Best poster
: The research paper on production of cholesterol-lowering drug Lovastatin presented by research scholar Harleen Kaur of the department of microbiology of Guru Nanak Dev University was adjudged the best in an international symposium on microbial biotechnology held in New Delhi recently. The paper highlighted the parameters for production of this important drug worth a billion dollar in the international market.

Sud bereaved
: Jagdish Ram Sud, father of Punjab minister for medical education and research, forest, labour and parliamentary affairs Tikshan Sud, was cremated here today. Thousands of persons from all walks of life from all over Punjab, including political leaders and bureaucrats, participated in the funeral. Jagdish Ram died at Indore yesterday and his body was brought here through a chartered plane last night. He was 92 and is survived by two sons and two daughters.

Illicit liquor seized
: The Dinanagar police arrested Sheela and Paramjit, residents of Behrampur and Dadwa, and seized 1,500 litres of illicit liquor from their possession here on Saturday. SHO Joga Singh said a case under the Excise Act had been registered.

‘Sex ratio shameful’
: Punjab health and family welfare minister Luxmi Kanta Chawla, while speaking at a function organised at Kamla Nehru College here today, urged the students to fight against social evils, including dowry and female foeticide. She distributed degrees among 358 students. Chawla said it was a matter of shame that the population of girls was reduced to just 756 against 1,000 boys in Fatehgarh Sahib.

Annual day: The eighth annual day celebrations of Mamta Nikentan Convent School were organised here on Friday night. Senior BJP leader Balbir Punj, in charge, Punjab affairs, was the chief guest, while BJP MLA from Amritsar Anil Joshi presided over the function. A cultural programme was the highlight of the show in which more than 800 students participated. The best part of the show was the light-and-sound item “Main Punjab bolda han”.

Jewellery, cash looted
: Two motorcycle-borne men allegedly looted a house at Adarsh nagar colony here on Friday and decamped with jewellery worth lakhs of rupees and cash. The incident occurred just a few metres away from the police station. They allegedly robbed the house for about an hour. On getting information, DSP Ram Avtar Hira Singh reached the spot and started investigation. The police has registered a case in this regard. — OC

CM pays tributes to martyr Amit:
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday paid tributes to martyr Lieut Amit Beniwal, who was killed during an avalanche in the Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir, at his native village Safipur here. Paying tributes to Amit, Hooda announced to construct a sports stadium in the village after his name. Besides, the Shahid Samman Samiti would also put up his statue at the village school. He also announced to spend an amount of Rs 50 lakh for the construction of streets across the village.

Girl killed in road mishap
: Kavita, a teenaged girl of Gujjar Majri village, near Dharuhera, was reportedly crushed to death, while her mother, Bhoti Devi, sustained injuries when a trailer hit them near the bus stand at Dharuhera on Friday. The mishap occurred when they were crossing the road to catch a bus for Delhi. The police has arrested the trailer driver Manohar Khan of Bihar. A case under Sections 279, 304-A of the IPC has been registered.

A youth was murdered over a property dispute in Therri village in this district last night. Victim Gurbaksh Singh's father Fauja Singh alleged in his complaint that he had a dispute with Bhagwan Singh of Sangatpur Dhani.

BILASPUR
Charas seized
: A police party led by SHO Taranjeet Singh has arrested Dawa Lama, son of Tenda Lama of Byasar village, Kullu district, for possessing 750 gm of charas. ASP Pritam Patial said here on Saturday that the police party had put up a naka on Friday night at the ACC Chowk at Barmana. When it stopped and searched a video coach of the HP Transport Corporation (HP 66-1370) it found a boy holding a white cloth bag. On search this contraband was found in the bag. He said a case has been registered under the NDPS Act.

Two resign: District revenue officer of Bilaspur K.R. Saizal and Ghumarwin tehsildar Dhanvir Thakur have submitted their resignations from their posts of the HP Revenue Officers Association with immediate effect. Both officers said in their separate resignation letters addressed to association president K.K. Sharma (Kasauli tehsildar) that the tenure of this present state body was over in January 2005 and new elections have been long overdue. However, the present state leadership had neither called for any meeting of the state executive committee nor it had summoned the general house of the association for holding new elections.

Foreigner held with charas
: A British national Edward Joseph (38) was nabbed with 6 kg of charas in a Delhi bound volvo bus (DL-01 PB 9683) running under the Himachal Tourism Development Corporation at Manali on Friday. The police in the district had announced a high alert in response to the Mumbai terror attack and kept vigil on every incoming and outbound tourist in Kullu and Manali. The foreign national was caught with the contraband during the search. He had been remanded to the police custody till Tuesday by a Manali court on Saturday.

Building gutted
: A sarai building having five rooms situated in Bhotari (Bhujjal) village under Tali Bhujjal pancahyat of Rajgarh subdivision was completely destroyed on Saturday as a fire suddenly broke out in the building. Initially, the loss had been estimated nearly Rs 20 lakh. The village is far away from the roadside due to which no assistance could reach to extinguish the fire.

Resentment expressed
: The Kangra district unit of the HP government teachers’ union had expressed resentment over the non-payment of TA bills to teachers who had performed election duties to conduct general Assembly as well as byelections of the Hamirpur parliamentary constituency. President of the union Onkar Rana said on Friday that the unprecedented delay in releasing TA bill payment would force the teachers to boycott election duty during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
