BJP against violence: Rudy
Dehradun, October 26 Asked about the alleged involvement of some Hindu bodies associated with the BJP in Malegoan and Kanpur blasts,he said his party was against any kind of violence. On the involvement of a sadhvi associated with the BJP in Malegoan blasts, he said an investigation should be carried out and the guilty punished. He, however, said the majority community in the country had been discriminated against and of late there was a tendency to retaliate. The issue of terrorism and its handling by the UPA government would be a major issue in the coming assembly elections in four states and the next Lok Sabha polls. ” Terrorism, appeasement of minorities particularly Muslims, infiltration, plight of farmers, inflation and financial chaos would be the issues the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would focus on. “The NDA wants to face the terror while the UPA only wants to debate terror,” he added. Rudy said his party would be raising the issue of “open support” to SIMI and terror suspects in Batla House encounter by UPA ministers. “ We would like to ask whether any rapist from Jamia University would also be given legal assistance as given to Batla House suspects.” The BJP spokesperson said the NDA was ready for the polls but the UPA was not prepared for it. “They are not even clear on the timing of the Lok Sabha elections.” Painting a grim picture of the economy of the country, he warned the situation would further deteriorate with the closing down of corporates in the next fortnight. “ The finance minister is clueless and economy is on the verge of a disaster with inflation touching 13 per cent,” he charged. He said the measures taken by the union government in the shape of lowering of CRR rates would not help. “ The collapse of the economy is imminent.” On the crisis faced by the Uttarakhand BJP, he said any talk of change of leadership in Uttarakhand was baseless. “ BJP leaders, including Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, are meeting central leaders in preparations for assembly and Lok Sabha elections.” |

Paper weights fly at MC meeting
Haridwar, October 26 The third board meeting of the municipal corporation witnessed chaos and pandemonium with members fighting, some even throwing chairs and paper weights at each other. Disrespecting the trust endowed by people on them. Muncipal president Kamal Johra has been facing opposition since he was elected. The ward members of Congress, Samajwadi Party and BSP have been criticising the president of the corporation. Leader of opposition in corporation, Sanjay Sharma, criticised the municipal president and told the Tribune that “Mayor cites lack of funds for paying salary to contracted workers but on the flip side, he puts a proposal of buying new cars”. It is to be noted that in the corporation’s second meeting on 17th July, a unanimous resolution was passed for the re-induction of 356 contracted employees, who were removed earlier by the administration. Lack of workers has hampered sanitation and cleanliness drive in the city. Sharma also blamed the municipal head for the slow rate of development in the city and accused Johra of giving contracts to his near ones and flouting rules by not inviting tenders as the normal process is. Meanwhile, apart from opposition, Kamal Johra doesn’t even have full support of its party members in the municipal corporation. Situation had reached to such a level that BJP dissident members were about to rebel but were made to retreat following the intervention of senior BJP state leader Ajay Bhatt. A BJP member on anonymity told that they wanted to raise certain issues but in the interests of party backed out. Municipal president Kamal Johra could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. With barely just six months after the municipal elections, Haridwar Muncipality seems to be in crisis. |

A beeline at auto showrooms
Dehradun, October 26 Automobiles showrooms in the city, whose counters missed action till yesterday understandably induced by the ongoing economic slump, today opened to a beeline of customers. “We were told by ‘panditji’ to purchase a car today,” said Kusum Arora. Her husband, however, was not much impressed by his wife’s belief. Workers and managers at DD Motors, a Maruti showroom on Rajpur Road, were a happy lot for they had sold 35 cars in four hours since 7 am. “It is an overwhelming response. Our stock has been exhausted. We expect the number to touch the 150 mark against just five deliveries on Saturday,” said a visibly elated PK Upadhayay, manager EDP and Accessories Section. On an average, around 200 cars sell here every month. One could see customers, who had thronged the two-wheelers showroom of Doon Valley Motors, jostling to make payments. The spirit was palpable as everybody wanted to go home with a new two-wheeler even if it meant a late-night delivery. And the showroom management was all the more willing to oblige. “We don’t mind working till morning,” said Amit Oberoi, the showroom manager. As compared to just 14-15 bikes which sold yesterday, he had no time to compile the number of deliveries made today. One wondered at the sheer number of customers turning up today making cash payments especially in the prevailing market hit by twin blow of cash crunch and the squeezing auto-loans market. “Normally, I would have preferred the financing mode but I believe it is auspicious to pay from one’s own earnings on this occasion,” said BK Sharma, a government employee who purchased a bike for It was probably for this reason that cash deliveries roughly added up to about 70 per cent of the total at DD Motors. |

