaipur for a nothing Twenty20 match, eight bombs went off three-minutes apart killing over 100 civilians and tourists as it ripped through the crowded Pink Palace," Crowe wrote in a local daily. "That's why you can't just isolate Pakistan. Lives have been taken on a regular basis from terror attacks in India over the last year in major cities like Mumbai in November the worst Bangalore in July and Delhi in September. These were significant and show it's happening almost monthly," Crowe said. "Having toured all around India with the IPL, the worst and scariest aspect is that when you leave your hotel you have no further control on anything. Once you start travelling by road you are at the mercy of every little tuk tuk, every intersection and every traffic jam," Crowe added. The former Kiwi captain admitted that terror attacks were possible anywhere in the world but said probability was much higher in the sub-continent. "Maybe, though, someone, even the most famous of all, Sachin Tendulkar, might get severely hurt or disabled from a flying piece of shrapnel or glass. "Yes, it could happen in London, or Paris, or Madrid, as it did in the most alarming manner of all in New York. But the reality is that the odds and the feeling of those odds shortening are against you in the sub-continent," he said. "Bottom line is that never again will anyone trust anyone or anything in that environment. There is no longer a thing called a "guarantee". That's now hogwash," he said.

Pak eves back on track with win
Canberra, March 9 Consistent contributions from the batters helped Pakistan reach 161 for 7 in 50 overs after Urooj Mumtaz won the toss and elected to bat first. In reply, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 104 in 39.4 overs, despite a fighting half-century by captain Shashikala Siriwardena. While all the Pakistan players contributed evenly to their team's cause, fast bowler Qanita Jalil was the star of Pakistan victory's when she broke the back of the Sri Lankan top order and finished with figures of 8-0-33-3 having earlier hit a rapid 19 off 20 balls. Qanita was very well supported by all-rounder Sana Mir who followed up her priceless 22 not out with 2-18. This was Pakistan's first-ever victory over Sri Lanka in 19 ODIs and also its maiden win in the World Cup after six straight defeats. Pakistan showed it was a quick learning team as it batted for full 50 overs and managed to collect a decent total. Other notable contributors were Sana Mir (22 not out from 37 balls), Sajida Shah (21 off 67 balls) and Urooj (20 off 43 balls). Battered Bagan low on morale: coach
New Delhi, March 9 Mohun Bagan's amazing run in the league was cut short when they lost the Kolkata derby to East Bengal and slipped further with a loss to Churchill Brothers in the very next match. The twin losses have pushed Mohun Bagan off the pedestal and they are now five points adrift of leaders Sporting Clube de Goa with 33 points from 17 matches. "The defeats definitely affected the team's morale and made a lot of things difficult for us where in we have to make compromises on our AFC Cup campaign," Bencherifa told PTI from Hims, north of capital Damascus. The Moroccan points to the team's long season since the IFA Premier Division League and feels his players are exhausted coming to the business end of the I-League. "We can't play some of our best players in the first two matches of the AFC Cup due to injury and exhaustion and will have to make some forced changes tomorrow," said Bencherifa who added that priority for the moment would be the I-League. "We are just five points behind and a lot can happen. For the moment we need keep things under control in the AFC Cup and with the I-League getting over within a month, we can then turn our attention towards the continent," he said. Mohun Bagan's talisman Jose Barreto is recovering from a lower back injury and has been rested for the match. That means the green-and-maroons will go in with only two imports - Brazilian midfielder Marcos Pereira and Nigerian defender Peter Odafe. Al Karama, one of the top Syrian clubs, have a rich history in the Asian Champions League, finishing runners-up in 2006 and reaching the quarter-finals twice - in 2007 and 2008. — PTI |

Clean sweep by China
Birmingham, March 9 China had won all five in a world championship before, but that was in Beijing back in 1987, and this, in European conditions, was a far tougher task. It was also the first clean sweep in the open or amateur era since 1948. The success which really made it possible was that of Wang Yihan, the young unseeded player from Shanghai, who beat Tine Rasmussen, the top-seeded titleholder from Denmark, 21-19, 21-23, 21-11, and became the first to win the women's singles at only the second attempt. And the success which attracted the most attention was the repeat of the Olympic men's singles final, in which Lin Dan again beat Lee Chong Wei, the world number one from Malaysia, in straight games, though this was a closer match than the one at the Games. The Chinese star beat the ambitious, hard-working Malaysian 21-19, 21-12 after beginning rather patchily, then grabbing his first important chance, and accelerating away impressively towards the end. Asked how or why he won, Lin said: "It wasn't tactical or anything - we are both good players. It was more psychological. I was focused and calm. — AFP |

We are trying to involve foreign clubs next year.” |
