Love pangs land boy in trouble
Jalandhar, November 11 Vishal Bajaj, a student of B.Com-II, had reportedly made a movie of the girl on the college premises with his handycam and on being opposed by the girl started slapping her. Though the girl’s friend and some other students tried to intervene in the matter, the boy and his accomplice Manu fled from the scene before the college principal reached there. The parents of the girl today met the college principal, Dr Naresh Kumar Dhiman, and SSP Pawan Rai in this regard. While the college authorities suspended him and barred him from attending classes and entering the campus, the police registered a case against him. Dr Dhiman assured every possible help to the girl’s family. The SSP said as per the incident reported by the girl’s family, a case under section 354 of the CrPc was registered against the boy. “We are still investigating the matter and necessary action would be taken very soon,” he said. Sunita Kohli, the mother of the girl, said Vishal had been harassing her daughter for the last one year but last evening he virtually crossed his limits. “He reached outside our house around 7 pm and started thrashing the gate. We were badly scared as he was furious and kept shouting like a hooligan. He yelled at us as to why we lodged a compliant with the police. Not only this he held me from my neck and threatened me with dire consequences. The situation came under control only when the police reached outside our house.”“He even sent SMSs to my daughter till late night saying that he would throw acid on her face in case she rejected his marriage proposal. The boy has been creating trouble for my daughter everywhere. Of late, it almost became difficult for my daughter to go anywhere as he use to indulge in hooting,” she added. A son of city-based advocate Rajinder Kumar, Vishal kept threatening everybody about his father’s influence till late last night. Vishal was forcibly taken to his house by his father later on. Meanwhile, the police has arrested Manu and booked him under sections 294, 354 and 341 of the IPC. He was later bailed out. District president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Bharat Malhotra said in case the college authorities failed to take a strict disciplinary action against the boy, the ABVP would stage a dharna on the college campus. |

Multi-discipline education draws mixed response
Jalandhar, November 11 The scheme, for which the council has invited applications, is said to have been aiming at optimum utilisation of resources, cost reduction using common facilities and development of inter-disciplinary interaction for creating a better learning environment. The scheme will allow institutions to run engineering, management, pharmacy, hotel management, polytechnic, architecture and other streams in a single integrated campus. The colleges have been allowed the use of a common canteen, common sports facility and auditorium besides some relaxation of land norms and computer-student ratio. Some feel that it would be a good scheme going by the fact that they would be able to use the same set up in two shifts - morning and evening - thus enabling them to reap maximum benefits. There are others who feel that there was no dearth of institutions offering such professional courses in Punjab that there should be a need to run evening classes as well. Charanjit Singh Channi of CT Institutions opined, “Technology is changing so fast that we need to replace the laboratory equipment within three years. Under the new scheme, we perhaps will be able to make full use of the same apparatus.” Dr KNS Kang, director of Punjab College of Technical Education, Ludhiana, also believes that the scheme is beneficial. “I think it should have started long back. But it is good that they have at least introduced it now,” he said. Director-cum-principal of DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology C.L. Kocher said the scheme is good only for those running a shopping centre instead of an education institute. “There is no scarcity of engineers as such nor has the demand risen all of a sudden. I really wonder why this scheme has been started. It is not even practically possible to run colleges in two shifts,” he argued. Explaining his logic, he said, “We need to hold classes for 36 hours a week. If we run the college for five days a week, we need to take classes for seven hours a day. This means that we need to run the institute for 14 hours in a day. How is that feasible? I fail to understand.” Discussing a negative aspect of the scheme, a PTU official pointed out, “Unique problems are bound to crop up with the introduction of this scheme. The colleges will use the same faculty for both the shifts, which may lead to their exploitation. It will be extremely difficult to check so many colleges. We already are running 316 colleges, if we split the 204 campuses discipline-wise.” |

Jalandhar, November 11 “In the four assembly segments in the Delhi elections where the SAD has fielded its candidates, we have asked voters of the Muslim community to vote and support the SAD candidates to ensure their win,” the Shahi Imam told reporters here today. Asked about the reason of supporting the SAD, the Imam claimed it had been witnessed in Punjab that only during SAD rule the minority communities were “feeling safe in the border state and Punjab is perhaps the only state where no anti-Muslim riot has taken place so far.” Pointing out that by supporting the SAD, he was indirectly supporting the BJP, which would ultimately form the government if voted back to power with the support of the SAD, the Imam termed the Congress as “number one enemy” and said, “We are not concerned which party will form the government but we are determined to support the SAD candidates only.” The Imam said, “If the BJP refrains from its outburst against the Muslims and ensures betterment of the minority community, we can think of even supporting the BJP.” On the issue of the arrest of Sadhvi Pragya Thakur for her alleged involvement in the Malegaon blasts, the Shahi Imam said, “No community should be branded as terrorist just because of involvement of any individual in an terror act. “If the Sadhvi is innocent, she should not be harassed and if found guilty, she should not be spared,” he said. Well-known Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans, the SAD candidate for the Jalandhar (Reserve) Lok Sabha constituency, also accompanied the cleric who assured him an overwhelming support. Asked whether he would request the Shahi Imam to support the BJP candidates also in the coming Lok Sabha elections, Hans avoided a direct reply and said, “Please do not involve me in controversial politics as I am new to
politics.” — PTI |

Jalandhar, November 11 The museum has already got 300 items, most of these are weapons and three canons of the 18th century on lease by the British government, museum committee chairman Rajinder Singh Purewal said, adding that the proposed museum would be affiliated to the British National Museum and more such articles were expected to be given by the later on lease. Purewal, accompanied by Sikh Sewak Society leaders Parminderpal Singh Khalsa and Pal Singh France, said these weapons/items pertained to the Sikh army of Punjab which had lost to the British forces in the late 1849 and then British took these to the UK. Purewal said that while the museum would be launched on November 23, its grand opening would be made in February next year and they were arranging that somebody from the Royal family of England would attend the occasion. These articles were lying at various places and people were not even aware of all the places and the display, he said and added, “Now these would be available under one roof and the museum would become a major place to showcase the Sikh heritage outside India.” The weapons, which had already been procured by the museum and were being displayed, included guns, swords and other sharpedged weapons, apart from canons. He said they would keep collecting other articles pertaining to Sikhs and rare manuscripts, documents, books which were of immense historical importance would also be brought to the museum. Meanwhile, Purewal and other leaders held that the SGPC and other Sikh organisations had not done much to preserve the heritage in India. “Sincere and consistent efforts were clearly lacking in getting back the material, including rare manuscripts, taken away by the Army during Operation Bluestar,” they added. — PTI |