Diwali shopping picks up
Dehradun, October 26 The bleak news of the market underperforming has not proved to be a dampener for most shoppers and shopkeepers are expecting to do brisk business today and the ensuing two days. All jewellery shops on Rajpur road and Dhamawala are decked up in anticipation. Customers eager to buy gold and silver coins have a wide variety of choice. One can buy a 5gm silver coin for Rs 120 at Kamal Jewellers and a 10 gm coin with engraving of Laxmi and Ganesh can be purchased at Rs 230. Plain candles are passé and, in their new avatar, they have been cast in wine bottles, shaped into Gods, and toys. “We have introduced innovative ways to cast candles. We have several varieties of candles besides the regular perfumed and coloured variety,” said Nafis of Sai perfumery. Idols are selling in huge numbers with mid-sized statue of Ganesh set in crystal at Sushil Departmental Store costing Rs 1275 while the one in glass costs Rs 75. At Mahavir Dreams Collection, idols made of onyx have also caught the fancy of buyers. The statues that were only available in temples can now find a place in your homes. “Statues and lamps made of onyx are a rage in Pakistan. Now, we have started manufacturing in India and we get it from Jaipur,” said Sonali of Mahavir Dreams Collection With the prices of dry fruits touching the roof, shopkeepers have devised alternatives by packing them in bowls that range between Rs 145 and Rs 1500. If one finds the price of cashewnuts and pistachio nuts high, one can opt for Indian kishmish and walnuts, that are still cheaper in the open market. “The concept of gifting juices and health tonics is slowly catching up in the town,” explained Ishwar Singh of Ayurveda Shop. As the winter is about to set in, customers have ordered packs of Chavanprash and fresh aloe
vera juice. For the health conscious, there are fruits for all seasons. Fruits from Australia and New Zealand may not be a good option for those wanting to remain with their budget but these fruits do have buyers. Kiwi fruit sells at Rs 25 a piece and American apples at
Rs 250 a kg. |
Discounts beckon consumers
Haridwar, October 26 With Dhanteras being an auspicious day for buying ornaments and utensils, the market was abuzz with consumers. Gift items are the major attraction in the market. With SIDCUL, BHEL and other corporates in Haridwar, these readymade gift items are selling in huge numbers. Harish Sahni, a trader of these items, said that surge in demand of these items has increased in past few years owing to industrial units in Haridwar especially after creation of Uttaranchal in 2000. But with the common man and middle class being affected by the financial crisis, limited shopping was being done with a focus on priority items. “Earlier, we used to buy consumer goods and household items during Diwali in huge numbers but with the rupee going down, we have decided to only buy things for the festival,” avers Meenakshi Bisht, an executive working in SIDCUL. With traders resorting to aggressive marketing to woo consumers, they are getting heavy discounts and schemes which will help them get most out of the season. Meanwhile, as a result of the terrorist attacks in Varanasi and serial blasts in Delhi, the police have tightened security especially around crowded markets. City superintendent of police Asim Srivastava told The Tribune that the police is on alert with special emphasis on security in the crowded markets. |

Subsequently, he has been designated acting president of the association. Confirming this, agriculture minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, who was heading the association till now, said since the past three years they had been trying for affiliation of the association with the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), but in vain on account of factionalism among various cricket associations in the state. On account of non-affiliation with the BCCI, players of the state were not getting exposure at the national level. Rawat said that former Test cricketer Rajinderpal Singh had requested the cricket associations to unite for the benefit of their players. Aryan Group bag T-20 title

They could only manage to score 137 runs falling short of the target by nine runs in the allotted 20 over. It was Gajender’s clever bowling that brought cheers to Aryan Group in the last over. Young-11 needed 19 runs in the last over. The first ball went for a six and the second was a wide, adding four runs from byes too. Now, Young-11 needed 9 runs of the just 5 balls. But Gajender regained his rhythm and stuck with his next delivery to claim a wicket and to bring back Aryan Group in the match. The remaining deliveries were dot balls. In the end, Young-11 needed 9 runs of just one ball, which became impossible for them to score. For Young-11, Vaibhav scored 43 and Dilsher scored 38 runs. But their valiant effort failed to see their team through. Aryan Group became the new champion of YPSS T-20 Cricket Tournament. Urja Nigam pulled off a 1-1 draw against Auditor General Office at the Inter Departmental District Football League in Dehradun on Saturday. Both teams were in fine nick when the game started and made good moves in the initial minutes of the game. But it was AGO team who surprised their opponents by scoring in the sixth minute. It was a fine header by AGO forward Daram Singh. Urja Nigam persistent attempts to pull back an equaliser proved fruitless. The score at half time was 1-0 in favour of AGO. But Urja Nigam came back strongly in the second half. They scored the equaliser in the 45th minute through a superb shot by midfielder Vijyender Naiar from the right. The ball went off the gloves of the keeper to sail into the net. Towards the end, the AGO forward line took long-range shots at the Nigam goal to increase their score. But it was the good work by Urja Nigam keeper Bindar Singh which denied them any success. ONGC will clash with Secretariat on October 30. |
