drugs, robs family
Noida, June 7 The incident occurred on Friday night at industrialist Ajay Maini’s rented residence in Noida’s Sector 50. Maini, 40, his wife Sandhya, 38, son Rakshhak, 15 and their relative’s daughter Sara, 3 along with cook Raju were drugged. Sandhya died while the rest are in

Senior superintendent of police, Noida, R.K Chaturvedi said it appeared to be a case of robbery, but further details would be available only after Ajay Maini regained consciousness. “We have registered a case, sealed the house and questioned five suspects. Besides servant Akash, more people may have been involved,” he said. Satish Madra, who is the landlord and resides on the ground floor of the house, said, “Ajay Maini is an industrialist in the field of steel fabrication. He was residing on the first floor of the house with his four relatives and two servants. Raju, their cook, had been with the family for a number of years.” About three months back, Maini employed a Nepali servant, Akash alias Raj Kumar, who is absconding after the incident. Madra said, “In the morning I was planning to go to the gymnasium, but found Ajay’s car parked behind mine. I rang their bell and called them up but did not get any response. Then I left with my friend in his car. “After returning, I again pressed the bell but still got no response. Then I called the neighbours and when we went upstairs, the house was bolted from outside. We found the entire family either unconscious or semi-conscious. “Maini’s wife’s hands and legs were tied with a rope and the house was ransacked. All almirahs, wardrobes, even the locker of the almirah

No relief from slash in LPG rates
New Delhi, June 7 A deliveryman of a gas agency in Shankar Market said that he had been directed to charge Rs 344.70, as the oil companies had not officially directed to sell cylinders at slashed rate. The government’s directive still lies on papers. A resident of the Jahangirpuri area said that five residents of the area had returned cylinders to the deliverymen saying that the government had reduced the rate. He added that the gas agency owners would be forced to sell cylinders at slashed rates. However, Rakesh Mehta, chief secretary, Delhi government, had said yesterday that the reduced price of LPG cylinders would be effected from today. A senior Delhi government officer said that due to the delay caused in giving final touches to the policy, the order could not be placed before the oil agencies. Today being Saturday, the offices are closed. The order will be placed on Monday. New LPG price notified today The Delhi government today issued a notification in respect of the reduction in the enhanced price of domestic LPG cylinders in the Capital. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on June 5. She had said that the hike in the LPG cylinder price in Delhi be only Rs 10 instead of Rs 50. The notification issued by the department of trade and taxes said Rs 40 would not form part of the sale price of domestic LPG cylinder and it would be sold at Rs 304.70. The city-government would take care of the reduced amount of Rs 40 per cylinder. The government has ensured implementation of its announced decision. Copies of notification have also been sent for compliance to the three oil companies to enable them to pass the benefit of state’s support of Rs 40 per cylinder to domestic customers. The companies market LPG cylinders in Delhi. Meanwhile, women turned up in large numbers to convey their gratitude to the Chief Minister for reducing the enhanced LPG domestic cylinder price. They congratulated the CM on her bold decision. Addressing the women, Mrs Dikshit stated that reduction in price of domestic LPG would benefit a large number of families in Delhi and go a long way in curbing inflation. |

JNU students attacked in train
New Delhi, June 7 On June 4, a group of MA students and faculty from the Centre for Study of Regional Development
(CSRD) were attacked by a mob while returning from a field trip to Sikkim by the Mahananda Express. The incident happened when some locals allegedly tried to occupy the reserved seats of the students, including girls, at Katihar station in Bihar. “There was a minor fight between the locals and students after the locals manhandled a faculty member,” said Sandeep, president, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU). Meanwhile, the locals phoned other residents of their village and the train was stopped midway. The students alleged that hundreds of local residents tried to break into their compartment by smashing the windows and doors of the railway compartment. “We contacted the Railway Ministry in the Capital and our personal contacts in that area,” said Sandeep. The situation was restored to normalcy in a few hours after the intervention of the police. Meanwhile, the JNUSU has expressed deep shock at the inaction of railway police and railway officers present in the train. “It is a shameful incident and we demand strict action against the railway employees present in the train when the students were attacked,” he said. The JNUSU and the university administration have also demanded an inquiry into the incident so that the culprits are identified and punished. |

