Close shave for labourers as building collapses

Labourers working at a construction site along the Panchkula-Zirakpur highway had a miraculous escape when a two-storeyed building collapsed due to alleged mindless digging by a private builder here this evening.

Fake papers used to take away vehicles
Chandigarh, November 13
The police has booked five employees and a security guard of an auto-dealer on the chargers of taking away two Scorpio vehicles by producing fake bills and documents. In another incident, a Sector 31-based Housing Finance Company has reported that one of its employee had embezzled Rs 15 lakh.

Congress set to fire another salvo

The local unit of the Congress is planning another offensive against the UT administrator, Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd). The Congress is set to “use” the visit of union home minister Shivraj Patil to the city on November 16 to open another front against the city administration for its alleged anti-Congress policies.

A 30-year-old safai karamchari of Colony No 5 was allegedly killed by her paramour at Mauli Baidwan village here this evening. The victim, Sangeeta, allegedly had illicit relations with Ashok Kumar, also a safai karamchari.

23-yr-old woman hangs herself
Chandigarh, November 13

Seema, a 23-year-old woman, allegedly hanged herself to death at her house in Attawa here this afternoon. Ruling out the possibility of foul play, the police said she held no one responsible for her death.

GMSH-16 to have drug de-addiction centre

Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, is set to have a drug de-addiction centre. According to Ram Niwas, home-cum-health secretary, the centre will be housed in the office of the State AIDS Control Society, Chandigarh, which is slated to be shifted into Sector 15 next month.

PU library to go hi-tech

Very soon, the AC Joshi library at the Panjab University is going to be in the league of India’s top libraries. The library will remain open not only for the students round-the-clock but will also go “hi-tech”. An auto issue system, which will enable students to return the books anytime in an automatic machine, is in the pipeline.

In yet another theft incident, which occurred in the broad daylight, thieves decamped with gold ornaments and cash. Tripta Devi wife of Yashpal Sharma a retired railway driver, resident of Tagra kali Ram, has lodged a complaint in the Kalka Police station.

Ex-serviceman held for duping youths
Chandigarh, November 13
The police booked an ex-serviceman on the charges of duping several youths to the tune of several lakh of rupees by promising them jobs in the Army. According to sources in the economic offences wing (EOW) of the city police, Vinod Singh Cauhan of Uttrakashi lodged a complaint against Rajinder Singh Thakur of Hamirpur alleging that Thakur had duped him of Rs 70,000.

Two arrested for filling less fuel
Chandigarh, November 13
The police today arrested two employees of a Sector 52 petrol station for allegedly filling less fuel than the amount charged. The station house officer of the Sector 36 police station here said Sunil Doda, an advocate, had lodged a complaint, alleging that Sonu, an employee, and Raj Kumar, manager, at the HP petrol station in Sector 52 had cheated him by filling less fuel for the money charged.

Cases registered against dowry
Chandigarh, November 13
The local police registered a case on the complaint filed by Priya Suri, a resident of Manimajra, alleging that her husband Anil Suri and in-laws, all resident of Jagraon, harassed and maltreated her to bring more dowry. A case has been registered under Sections 406 and 498-A of the IPC at the Manimajra police station.

Employers allege embezzlement, thrash youth
Panchkula, November 13
A Sector 15 resident has lodged a complaint that his son has lost his mental balance when his employers tortured him alleging that he has embezzled the money. While the victim has been admitted in the local General Hospital since November 9, police said they were waiting for a medical report before taking any action in the matter.

3 booked for running illegal course
Mohali, November 13
The local police today registered a case of forgery and Copy Right Act against Arvinder Kumar, a resident of 3-B2, Munish Oberoi, a resident of Phase 11 and Chetan Saini on the complaint of Sanjeev Bhatti and Anil Desh, both employees of EIPR India Limited, Mumbai.

Theft on gurdwara premises
Chandigarh, November 13
Unscrupulous elements broke the windowpane of a car and took away a purse containing Rs 25000 cash, ATM cards and other valuable documents. Navneet, owner of the car, in her complaint, told the police that the car was parked on the premises of Sector 44 gurdwara.
