bomb call creates panic at Sai Baba Mandir
New Delhi, May 15 A police team reached the temple complex around 5:30 p.m. and ordered evacuation. Since Sai Baba is worshipped on Thursday, the temple had more devotees as compared to normal days. The police was called by the temple authorities, which had received the bomb threat. The temple was thoroughly checked. “It turned out to be a hoax call. The police team along with the bomb disposal squad reached the temple complex within minutes of getting the information,” said HGS Dhaliwal, DCP, South Delhi. The news created panic among devotees, especially in view of the recent Jaipur blasts. “We were waiting for our turn, but were told that the temple was being shut for sometime. No reason was given. We saw the police and realised that something was wrong,” said Satender Kumar, a devotee. Meanwhile, with the flashing of the news on television channels, devotees who had planned to visit the temple late in the evening cancelled their programme. “I changed my plan of visiting the temple today. It will be the first time in the last three years that I will not visit the temple on Thursday,” said Geetanjali, a devotee. The temple has its own private security and even the ‘prasad’ is checked before the entry. However, the security of the temple police has been beefed up further and more men have been deployed. |

CM opens CCTV control room at Tihar Jail
New Delhi, May 15 Dikshit said that it is difficult to keep an eye on the inmates, as their number is much more than the capacity of the jail. The government had decided to install CCTV cameras at all vulnerable places in the jail to effectively monitor the activities. The cameras have also been installed on the entry door, visiting rooms and high security wards. Apart from monitoring activities, recordings are also done whenever necessary. Dikshit added that her government had decided to construct jails at Mandoli, Narela, Ghitorni and Baprola, which would help in overcoming the problem of space. The government has also been encouraging inmates to involve themselves in productive works. The inmates prepare household items including wafers and biscuits. The government intends to transform its jails into reform centers so that inmates could become responsible citizens after they are released. Tihar Jail has also been providing opportunities of training meditation, sports and other activities to its inmates. |

Commuters
go through hell
New Delhi, May 15 Bahadaur Shah Zafar Marg, Ansari Road, Darya Ganj, Mathura Road, Vikas Marg and roads around the India Gate Complex witnessed heavy traffic pile-ups. Traffic chaos was also reported from the Ring Road. It took as long as an hour to clear the jams. Though the authorities had made arrangements like -- park and ride schemes from various parking areas to prevent traffic congestion, commuters suffered. Authorities claimed that the problem was because of heavy traffic on the roads that connect various office blocks in the Darya Ganj, Delhi Gate and ITO areas. Traffic police officers monitoring the situation said that the problem was because of the timings of the match, which coincided with the evening rush hour. The stringent security arrangements imposed around the stadium in view of the Tuesday’s blasts in Jaipur also contributed to the chaos. The designated parking areas for labeled vehicles were heavily policed and random checks were conducted. Similar security arrangements were imposed at the entry gates. People entering the stadium were thoroughly frisked. Meanwhile, security around the hotel where the two teams are staying has also been strengthened. |

BJP
questions govt on Lal Dora area
New Delhi, May 15 Delhi unit BJP president Harsh Vardhan alleged that the government was misleading villagers by announcing that the Lal Dora area of 41 villages had been extended and efforts were being made to extend the Lal Dora area of other villages. The government had announced that Rs 75 lakh would be given as compensation for per acre of land. But neither the Lal Dora area of any village has been extended nor, the compensation has been increased, he alleged. Residents of 364 villages have been demanding that compensation should be paid to them at market price which is Rs 3 crore per acre. They have demanded that the Lal Dora area of every village should be extended by one kilometre on all sides. The government has not extended the Lal Dora area of any village since 1954 whereas the population has increased threefold. The villagers have extended the inhabited area to accommodate their family members. The Delhi government considers new constructions as illegal and has carried out demolitions. |

