Sachin slams 40th Test ton
Nagpur, November 6 The 35-year-old Tendulkar stole the limelight with a flurry of strokes and capitalised on two dropped catches to pull the team out of the pits and steer the visitors to a comfortable 311 for five at close on the opening day. Electing to bat, the Indians were cruising along comfortably at 98 for no loss but lost three quick wickets in the span of 18 runs to slip to 116 for three just before the lunch break with rookie spinner Jason Krejza scalping the prized wickets of Virender Sehwag (66) and Rahul Dravid (0). But Tendulkar performed the salvage job along with the stylish VVS Laxman (64) as the experienced duo put on a vital 146-run fourth wicket partnership to bring the hosts back into the game on a flat track at the newly built VCA stadium. Sourav Ganguly was batting on 27 and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was on 4 at stumps on the opening day which saw both teams more or less sharing the honours. It was a huge relief for Tendulkar who had gone without a century for the last 15 Tests and faced some anxious moments before completing the milestone. The champion batsman had his share of luck as he was first dropped by Mitchell Johnson when on 85 and then by Brett Lee on 96 and faced some nervous moments before completing the century, his 10th against the Australians. His last century had also come against the Aussies - 153 in the fourth and final Test in Adelaide in January this year. But Tendulkar could not last long after completing the century as he was trapped leg before by Mitchell Johnson with the second new ball at the fag end of the day. The Indians, leading the four-match series 1-0 and needing only a draw to wrest the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scored at a brisk pace right through the day and would now look to consolidate their position when play resumes tomorrow. Virender Sehwag, who struck nine fours and a six in making a quick-fire 66 off 69 balls, and debutant Murali Vijay (33), included in the team in place of banned Gambhir, put on 98 runs for the first wicket on a bone-dry wicket before the visitors struck three telling blows to bounce back in style. Debutant off-spinner Jason Krejza struck twice by removing out-of-form Rahul Dravid for a duck, and then cut short dangerous-looking Sehwag's innings by turning the ball sharply after Shane Watson drew first blood by getting Vijay caught behind fending at a short, rising ball. Struggling Dravid was caught off his glove at short leg off a sharply spinning Krejza delivery. The hosts, looking to adjourn for lunch without losing a wicket, suddenly plunged to 99 for two in the space of six balls and were in deeper trouble when Krejza made a ball turn sharply into Sehwag who leaned back to cut it but only managed to chop it on to the stumps. India lost three wickets for 18 runs in less than five overs to hand Australia the upper hand at lunch. Sehwag played in his usual fashion with slashes, chops and flicks off the pads to get runs while debutant Vijay, pitch-forked into international cricket after having played only 21 first class games, looked composed and compact in his defense. Sehwag struck Johnson for two boundaries in his first over while Vijay, who showed hardly any nerves, cover-drove Lee beautifully for a four to set the tone. Aussie captain Ricky Ponting brought in Krejza and Sehwag greeted the new bowler with a lofted four and a huge six over long on off successive balls. Sehwag completed his second half century of the series with a single to square leg off Krejza in 45 balls. Tendulkar and S Laxman ensured that India came back strongly into the game in the post-lunch session as the two experienced batsmen fetched the runs easily. Commencing after lunch, Tendulkar and Laxman, who is playing his 100th Test, were kept quiet for a while by pacer Mitchell Johnson and debutant off spinner Jason Krejza. After settling down, Tendulkar - 16 at lunch — began opening out by slog-sweeping Krejza and then lofting the slow bowler for two successive fours to bring up the 150. Laxman struggled with his timing initially despite having come into this match with unbeaten scores of 200 and 59 in the third Test at Delhi. Scoreboard

