Friends want torturous death for Dr Talwar
Parmindar Singh
Noida, May 24 While paying tributes to the slain teenager, the residents cursed and condemned the father for committing such heinous crime. Registering their shock and anger, they demanded the harshest punishment for Dr Talwar. It is unspeakable and incredible that an educated and high profile man can perpetrate this gory and inhumane crime on his own comely and innocent daughter while he himself did not have a good character, said a resident. A close friend of Arushi had created an online community called ‘Aarushi RIM’ a day after her death was reported. The community now has over 2,000 members. The posters, mostly youngsters include many friends of Arushi and students of DPS, Noida. They have vented their chagrin and have suggested that her father should be given such punishment where he dies a slow and tortuous death and not the one like capital punishment. Those in their early teens are not able to understand this unusual and rarest of the rare murders. Residents of Sector - 25, Jalvayu Vihar in Noida, where the Talwars live are shocked and scared of the incident that took place in the neighbourhood. According to some social scientists and sociologists, Arushi case typifies the breakdown of familial and emotional bonds, which has been considered as the base of Indian family system for centuries. The stressful life that a normal middle class family leads today has increased chances of danger lurking within the family. While the police’s version has left many loopholes in the investigation. Some senior police officers define it as “a very complex case.” Some retired senior policemen, on the condition of anonymity, expressed doubts if the case would be presented in court. “The evidence is scanty and there is no eye-witness. Besides, the weapon of murder has not been found, which is very important to bring the culprits to justice. It seems that the police is relying on circumstantial evidence in this case. Even the postmortem report too has loopholes. Former Delhi police commissioner Ajay Raj says that the case to be “very weak.” He said that Dr Talwar could walk scot-free soon due to lack of evidence. Dr Rajesh Talwar at the time of his arrest pleaded of being innocent. He said that he was being framed. He sought his brother Dinesh Talwar’s help to save him. His wife Dr Nupur Talwar today came out in support of her husband. According to the police, Dr Talwar has an affair with his colleague Dr Anita Durrani. |

RML nurses asked to vacate hostel Akhila Singh Tribune News Service
New Delhi, May 24 As many as 70 trained unmarried nurses working at the hospital occupy 35 rooms in the hostel on a double sharing basis. The residents have been served with two notices. The order to vacate the premises has dealt a blow to these nurses as they now face accommodation problem, specially considering their odd working hours, their gender and single status. “We have told the administration to spare our rooms. They can use the rest of the building for the expansion of the school,” said a resident. “We are all unmarried nurses living here. It will be very difficult to commute from somewhere else.” Resenting the order, a resident said, “How can they expect us to leave the hostel when it is meant for us? It will be very difficult for outstation sisters to manage the hospital work.” As work timings keep changing, it should be imperative for the hospital administration to provide accommodation to outstation nurses near the hospital. “The hospital authorities should have the funds and infrastructure required for the expansion and not do it at our expense,” said G.K Khurana, general secretary, Delhi Nurses’ Union. “They cannot ask sisters to look for an alternative accommodation,” he added. Meanwhile, the administration has made its position clear. “This hostel is not for trained nurses. Technically, it is meant to be used by students,” said an administrative officer. “Still we are taking the responsibility and making arrangements for their relocation.” However, the nurses’ union believes that relocation is not a good alternative. “We have made it clear that if our nurses work here, they will live around the hospital,” said Khurana. “I have spoken to the administration regarding the issue and have categorically said the residents will not vacate the hostel.” |

Germany’s magic of Fluxus art on display at NGMA
New Delhi, May
24 The magic of Fluxus is at present visible at the National Gallery of Modern Art
(NGMA) which has put together the “Fluxus In Germany From 1962-1994, A Long Story With Many Knots”. Presented in collaboration with the
Goethe-Institut and Max Mueller Bhavan, the exhibition displays more than 300 original works like books, posters, invitation cards, music scores, graphic works, rare films, prints, photographs and installations. The show, which transports you to another world, will be on at the NGMA till June 4. The artistes on show include Joseph
Beuys, John Cage, Ben Patterson, Nam June Paik, Dieter Roth, Wolf
Vostell, Daniel Spoerri and others. The first Fluxus Festival was held In 1962 at the Wiesbaden City Museum in Germany. George
Maciunas, a Lithuanian artiste trained in New York, conceptualised a series of concerts under the title Fluxus International Festival of Most Recent Music. Ever since, the term
‘Fluxus’, has been used for concerts and events, manifestos and editions, that have been held or published mainly in Europe, the United States and Japan. Prof Rajeev
Lochan, director, NGMA, says: “Ideas can be hypothetical but they need to be governed by their own logic, have their own philosophical background and in turn derive their own meaning. The resonating impact of Fluxus can be seen and felt in the experimental works of several contemporary Indian artists utilising inter-disciplinary modes of expression. It is surprising that a movement that provided such diversity of thought and freedom of expression was not accorded the relevance and importance that it has deserved.” Incidentally, eminent Fluxus artist Ben Patterson also performed some Fluxus masterpieces with 12 volunteers from Delhi earlier this week. The pieces include “Piano piece, 1962’’ (George
Brecht), “4’33’’ (John Cage), “Sculpture musicale’’ (Marcel
Duchamp), “One for Violin’’ (Nam June Paik), “Wall Music for Orchestra’’ (Yoko Ono), “In Memorian to Adriano Olivetti’’ (George
Maciunas) and “Paper Piece’’ & “Carmen’’ (Ben Patterson). Patterson is a Fluxus artiste from the early days. Back in 1962 he organised the first Fluxus Festival in Wiesbaden with George Maciunas and many more Fluxus Events until the seventies. His compositions “Paper Piece” and “Variatons for Double bass” still belong to the classic Fluxus pieces. Says Patterson, “The means, materials, and objectives used by Fluxus artistes are constantly changing and impossible to fix. Strictly speaking, Fluxus has never been a movement. It sprang from a loose international collective of artistes, writers and musicians who began working to stage performances in the early 60s. Still, it helped spawn various genres like video art, performance art, and conceptual art.” The movement’s aim was to democratise art and foment cultural revolution, to find some way of putting
avant-grade ideas into broader circulation than the powerful gallery network allowed at the time. Most Fluxus art is playful, cheeky and heavily reliant on conceptual trickery. It messes about with your mental set-up and has a mind-expanding effect. “I don’t think any two of my works are the same. Some are very short. Some are several hours long. I have written works for the double-bass, for paper, for traffic lights, for tea kettles, for coffee beans. My works are also based on the Morse code and classic operas like Carmen and the Butterfly,” says Patterson. |