BJP women wing protests against water shortage
New Delhi, May 15 Raising slogans like – “Pyasi Delhi ko pani do, warna gaddi chhor do”, “Jab se Congress aae hai, sari Delhi pyasi hai” and “Bijli-pani de na sake jo, woh sarkar badalni hai”, women activists appealed to citizens oust the Congress government from Delhi. Vardhan said that despite ten years of rule, the Chief Minister who also happens to be the DJB chairperson has not been able to manage 900 million-gallon (MGD) of water daily for the residents of the Capital. The government has wasted ten years in framing anti-people policies, taking decisions without due consideration and inflicting atrocities on people. He said that the national Capital faces power and water crisis. Power privatisation has failed completely. The DJB is keeping the city dwellers thirsty. In order to shrug off the responsibility, the Chief Minister has decided to privatise water supply also. If water supply is privatised, the scarcity will increase and the price of water will be sky rocketing, warned Vardhan. Vishakha Shailani said that more than 50% of Delhi faced acute water shortage. When water is supplied sometimes during mid night, people fight among themselves to fill water. Two murders have taken place in Delhi over water. |

held for cheating
New Delhi, May 14 People alleged that Nadira had cheated them of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of sending them abroad and arranging visa. Some even claimed that apart from the money, Nadira also possessed their passport. The victims mostly belong to the Jamia Nagar and Noor Nagar area. People alleged that the local police who was called at the spot tried to hush up the matter. According to them, it was only after they contacted the senior officers that an FIR was filed late in the evening in the Jamia Nagar police station. However, people complained that the charges framed are so minor that Nadira would get a bail within hours. “The police has been favouring the woman all along. Initially they were not lodging the complaint and when they finally did, she has been booked only under Section 420,” alleged a victim. The SHO of Jamia Nagar police station could not be contacted for clarification despite repeated attempts. Meanwhile, people stood guard outside the police station so that Nadira could not be let away. Abdul Baqi, a city businessman said that Nadira Khan had taken Rs 14 lakh from him. She had promised that she would chip in Rs 14 lakh more from her side and the two would start the business of installing glow sign-boards. “I gave Nadira Rs 14 lakh on the condition that she would put in her share for a joint business venture. But, today she was running away without even telling me”, told Abdul. Abdul said that when he approached the police, he was told that it was a civil matter and should be sorted out in the court. He alleged that the police had been favouring the woman. Apart from Abdul, about 16 people have alleged that the Nadira had taken Rs 1 lakh from them on the pretext of sending them abroad. “I had given her one lakh rupee last month and she had assured me that my son would be sent to Spain. 100 mn smoke bidi in India: Report
New Delhi, May 15 The report, for the year 2004-05 and termed as the first analytical, scientific and systematic study on the trend, said that bidi smoking was more harmful than cigarette smoking. “In India, bidi smoking contributes substantially to death from tuberculosis,” said health secretary Naresh Dayal. Dayal released the bidi monograph that lists the prevalence of bidi smoking in the country, its consequences — both economic and healthwise and public health policy strategies. He said that there are more bidi smokers than users of any other kind of tobacco products. “Bidi is the most widely used form of tobacco. There are 240 million tobacco users of which 100 million smoke bidi,” he said. The report was prepared with the support of the World Health Organisation, Centre for Disease control and Prevention in Atlanta and the US department of health and human sciences. It said that bidi smoking causes the same diseases as cigarette smoking does - lung cancer, oral cancer, heart diseases, lung disease and addiction - but is more harmful. “One million of the estimated two million cases of tuberculosis in India are due to smoking. But bidi smokers with tuberculosis are at three times higher risk of death compared to TB patients who are non-smokers,” Dayal said. About 85% of the world’s bidi is produced in India. West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are centres of bidi rolling due to the availability of cheap labour. There are 290,000 bidi-making units in India, the report said. “We are making efforts to see that those who work in these fields find alternative jobs,” Dayal said. Prakash C. Gupta, who edited the monograph and is also the director of Research at Healis, Sekhsaria Institute for Public Health in Mumbai that supported the study, said that bidi smoking is predominantly a male practice and is more prevalent in rural areas. Also, it is more common among Muslims, closely followed by Hindus, the report revealed. Initiation of bidi smoking may begin as early as 8-10 years of age in disadvantaged groups like tribal and street children, while the mid to late teens are a vulnerable age for initiation into bidi smoking. Its smoke has proven carcinogens, toxins and poisonous substances. “It contains high levels of tobacco specific nitrosamines — the two most potent cancer causing agents,” Gupta said. The report said that compared to unfiltered cigarettes, bidi smoke contained higher levels of carbon monoxide, ammonia, hydrogen, cyanide and phenol. It is harmful for not just smokers, but those exposed to second-hand smoke. “Bidi also harms workers rolling bidis through inhalation of tobacco dust, while farmers and farm workers handling tobacco crop also suffer severe health problems,” the report said. — IANS |