Krejza delighted to dislodge top order
Nagpur, November 6 ''It was good to get it out of the way, good to get the cap in the morning. It was a nervous wait but a happy start. I tried to keep my nerves as low as possible, it's something I've been preparing now for six weeks,'' Krejza, who scalped three top-order wickets of India, said here today. ''It was an enjoyable day, and got a couple of wickets which was fantastic. I saw a lot of footage of what I did there and of the Indian spinners, and that helped. I trust myself in what I bowl and that's what I did,'' said the off-spinner who was included in place of Stuart Clark for the last Test. Krejza could have easily added another wicket to his tally as centurion Sachin Tendulkar was dropped twice off his bowling. But the off-spinner was still pleased with his day's work and said he was prepared for the battering that he received from Virender Sehwag initially. ''I was expecting them to come after me early and it was nice to get that out of the way. I kept my head on my shoulders and had a bit of a chat with Ricky and Matty Hayden and got my nerves down and bowled quite well. ''Quite a difficult wicket for the seam bowlers, it was a bit like rolled mud. There were some footmarks there for me and hopefully, White will get a couple later on as well. The important thing is trying to be patient and hit my areas,'' he added. Already trailing 0-1 in the series, Australian team had invited legendary spinner Bhishan Singh Bedi before the third Test at Delhi to give a few tips to their spinners. ''That was good to have someone of his stature, he is a legend obviously, and for him to be backing you as a spinner it was the confidence boost I needed. ''There were a few technical things we spoke about and how to bowl off-spin. It was more about relaxing. You can get little bit on edge, with expecting the wicket to turn, so it's about relaxing to keep hitting your areas,'' he stated. The Tasmanian, who ended the first day with figures of three for 138, said he exploited the footmarks created by the bowlers and managed to turn the ball big on the Indian batsmen. Krejza claimed opener Sehwag (66), Rahul Dravid (0) and VVS Laxman (64) as the home team ended the first day on 311 for five.

India-Australia Test series
The magnificent new Vidarbha Cricket Association ground at Nagpur, deserved a magnificent player to get the first Test century there, and it got it when Sachin Tendulkar recorded his 40th Test ton on the first day of the fourth and final Test match.
The crowd was disappointing and surprising, for Nagpurites love their cricket and have invariably turned up in large numbers for a good contest, and you can't get better than an India - Australia slugfest. Slugfest it certainly looked like when Virender Sehwag took off in his own inimitable style. He had a new partner and so he must have opted to take strike, for even with someone like Gambhir, who has started his career well after Sehwag did, 'Viru' has preferred to be at the non-strikers end when the first ball of the innings has been bowled. He would have been a bit more relaxed seeing the ease with which debutant M Vijay settled into the slot made vacant by Gambhir's ban. They put on 98 before a brute of a delivery from Watson saw Vijay nicking the ball to the keeper. However during his stay at the wicket Vijay had given enough glimpses of his potential and looks a good prospect for India. Poor Rahul Dravid! Nothing is going right for him and he became Krejza's first wicket in Test cricket when he played low, and jabbed a catch to forward short leg. His is a crisis of confidence and a little bit of tweaking of technique is needed for him to become the run machine he has been over the last decade and more. Sehwag had already decided that he didn't rate the newcomer Krejza as a bowler, and was happy to take him apart but Ponting showed more faith in him than he had in Shaun Tait at Perth earlier in the year, and that allowed the bowler to settle down. In cricket however little you may think of a bowler all a batsman needs to do is make one mistake and he will be back in the pavilion. Sehwag's casual attempt to run the ball down to third man had him playing on as the ball turned and bounced more than he expected and he missed out on another Test century and more. At that stage India had to be careful else the advantage of batting first on a pitch that was affording turn to the spinners would have been lost, but two experienced and in form players were at the crease and they took India to safety. Tendulkar has got past the half century mark in this series without getting to the three figure innings, and if ever India needed a ton from the little champion it was now. He delivered and along with Laxman who has been in sublime touch in Delhi, loosened Australia's grip on the game. Their partnership was a contrast in style and approach while the attitude was the same, and that was to stop Australia from getting an upper hand in the game. Tendulkar was more compact and correct, and brutal at times but Laxman as ever was silken smooth and almost polite as he carved the Australian bowlers. He was looking good for another century before he was gone to Krejza who was impressive for his big heart as he kept tossing the ball up to the batsmen. In that respect he looked like an old fashioned spinner unafraid of being hit and willing to give a few boundaries in order to snare his victim. Tendulkar had a few anxious moments but he was not to be denied this time. His dismissal towards the end was a blow, for it meant that Australia still have a chance to get India out within the 400 mark. Ganguly after a tentative start has settled down nicely and if he and Dhoni can have a partnership, then India will take a grip on the game that will decide where the Border-Gavaskar trophy goes.

