Jalandhar, November 29
There are over 18,556 HIV positive patients in the state. The actual figure might be much more, for this number corresponds only with the test reports that have been confirmed in the 56 integrated counselling and testing centres (ICTCs) across Punjab.

Nearly 450 cases have been detected positive in the ICTC centre at the civil hospital, Jalandhar, this year. It is in view of this alarming number that the district health authorities have launched an extensive AIDS awareness campaign this time.

Even as World AIDS Day falls two days later, the programmes have already begun. A counselling session was held for truck drivers in the Bharat Petroleum complex yesterday. There is another such educational programme scheduled for the ITBP jawans on Monday.

Civil surgeon Dr S.S. Walia said his department had tied up with a private FM channel for organising “nukkad” nataks on the theme around the city. He said he was planning to hold a district-level AIDS Day function at Nakodar on Monday.

Students would take out an awareness rally across the town and villages. Besides, a declamation contest would also be held.

Dr H.S. Lamba of the civil hospital said a declamation contest, a painting competition and orientation programmes would also be organised on the day by the Red Ribbon Clubs of various colleges at Pushpa Gujral Science
City on Monday.

Several NGOs have also been roped in for the programmes.

Prof Anoop Watts of the Jalandhar Citizens Welfare Council said he would organise a mind exercise with students of DAV College on the day. The students would be asked to put in slips, with their queries related to AIDS, in a box kept on the campus throughout the day. “This will help the otherwise reluctant students to come forward to clarify their doubts while concealing their identity. We will answer these queries one by one during the course of a seminar that afternoon,” he said.

Lakhbir Singh of Pahal said, “I am planning to conduct a lecture for the youth in some institute so that I am able to divert their attention towards creative pursuits. I believe that most of our youth are groping in the dark without any direction in their life. Naturally, such youth are liable to get lost. By apprising them of various openings in different careers, we can take them out of the risk group.”

Mumbai attacks inhuman, says Makkar
Tribune Reporters

Amritsar, November 29
Different organisations and associations strongly condemned the dastardly and one of most daring terrorist attacks on the financial capital of the country.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar said this was the most audacious attempt to destabilise the country, which resulted in the killing of hundreds of people, including foreigners. No religion in the world subscribed to the theory of killing and perpetrating crime, he said. He described this incident as most inhuman and unfortunate. He urged the people to come together on one platform to fight terrorism.

Meanwhile, the All-India Anti-terrorist front, Bajrang Dal, the BJP and the Vishva Hindu Parishad today organised protest rallies and burned the effigies of terrorism and Pakistan. They criticised the ISI which, they alleged, was behind this attack in Mumbai.

Hoshiarpur: The All-India Shiromani Akali Dal is anguished over an increase in terrorist activities in the country which pose a serious threat to the unity and integrity of the nation. Talking to this correspondent today, AISAD president Jaswant Singh Mann said the communal tension between Hindus and Muslims had never eased completely since partition in 1947.

The Congress and the BJP were more interested in politicking rather than working for the nation with a vision.

Terrorism both from the public and the state had become a national malady. Peace was being threatened in South-East Asia due to terrorist activities. Violent activities by the LTTE, extremism in Jammu and Kashmir and north-eastern states posed a big threat to democracy and national peace.

The AISAD will convene a re-consolation conference at New Delhi in the second week of January, 2009, inviting all political parties, social and cultural groups to find solutions to the problems faced by the country, Mann said.

Meanwhile, ChristianFront Punjab president Lawrence Choudhary and Pastors Association president Pastor Kuldip Wich and other office-bearers of the association condemned the terrorist attack in Mumbai, killing more than 156 and injuring about 400 persons.

Addressing a joint press conference here today, they said the people from all walks of life should maintain harmony for the unity and integration of the country. The Hindus, the Muslims, the Sikhs and the Christians were citizens of secular India and had collectively contributed for its development.

They said their organisations, along with the Balmik Sabha, the SAD (A), Dal Khalsa, the Ravi Dass Sabha and the Dr Ambedkar Force, would jointly organise a mass chetna rally on December 4 at Hoshiarpur for the unity and harmony of the country.

Bahujan Samaj Party coordinator Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi also condemned the killing of innocent people during the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai. In a press release here today, Sukhi said terrorists and separatists posed a serious threat to the independence of the country. Many of the leaders of various political parties were trying to divide the country on communal lines, he alleged.

He appealed to the government to take stern action against the forces which were trying to disintegrate the country.

Two policemen Ramkrishan and Satnam Singh of the GRP found the girl in the train parked at the railway platform. The GRP authorities said it seemed that the family had forgotten the baby. However, SHO Manjit Singh of the GRP police station said that the police was also looking into the other possibilities. He said they had given the photographs to the print and electronic media.

Meanwhile, the GRP immediately informed its office at Patiala and other respective police chowkis at various railway stations. However, till the filing of the report no family member of the girl had come forward to claim her. Therefore, it was being suspected that the family had deliberately left the girl.

Qualitative change ‘must for educational system’

Nawanshahr, November 29
Deputy commissioner Nilkanth Avhad has been working on bringing about qualitative change in the educational system of the schools. He visited a number of schools in Balachaur on Saturday.

He issued a strong warning to the teachers and gave them a month’s time to improve the standard of education. He took serious note of the presence of cattle and rehras, etc, and asked the sarpanch to immediately clear the passage. He found 50 per cent children absent at the pre-nursery centre.

At Adoana village, the DC found the anganwari worker absent. Only the anganwari helper was present there with just three children out of the total 15 children at the centre. He instructed the CDPO concerned to immediately take strict action against the absent employee. — OC
