The growing number of decomposed carcasses lying on road is a telling comment on the callousness of the civic authorities. The failure of the authorities to remove carcasses of dogs and cats for days leads to these being embedded on the road surface after being run over repeatedly by speeding vehicles.

Nayagaon rape case
All 14 accused acquitted
Ropar, June 7
The court of district and sessions judge U. S. Gera acquitted all 14 accused in the infamous Nayagaon rape case wherein a minor Dalit girl was allegedly raped and she later gave birth to a baby boy in 2003.

2 ICUs at PGI inaugurated
Chandigarh, June 7
An eight-bed respiratory intensive care unit was inaugurated by union minister of state for finance and parliamentary affairs Pawan Kumar Bansal at the PGI today. Prof K.K. Talwar, director, and Prof S.K. Jindal, head, department of pulmonary medicine, PGI, informed that the state-of-the-art facility is one of the best in the public sector in the country.

Bir Devinder Singh, chief spokesman of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, today stated that it is strange paradox that in all matters SAD (B) follows the political guidelines of the BJP, but failed to honour the party’s directive in Punjab, issued by its president Rajnath Singh to reduce the sale tax on petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders in BJP ruled states.

RTI: PSEB fined for delaying info

The State Information Commissioner today imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), Patiala, along with a compensation of Rs 5,000 for delaying the information sought by Bathinda resident Amandeep Goyal under the Right to Information Act.

Sector-21 resident Rajesh Kumar Sharma complained to the SSP against sub-inspector Jaspal Singh for not registering an FIR. He stated that he had gone to the police post in Sector 22 to lodge a complaint regarding the theft of his cousin’s motorcycle, but the SI did not register the complaint.

MBA first semester result out, penalty waived

Two days after the Chandigarh Tribune highlighted the laxity on the part of the administration of the Panjab University Business School, Regional Centre, Ludhiana, in submitting the examination forms and fees of all 49 students enrolled in MBA late due to which the result of the first semester was not declared, the university authorities swung into action and declared the results today.

The Punjab Technical University (PTU) authorities today made a mockery of the CET - 08, creating chaos at the examination centre in Government College here and subjecting hundreds of examinees to harassment. The examination started more than half an hour late than the scheduled time.

Onus on accused to prove right to self-defence: HC

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has virtually laid down guidelines for the trial courts for appreciating evidence in “self-defence” cases. It has held injuries sustained by the accused are not conclusive of the existence of right to self-defence.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed LIC Housing Finance to give Rs 50,000 as compensation to a Panchkula resident, Rajesh Khanna, for allegedly auctioning a disputed property.

Chandigarh, June 7
Delhi resident Satya Parkash reported to the police that a diamond, PAN card and cash was stolen from his pocket after two unknown persons gave him toxic water at the Chandigarh ISBT on March 13.

Sanjeevan Singh Man commits suicide
Mohali, June 7
Sanjeevan Singh, 35-year-old resident of Phase XI, allegedly committed suicide today by shooting himself in the forehead with a country-made pistol. The victim was an unemployed drug addict, said the police.

832 cases of IMFL seized
Panchkula, June 7
For the third consecutive day, huge quantity of liquor being smuggled to other parts of the country from Chandigarh was seized at Raipur Rani near here today. The confiscated contraband consists of 832 bottles of premium brands of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL).

Youths rob petrol station
Lalru, June 7
Two motorcycle-borne youths robbed Rs 50,000 cash from a petrol station on the Ambala- Naraingarh road here this morning. According to the police, two unidentified youths came to the station at about 7 am when there was no other customer. One of the youths was wielding a knife and asked the employee to bring all the cash to them. The employee gathered the cash lying at the station and handed it over to them.