Delhi grab 3 points against Punjab
New Delhi, November 6 In its first innings, Delhi was all out on 519 after the visitors were bowled out for 391 in their first essay. As the match looked destined to be heading for a draw, Yuvraj scored a flamboyant 38 studded with six fours and two sixes in just 44 balls before his innings was cut short by left-arm spinner Chetanya Nanda. In their second essay, Punjab was 149 for the loss of three wickets before the two captains - Akash Chopra and Pankaj Dharmani - decided to settle for a draw. By virtue of their first innings lead of 128 runs, defending champions Delhi was awarded three points, while Punjab had to remain centent with just one point. Resuming at overnight score of 434 for eight, Chetanya Nanda (56) frustrated Punjab bowlers as he completed a well-made half century of 126 balls and was finally dismissed by Gagandeep Singh. His overnight partner Ashish Nehra contributed eight runs, while Amit Bhandari remained unbeaten on 11. For Punjab, Gagandeep bagged three wickets, while Siddharth Kaul and Sarbjeet Ladda grabbed a couple each. However, Punjab was just 21 runs ahead with first innings centurion Sunny Sohal (23) and Pankaj Dharmani (22) were at the crease when the match was called off after the two captains decided to settle for a draw. Karan Goel (22), Raviinder Singh (27) and Yuvraj were three wickets that the visitors lost, while Nanda picked up two
wickets for Delhi. I had also been elbowed by Gambhir: Afridi
Lahore, November 6 Recalling that he was also been elbowed by Gambhir during a One-day International match against Pakistan at Kanpur in November last year, Afridi said the left-hander made a mistake by repeating the same thing against Watson. ''He did a similar thing with me while taking a run while I was bowling and we had exchanged a few words with each other. After running into me he turned around and made some comments and I also replied back. But the match referee let us off with fines and afterwards we sorted things out and everything cooled down,'' the 28-year-old added.

Symonds set for Test return
Melbourne, November 6 Symonds was dropped from the Australian team touring India after he missed a compulsory team meeting and instead went for fishing during the home series against Bangladesh. The burly all-rounder was advised to undergo rehabilitation programme which was looked after by sports psychologist Phil Jauncey and
other specialists. However, Symonds ouster from the team did not go well with the team as Australia was found struggling in their ongoing the tour of India. Cricket Australia is well aware of Symond's expertise and is therefore, desperate for the all-rounder to make a return.

Heroes brush aside Mumbai Champs
Chandigarh, November 6 Batting first, Heroes amassed 214 runs, the highest score in the tournament. Chasing this imposing total, Champs could muster only 135 runs losing six wickets to crash to a big defeat. With the stupendous win, the defending champions Heroes have inched closer to the title. Heroes were off to a racy start. But the fall of wickets at regular intervals made one believe that their batting would fizzle out without putting a decent total on the board. Dangerous Abdul Razzak was back in the pavilion off the very first ball. Jimmy Mehar and Ambatti Rayudu tried to stabilize the innings, but both departed at the same score of 45. The fall of Anirudh Singh soon thereafter did not help the team cause either. The arrival of Binny and Boje at the wicket changed the complexion of the game. Boje got into the act in the crucial middle overs taking 18 runs off a Robin Morris over. Binny too joined the party, clobbering 17 runs off Van der Wath's 15th over. Binny completed his second ICL half century off only 24 balls in which he struck 5 fours and 3 sixes. Avinash Yadav finally brought to an end the 92-run partnership for the fifth wicket with the scalp of Binny. Boje then unleashed a calculated assault on bowlers hitting the fence and hoisting over it with ease. By the time the stipulated quota of overs was over, the scoreboard showed healthy (214/6). Boje's knock of 88 runs came off 49 balls and was studded with 8 fours and 5 sixes. Replying to this mammoth total, Mumbai Champs were never really in the reckoning. Opener Dhiraj Jadhav put up some resistance scoring 43, the highest score from the side. But the rest of the batting just caved in without much fight as the Champs’ could reach 135 for 6 in the 20 overs. Boje was named Man of the Match. Brief Scores: Hyderabad Heroes 214 for 6 in 20 overs (Boje 88, Binny 51, Kasprowicz 2/35) Mumbai Champs: 135 for 6 in 20 overs (D Jadhav 43, JJ Van der Wath 26 not out, PIS Reddy 3 for 25) |
