Student organisations all set for JNUSU poll
New Delhi, October 18 With the slogan “Revitalise the JNUSU”, Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has decided to repeat its last year’s vice-presidential candidate Roshan for the post of president this year. “We are going to raise several national, international and campus-based issues. The crisis in America due to the financial deregulation and its implications on our country is going to be one of our main issues,” said Rohit, state secretary, SFI. Besides, the organisation is going to corner the right wing for allegedly attacking minorities across the country. “Communalism and terrorism are inter-related and we are going to take on the fundamentalist right wing elements in JNU for supporting ideology of hate,” said Rohit. All India Students’ Association (AISA) has nominated the outgoing JNUSU president Sandeep Singh for the presidential race once again. The organisation is going to the students with the achievements of its outgoing JNUSU office-bearers. The right wing Parishad, as it is called in JNU, ABVP is concentrating on issues like the alleged conversion of Hindus in Orissa and other states. The organisation is fielding Vijay, a PhD student from CSRD, for the post of president. “There have many issues that would be included in our manifesto. Primarily, we strongly oppose the Bangladeshi infiltration in our country. We also stand in support of the police officers who conducted the Jamia Nagar encounter,” said Manoj, Delhi state vice-president, ABVP. Parishad promises the students that its candidates, if elected to JNUSU, would meet the President of the country demanding death penalty for Afzal. Another student wing that surprisingly got good chunk of votes in the past two years in JNUSU polls is Youth for Equality. “We haven’t yet decided on our candidates but we would raise our voice against corruption and we believe that reservation is also a result of corruption. Besides, we are against discrimination in the distribution of scholarships. All the students should be awarded the same amount of money for the same course,” said Amit Ranjan, representative, Youth for Equality. Amit claimed that a lot of students from the general category are still struggling for hostel seats. “We want reservation for the needy and not the greedy,” he said. Congress-backed National Students Union of India (NSUI) has decided to stick to the campus-based issues. “All the other student organisations talk about national and international issues while we concentrate on the issues that are close to the students,” said Shabbir Alam, JNU vice-president, NSUI. He said, “Congress has always been pro-students and pro-reservation. On JNU campus we have tried hard to push for the reservation. We also demand a tentative arrangement to be made for the girl students who have not been allotted hostel rooms as yet.” An ultra left wing organisation Democratic Students Union (DSU) has decided to fight for just one post with its candidate Banojyotsana. “Our organisation always supports the people’s movements across the country. We stand in solidarity with the Kashmiri people in their struggle for independence,” said Rituparno from DSU. He said that the organisation opposes all sorts of mainstream left opportunism that is taking place in India. “We do not believe that previous JNUSU representatives have done much for the security of minority students in this university. Police has picked up minority and Kashmiri students time and again and none of the organisations took a stand against that,” said Rituparno. Meanwhile, the final list of candidates would be displayed tomorrow evening. The JNUSU elections would be held on

Nigerian, woman accomplice held for cheating
New Delhi, October 18 Sleuths of the crime branch arrested Chima John Kenneth alias Johnson Smith, 28, and his accomplice Nirupma Tiwari, 32, from Gandhi Vihar in the Timarpur area of North Delhi. Deputy commissioner of police (crime branch) Neeraj Thakur said that a Mumbai resident Shailesh Singh had complained them against the accused. Shailesh had told them that a man called Martin Pedro got in touch with him saying that he had won prize money of $850,000 for the New Year Season 2008 that was organised by Webmaster Inc. Pedro asked Singh to furnish his details through email so that the prize money could be sent to him. Singh was asked not to inform anyone about the money in order to avoid disqualification that could arise from a possible double claim. Singh was then contacted by some Tony Alexander, who posing as an executive from the foreign remittance department in Natwest Bank, told him that a senior diplomat, Johnson Smith, would deliver the money to him in India on October 9. Singh was then asked to pay $950 towards the ‘Indian airport authority charges’.
“Enticed by the prospect of easy money, Singh made the payment in the bank account mentioned in the email. Immediately, after an hour, Smith again demanded Rs 2,00,000 for registration with the customs registration department in Delhi. The complainant also paid the asked amount in a different bank account,” Thakur said. Finally, last week, Smith delivered a bag to Singh at Ashoka Hotel saying that it contained the prize money. But when Singh opened the bag he found only black paper notes. Smith told him that the notes were “defaced” dollars and could be restored by applying certain chemicals that would cost him Rs 1,25,000. Confused Singh felt cheated. He approached the police and narrated them the whole episode, after which the culprits were nabbed. |