Court lifts recruitment bar on four colleges
New Delhi, May 15 A division bench of justices T.S. Thakur and Siddharth Mridul, while vacating the stay, asked the institutes to abide by the Disability Act in future too. The recruitment of teachers in Ramjas College, Daulat Ram College, Lakshmibai College and Shaheed Rajguru College for applied science for women can now be held. Some colleges had said that despite placing advertisements in newspapers they had failed to get adequate response from disabled candidates. The court asked the university registrar to prepare a list of colleges that are ready to provide 3% of vacancies for disabled candidates. The stay on the recruitment of teachers was slapped a year ago following a public interest petition seeking implementation of the law on quota for disabled candidates. The court on April 4, 2007, restrained Delhi University and all its affiliated colleges that failed to provide 3% reservation for disabled candidates, from recruiting faculty members. — IANS |

Solve complex Maths in a minute,
the Vedic way
New Delhi, May 15 The world of Vedic Maths, says Kumar, is mental - doing away with finger counting, carrying over digits, manual calculations and electronic computations. Kumar, a mechanical engineer and an alumnus from Indian Institute of Management (IIM) — Bangalore, heads the institute, Magical Methods in Delhi, which works with several schools in the Gulf and South East Asian countries to promote Vedic Maths. “On an average, I conduct 30 workshops in schools across Asia, Europe and Canada every year. Currently, I have three projects with schools in Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok,” Kumar told IANS. He has 57 centres and more than 100 trained Vedic Maths teachers. Vedic Maths, as contained in the Atharva Veda, the last of the four Vedas, is on a revival path after several thousand years. Schools in various Asian nations, Europe and America are falling back on ancient Indian scriptures to crack complex number games that make up present-day Mathematics. But Kumar says it is more popular abroad than in India. “It is recognised by the National Council of Education Research and Training but is yet to become part of the scholastic curriculum in the country,” he said. This when Mathematics is a weak link for millions of schoolchildren across India. The subject seems either too dry or as being loaded with numbers. “The premise is simple. Break down complex numbers into their components of 10s or 100s and calculate mentally. For example, when 38 is added to 46 in conventional Maths, we carry over one and add it to the top-most digit in the column representing 10 (in the Indian decimal system). The result is 84. “But in Vedic math, we break down the number into its decimal components. First, we add 30 and 40, the sum of which is 70. And then add 8 and 6, which is 14. The zero stays and one adds strength to the cardinal number in the bigger decimal column. Hence, 7 becomes 8. The end result is 84,” Kumar explained, citing an example. The mathematician has designed puzzles and mind games for first-timers in Vedic classrooms. Games like the Tower of Hanoi, Magic Square, Frogs and Toad and Double Game are based on logic. “They improve concentration and reasoning abilities, as they initiate rookies into the subject. It does not burden the mind and benefits children,” says Kumar. Vedic Maths, interpreted in the modern context in 1965 by seer Bharati Krisna Thirthaji Maharaja in his book “Vedic Mathematics”, has 16 “sutras” (formulas) and 13 sub-sutras (smaller theorems) to solve the entire gamut of mathematical problems mentally, in less than one-tenth of the time taken to solve them through conventional methods. In a live demonstration, Kumar added two sets of 24-digit numbers down to its last decimal point in less than five seconds, without a word. “It comes with practice,” he said. The Vedic Maths expert, who used the technique to solve his mathematical problems in his IIM entrance test (CAT), has designed modules for students trying to crack IIT, IIM, bank jobs and IAS examinations. — IANS |

Encroachment on 3,400 sq mt land cleared
Noida, May 15 Over 3,400 sq mt land under Khasra No 391, valued at Rs 200 crore, was under illegal occupation for over past two decades. Anticipating the Noida authority bulldozers to raze the market on Wednesday, traders had vacated their premises the previous night. The demolition has, however, come as a shock to shopkeepers like Ajay Khanna. Khanna had set up a restaurant in the market after Chief Minister Mayawati’s assurance who, while addressing her first public meeting in Kali Charan Market on January 8 this year, had declared that the market would not be demolished. Khanna said that he had invested lakhs on the restaurant. Out of the land vacated 2,400 sq mt will be handed over to the Delhi Metro for building facilities for the metro station. The rest of the land will be utilised for building a much- needed multi-tier parking lot for Sector 18 market. It may be recalled that the Noida authority had moved the high court in 1998 for getting the land vacated and later the case had gone to the Supreme court which gave a verdict in its favour. |