Mehra announced that the corporation had decided to discontinue the defaulting Citizen Service Bureaus (CSBs) started two years ago for tax collection. Major discrepancies were found in their collections. There was a large gap between the collection and actual realization on the part of the CSBs. It also failed to make online collection and assessment. The Mayor pointed out that during 2006-07, the total collection of property tax was Rs 800.68 crore, whereas the actual amount realized was only Rs 711.48 crore, recording a gap of Rs 89.20 crore. The amount of dishonoured cheques was Rs 7.58 crore. The gap of Rs 81.62 crore remains unexplained. Mehra appealed to people that, as far as possible they should pay tax through the on-line system. Dausa Firing: Dismiss Raje govt, say Gujjar leaders
New Delhi, May 24 The Gujjars were holding a peaceful protest yesterday at Bharatpur in Rajasthan under Gujjar leader Col Bainsla, when police indulged in unprovoked firing, killing nearly 15 persons. Addressing a press conference here today, Bidhuri said that Gujjar leaders from across the country along with their supporters would hold a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on May 26 and demand the dismissal of the BJP government in Rajasthan. Later, they would march to the Prime Minister’s residence with their demand, as the Vasundhra Raje government had become a threat to people’s safety. The Gujjar leaders alleged that the constitutional machinery had completely collapsed in Rajasthan and the BJP government had lost the right to rule. Therefore, it should be dismissed immediately. Charging the Vasundhra Raje government of being inhuman and vindictive, Bidhuri alleged that the BJP had cheated Gujjars, by not fulfilling the promises made last year and also by “unleashing state-sponsored terror” on them. Last year when the Gujjar agitation was withdrawn after an agreement between the government and Gujjar leaders, the Rajasthan government had assured of appealing to the Centre to grant scheduled tribe status to Gujjars. Besides, it had promised employment to one of the kin of the 26 Gujjars killed in the agitation. It had promised that Rs 10 lakh compensation would be given to the kin of those killed in police firing, all cases against Gujjar leaders would be withdrawn and a compensation of Rs 1 lakh would be paid to those injured in police firing. Bidhuri said that it was unfortunate that not even a single promise had been fulfilled, even after one year of the agitation. He said that yesterday’s violence had led to resentment in the community and nothing less than the dismissal of the BJP government would satisfy them. |
DU gears up for admissions
New Delhi, May 24 Students are excited at the prospect of enrolling at DU. However, due to ‘HOTS’, a concept introduced by the CBSE making exams more analytical, grades are lower this year. Only 753 students have scored a perfect 100 in at least one of their papers. Also, the number of students scoring in 90s is lesser this year. This is expected to have an impact on admissions. “I want to try at St. Stephens, LSR and Miranda. I have scored 85% but it is much less than what I expected. I am nervous if it would be enough for these colleges,” says an applicant,
Radhika. Ajay Sahni, another student says, “I have scored 87%. But I am not taking chances and will also try for admissions in the UK and the USA. Many of my friends are doing the same. We are keeping our options open.” Even the University this year has to adjust to some changes including the increase in seats due to the OBC quota. Meanwhile, St Stephen’s will begin admissions from May 26. As every year, the admission process at the college will begin a week before admission process for all other DU-affiliated colleges. Stephens does not accept the common admissions form and students have to fill separate admission form for the college. These forms will be available at the college counter on weekends from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. Forms can also be bought by post through a demand draft of Rs 400 drawn in favour of ‘Principal, St Stephen’s College, Delhi.’ The last date for the submission of completed application forms is June 16, till 1 p.m. According to the college administration, the cut-off list for undergraduate courses will be displayed tentatively by June 18 and the interviews of the selected candidates will commence from June 19. |