Noida residential draw on Nov 4
Noida, October 18 Meanwhile the Allahabad High Court has reportedly taken a grim view of the reasons given by Noida Authority for change of site for 72 plots when the draw committee of Noida Residential Scheme 2004 presented its report to the Allahabad High Court on Friday. The court called for the entire correspondence in this connection including the notices issued by the officers of the planning and residential department of Noida Authority. The members of the committee constituted by the High Court to oversee the draw which is said to be conducted in a fair manner, had told the court that the final list of all the applicants will be ready by October 20. They presented their report to the High Court on Friday as per the earlier decision. Noida Authority advocate Ramindra Pratap Kumar had presented all the documents demanded by the court during the hearing. The locations of 58 plots in Sector-50, 9 in Sector-44 and 5 in Sector-43 have been changed. The court called for all the reasons to be presented before it due to which Noida Authority had sought changed locations for plots. Though 58 plots in Sector-50 have been included in the scheme, these are not available on the site, sources said. Similarly 9 plots, which had been encroached upon have also been relocated to new site. Court stay is affecting the location of 5 plots in Sector-43, it is learnt. Meanwhile, a high-powered meeting of the administrators of Noida and the officers of the district Gautam Budh Nagar was convened to iron out any hiccups that could be encountered during the draw. The two members of the committee, principal secretary, agriculture, Uttar Pradesh, J.B. Patnaik, and Varanasi Development Authority’s vice-chairman, Himanshu Kumar apparently appeared satisfied with the arrangements. As per sources, the draw will be conducted in phases over four days. To be held at the Noida Stadium located in Sector-21 Noida, the draw will feature separate categories on different days. The categories included in the draw are for plot sizes measuring 112.5 sq. m, 162 sq. m., 250-300 sq. m. and 450 sq. m. Of the total 1250 plots, 625 plots are for the reserved category while the rest are for the general category of applicants. During the draw process, to maintain absolute transparency, each applicant will be called to the podium to ensure that his or her application token has been included in the draw. When the application token is being put into the transparent container, the application number will be flashed across hug screens displayed at the venue. Expecting a large crowd during the draw, DIG Meerut range, P.V. Rama Shastri along with the GB Nagar district magistrate, S.K. Sharma and the city magistrate have reportedly drawn special security arrangements. |
Ladi returns with eclectic sculptures
New Delhi, October 18 His eclectic sculptures display the usage of found material like broken tubelights, fused bulbs, old chandeliers, scraps of old trophies, gemstones and metal to exhibit beauty in eccentricity. The show is on till November 12 at Gallery Threshold, Lado Sarai. The show can be simultaneously viewed at www.gallerythreshold.com. Explained Tunty Chauhan, director, Gallery Threshold: “Prithpal Singh Ladi was quite the shooting star when he appeared on the horizon around a decade ago, then wasn’t heard of much, and has recently come back into the reckoning with his new works. Ladi makes sculptures that are restlessly rooted in a pervasive multitude of life’s transforming manifestations. The art world awaits his return with curiosity, anticipation and bated breath.” At 53, Ladi’s works continue to exhibit his penchant for the eccentric and strange and reflect his constant struggle to come to terms with personal loss far beyond the ordinary. Almost every work is a tribute to the suffering of a family member but it is the artist’s masterly imagination at using material that redeems the work from being merely a personal indulgence. Though each sculpture is almost a condensed narrative that begins with an autobiographical tinge, it soon grows into a larger picture. Through intricately detailed dragonflies and hindless frogs, mechanical devices like an antique Mercedes typewriter, limp human figures in postures of obeisance, Ladi infuses his sculptures with a queer humour that enables the viewer to access them, moving effortlessly from the familiar to the fantastic, or from the apparent to the suggested. Take his series Jewel Insects for instance. Large dragonflies made of glass, gemstones and metal are reference to his childhood years spent in Shillong replete with freedom of creativity and innocence which now he feels are “under siege”. Or the sculpture titled Replotted (fibre glass) where a bemused man tries to hold down a fossilized butterfly that has almost escaped his grasp. Says Ladi: “My father was a famed jeweller who was modern in outlook and gave me the freedom to choose art when the rest of the family was either doctors or engineers. When I lost him to cancer, I almost went into hiding fighting my own internal demons. I think I’m now ready to face the art world with work which will tell not only my story but also of so many others who we call the ‘common man’.” In another sculpture, Type Muskan, Ladi has used an antique typewriter from the makers of Mercedes to create what he calls a ‘jungle story’ for his 10-year-old son Muskan. So, one can find desolate animal figures all telling their tale of nature being lost to deforestation and commercialisation. “I am revisiting my childhood years through my son. Just like a child, I learn every day to resurrect dead material that is no longer of any use. Glass of whiskey bottles, broken tubelights, fused bulbs, old chandeliers and scraps of old trophies all find their way into my work one way or the other. Sometimes, I get carried way too,” he smiles. What’s interesting is one can dismantle the sculpture to use the typewriter as an original, a technique the sculptor could master because of his science background in college. Just as he had broken all norms of sculptural attitude during his student days in Baroda (“All our teachers could teach us was to make buffaloes and elephants,” he complains), Ladi still retains the rebellious streak in him. As is evident in his work titled “And Look Who Walks The Ramp” and “Judicious” where he makes a comment both on fashion and judiciary! Ladi was born in 1955 in Shillong. He studied sculpture with distinction at M.S. University, Baroda, 1981. He received a National Lalit Kala Akademi award, 1981, Gujarat LKA awards, 1978, 1988 and the inaugural Bendre Husain Award, 1989, also scholarships including one to the Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris, 1981-82. Prithpal Singh Ladi taught sculpture at the School of Architecture, Ahmedabad and National Institute of Fashion Technology,

Govt deliberately delaying Games projects: BJP
New Delhi, October 18 According to the BJP, two dozen Commonwealth Games related projects, which could be completed before the elections, were being stopped. And this is being done to put the new government in an embarrassing situation. Chief of the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Harsh Vardhan said that construction work of the Khel Gaon, flyovers, stadium and accommodations for foreign visitors were being delayed by the government. “The progress of the construction work is very slow and they cannot be completed till 2010. Consequently, the new government will have to face embarrassment,” said Vardhan. Vardhan said that the Chief Minister had claimed that Delhi would be made a world class city by the time of the Commonwealth Games. But the claim seems to be a far dream as two months ago when several new constructed roads were tested, they were all found to be of bad quality. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader further added that it was claimed by the government that 26 flyovers would be completed within one and half year but so far work has been started only for 16 flyovers. Vardhan claimed that the Chief Minister and the union urban development ministry together, were hatching a conspiracy to delay the projects connected with the