5 MCD squads to catch stray cattle
New Delhi, June 7 Vijender Gupta, chairman, standing committee, said that out of the five, one team would cover Civil Lines, West Rohini and Narela zones of the MCD. While, the second would cover Najafgarh, Central and South zones. The third team would cover Shahdara (North and South) zone and the fourth team would cover Sadar, Paharganj and Karol Bagh zones. While, the fifth team would remain at the MCD headquarters as a stand-by arrangement and would be deputed in the zones that would require help. Municipal commissioner K.S Mehra directed the MCD to remove stray cattle from the Capital roads by August 31. He said that video footage of stray cattle would be made for submission in the High Court. Mehra said that about 4,000 stray cattle have been rounded-up in the last two months. One thousand six hundred fifty stray cattle were caught in April, whereas 1,864 cattle were caught in May. Further, 389 cattle have been caught this month. Microchips were inserted in 720 cattle, whereas ear tags were inserted in 75 calves. The ear tags will be replaced with microchips after the calves grow up. Mehra also informed that four video cameras are being purchased to maintain the record of impounding operations. Vijender Gupta also disclosed that he had written to the Delhi police commissioner expressing his disappointment over the police’s non-cooperation. The cattle catcher squad of the MCD is at a time provided with seven police personnel under a head constable. He has demanded that a central force with at least one-woman constable should be provided to the squads. Gupta expressed concern over the Rohini incident. He said that the commissioner has been directed to submit a report about the incident at the next meeting of the standing committee. Gupta said that a large number of illegal dairies run in Rohini. He said that the Commissioner would soon be directed to get them closed. Shiv Kumar, a resident of Adarsh Nagar said that a number of illegal dairies were being run in connivance with politicians and MCD officials. Cow menace is felt at an all time high in Azadpur Sabzi Mandi, Majlis Park, Kewal Park, Surja Nagar and Ramesh Nagar. They lie in the middle of the roads and cause traffic jams and accidents. People have repeatedly complained about it but no action has been taken yet. An ex-councillor too has a dairy in the area, Kumar added. The condition in
Jaitpur, Badarpur, Malviya Nagar and Ambedkar Nagar is also not different. Chaudhary Jagdish who owns a dairy in the Trans Yamuna area said that the MCD should develop dairy farms in all districts of the Capital so that dairy owners could shift their cattle there. At present, there are only two dairy colonies - Ghazipur and Najafgarh, which is not sufficient, he said. |

Rs 150-crore land scam unearthed
Greater Noida, June 7 In the latest case, land sharks usurped 126 acre of Gram Sabha in Dara village by tampering with records under Sadar Tehsil. It is learnt that the land worth Rs 150 crore had been transferred in the names of land sharks and their relatives. Deputy district magistrate of Sadar has cancelled the entries when he found them to be fake. He has ordered an FIR to be lodged against those involved in the crime. The usurpers had transferred the 126-acre land in Dara village in their names by tampering with the land records. Padmawati wife of Kailash Chand, a resident of Ghaziabad, Rajeshwari wife of Dharam Prakash of Meerut, Hukam Singh of Haryana, Jayanti Prasad of Meerut, Tej Singh son of Bir Singh of Almohra, Istqbal Mohd of Ghaziabad, Suresh Chander of Ghaizabad and Ramkali wife of Jagdish Prasad of Muzzafarnagar had made fake entries. Interestingly, not a single person among these is a resident of the village. Dy DM RK Singh said that when fraud was committed the area was part of Secunderabad tehsil in Bulandshahr. GDA to sell property at throwaway prices
Ghaziabad, June 7 The authority has now decided to sell its property at throwaway prices — at 60 to 70 per cent reduced prices — it is reliably learnt. A new scheme pertaining to commercial complexes and towers in Vaishali and Kaushambi has been floated by GDA for the purpose. The decision to dispose of the property worth crores at throwaway prices has raised many questions. The commercial cell of GDA maintains that the reserve price is no rate as the bid price goes up many times. In case a particular bid does not bring attractive offer, the bid can be cancelled. The towers built on 500 sq mt and 750 sq mt plots in Kaushambi, 219 one-room tenements built in Kaushmabi and 15-storey Ganga towers and commercial towers have been gathering dust for the past two decades. The GDA had tried to sell these towers many times, but could not succeed. On May 27, 2005, the GDA had tried once again to sell these towers. But all that it could succeed in was selling four forms, and no prospective buyer had come forward to bid. The big questions which call for a thorough probe are why the GDA repeatedly fails to sell its property, why it takes so long in officering its property to the public after registration and why it has to repeatedly revise its property prices which have umpteen times been rejected by court. There must be something basically wrong with working of premier UP government development agency. |

Noida double murder: Rajesh Talwar’s bail plea deferred
Noida, June 7 “The special magistrate who handles CBI cases is visiting jails on Saturday. Hence the case was listed for Tuesday,” said Talwar’s lawyer Satish Tamta. “The original bail application filed in the chief judicial magistrate’s court at Noida has been withdrawn and a fresh application was filed on Friday before the special magistrate for CBI cases at Ghaziabad,” he added. He said that in the bail application, “we have just focussed on the fact that Talwar is innocent since CBI has no evidence against him.” Aarushi, 14, was found dead in her Noida apartment with her throat slit on May 16. The police initially named domestic help Hemraj as the main accused, but backtracked after his body was found on the terrace of the apartment a day later. Senior citizens worried about finances, health
New Delhi, June 7 According to the research done by TNS on the elderly who live alone in Delhi, 34 per cent feel insecure because of financial crunch and 56 percent feel so because of health risks. “Robbery and murder that threaten immediate survival are not seen as risks as such. This could be one of the reasons for the nil percent of elderly feeling insecure because of such incidents,” said Rajeshwar
Devarakonda, head, social protection and emergencies, of HelpAge India. Overall, 59 per cent of the aged living alone in Delhi feel insecure on various
grounds. Devarakonda said they have asked TNS to clarify the data that the elderly were not worried about the murders and loot. “TNS is one of the best in market research. But we have asked them to clarify the data,” Devarakonda told IANS after the release of the report. He, however, said that one of the explanations for the data could be that shortage of money or health problems are seen more as risks among the elderly than other factors. The study found that more than 50 per cent of the elderly feel insecure because of economic and health reasons, which becomes more pronounced among the lower socio- economic strata of society.
