Sikand Murder
New Delhi, May 23 Challenging his life sentence awarded by a trial court earlier this month, Lt-Col Choudhary (retd) told the court: “There can be no bigger provocation for an army officer than to know that a man was keeping his wife before the grant of divorce.” His petition challenging the sentence is likely to be heard on Monday. Additional Sessions Judge Mamta Sehgal last month held Choudhary (72) guilty under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosives Act. He was also fined Rs 10,000. The court convicted Choudhary for sending a parcel bomb that killed Sikand on October 2, 1982, at his Sunder Nagar home. According to the prosecution, Chaudhary was angry because his estranged wife had decided to move in with Sikand and the two had planned to get married. The Central Bureau of Investigation had also alleged that the bomb used in the murder was made in Pakistan and seized by the Indian Army following its victory in the 1971 war. After Choudhary was arrested and the chargesheet was filed against him, the trial began on May 31, 1984, and the process of recording evidence continued for 15 years.

EC firm on poll duties for women MCD teachers
New Delhi, May 23 Presently, teachers and other government officials have been deployed in Najafgarh, Bijwasan, Kapashera and other areas of South West Delhi for issuing photo identity cards. The job that is being carried out on phase level is to be finished by June 30. Since it is summer vacation at schools, study will not suffer. At least 2,000 voters are listed in each police station area. Each teacher will be paid Rs 2 per card. This amount is additional to the salaries given by the government. Mishra said that refusing to carry out the election duty was unconstitutional. As per the Constitution, the election commission has the power to deploy government officials on election duties. The SEC called the meeting to discuss this issue, as Mayor Arti Mehra had recently said at a MCD meeting that women teachers should be exempted from election duties. She had said that it was very difficult for them to visit each house and make a record of voters. People, generally, misbehaved with women teachers on election duty in remote areas. She had said that Delhi government teachers had not been deployed on election duties, though it is the work of the state government. Making a record for the elections is an additional job and this affects teaching at government schools, she had said. |

B-school teachers unaware of facts: Survey
New Delhi, May 23 The Assocham Study on “Faculty Awareness” surveying 258 faculty members of various institutes imparting Masters in Business Administration (MBA) across the country revealed that as many as 89 per cent of the teachers were unable to tell the GDP growth rate scaled by the Indian economy in the financial year 2006-07. The survey was conducted by the team of Assocham Research Bureau to ascertain the practical subject-knowledge and general awareness of the faculty of the various B-schools across the country. The top 30 B-schools were not included. There has been a proliferation of B-schools in the country in the last few years. The survey further divulged that hardly six per cent of the lecturers surveyed read any business newspaper on regular basis. Moreover, persistent readers of business magazines were negligible. “As the teachers themselves are ill-informed, even the students remain unaware of the real world developments keeping their degrees devoid of the real value as also aggravating the problem of talent crunch,” remarked Venugopal N Dhoot, president, Assocham. A little less than five per cent of the teachers could estimate the saving and investment rate recorded during the same fiscal. The proportion of teachers who knew the amount of exports and imports made during 2007-08 was virtually nil. Almost 92 per cent of the lecturers were not conscious of the fact that the foreign exchange reserves of the country have surpassed the $ 300 billion mark. Most of them could only recall that the forex reserves had crossed the $ 100 billion-mark. As Indian economy is increasingly getting integrated with the rest of the world, the relevance of “International Trade” as a subject has grown manifold, added Dhoot. Nonetheless, the survey found that the faculty of the subject remains uninformed about the recent happenings in the global economy. Not even 10 per cent of the teachers were aware of the existence of financial turmoil in the USA. Out of those who were aware, only one-fifth were able to define it. Furthermore, almost an equal proportion (10 per cent) of them were not conscious of the possible recession in the world’s largest economy that of the United States of America. When asked about the central bank of the US, close to 79 per cent of the teachers went blank about it. While the approximate exchange rate of Rupee vis-à-vis USD was known to almost 67 per cent of the faculty members, just about 13 per cent and 17 per cent of them knew Pound and Euro rates respectively. Most of the case studies or examples discussed in the class are outdated, as the books referred by lecturers are old editions stored in the library. A mere 11 per cent of the teachers did ever discuss the recent merger and acquisition deals in the class. As many as 91 per cent of the lecturers teaching Business Environment did not know how to read budget papers. In fact, only five per cent of the respondents could tell the fiscal and revenue deficits of 2007-08. Week-on-week inflation rate on the other hand were known to a majority of the teachers. Almost 93 per cent of them were able to recall the latest inflation figures though an approximate number (truncating the decimal part). Only a handful of teachers comprising about one-tenth of the lecturers were cognizant of the present key rates (Repo Rate, Reverse Repo Rate and Bank Rate). Since the Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) has remained unchanged at 25 per cent for a relatively longer period of time, the response to SLR was far better. Almost 93 per cent of the lecturers could tell the ratio correctly. |

New Delhi, May 23 Overseas Indian affairs minister Vayalar Ravi told reporters today that he had taken up with the Australian authorities the recent incidents of attacks on Indian students, mostly late at night in train stations in Sydney. Many of the taxi drivers had lodged a sit-down protest in the middle of the city asking for better safety measures. Ravi said he had also taken up with the Australian authorities the case of Indian students working overtime. “The students are allowed to work 20 hours a week. So, some Indian students were arrested for working more than that. I had spoken earlier in connection with that,” said Ravi, who is also the union parliamentary affairs minister.
