With the commissioning of the new section, Line-1 is now 25.1 km from Rithala to Dilshad Garden and has 21 stations. The total Metro network has increased to over 68.2 km with 62 stations. The opening of the new line has no implications on the Metro fare structure as the minimum fare will continue to be Rs 6 and the maximum Rs 22. The Central and Delhi Governments and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) played a vital role by providing funding and support. The station buildings in the new section—Mansarovar Park, Jhilmil and Dilshad Garden—will have several features. These include Separate Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates for entry and exit at opposite ends of stations, water-harvesting structures, lose circuit television (CCTV) from the very beginning (16 at each station), two customer care centres at each station, parking facilities at all stations and commuter-related property development. Admission Trends
New Delhi, June 3 However, those in South campus seem to be more adventurous, going in for newer, more innovative courses. Dinesh Varshney, the deputy dean sitting at South campus informs, “There is a distinct change in trend of student choices this year, for instance we are getting a lot of queries on courses like statistics honours, business economics, biochemistry and industrial chemistry in addition to the normal choice of an eco hons or a maths hons.” Varshney further informs that students are also enquiring about the prospects of history honours, political science honours and English
honours. “However, yes there is a change in trend this year with students going in for newer courses here in South Campus and so far the largest number of queries have come in for BSc computer sciences and this may well become a very sought-after course,” says
Varshney. The sale of forms was brisk on the second day after DU opened admissions and Tuesday registered a sale of some 950 forms. However, the bulk of students as usual is heading to North campus and they seem to have more traditional choices. The deputy dean, Gurpreet Tuteja informs, “We sold some 18,815 forms today and received 2096 forms and as compared to South campus, students are going in for more conservative preferences in their courses and here at North campus there is not much change in trend, B Com Hons, BA Economics Hons and English Hons are largely preferred and we have receieved many queries on these courses. Also students have been enquiring about Maths Hons and Statistics Hons. The picture will become clearer over the next few days.” Tuteja adds, “Students still prefer traditionally favoured colleges but we are advising them on selecting their college according to the course.
The final allotment will of course be based on merit. Right now students fill out their forms or make their enquiries and then travel from college to college, it is like a joyride for them.” Meanwhile, students are flocking to DU and many are being more careful about filling out their forms. Some want to take a day or two extra completing their forms and making enquiries before filling them out. |
