No shopping mall in Defence Colony: HC

Jalandhar, June 3
Residents of the local Defence Colony today heaved a sigh of relief with the decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court that no construction activities would be
carried out on the plot adjoining Defence Colony on Cantonment Road, Jalandhar.

In its judgement a High Court bench comprising Justice J.S. Kehar and Justice Jora Singh directed Radhey Buildwell Private Limited not to effect construction of the “multi-storey shopping mall” in the residential area. The court also directed the municipal corporation (MC), commissioner C.S. Talwar, municipal town planner (MTP) M.D. Sharma and the local bodies secretary, Punjab, to make sure that no construction work is carried out on the site in question.

The residents of Defence Colony, Atwal Colony, Akal House Colony and other adjoining areas had made repeated representations to local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia and other officials concerned but no action was taken in the matter.

Even earlier also permission in this regard was denied on August 16, 2007, to construct the shopping mall but the builder allegedly with the help of a national-level politician of the supporting party of the ruling coalition government in the state reversed this decision and permission to go ahead with the construction was granted on February 15, 2008.

The residents in their previous complaints had mentioned that Cantonment Road did not figure in the 14 roads in Jalandhar notified as “commercial” by the government a few years back. Above all, the change of land use (CLU) is must for allowing a commercial activity in the area. Permission by the MC to construct the shopping mall in a residential area without the change of land use on the pretext that this plot falls in a “no-scheme area” benefited the builder by over Rs 50 lakh.

‘PM should step down if he can’t control oil prices’
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, June 3
If Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is unable to control the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, he should resign from the post so that people can install a capable person on his post to set things right.

This was stated in a press release by former MP and member of the political affairs committee of the SAD Kamal Chowdhary here this afternoon.

Since the formation of the UPA government, the prices of essential commodities have been increasing day by day due to its wrong policies. Inflation has made it difficult for a common man to pull on his family smoothly.

Manmohan Singh was misleading people through false promises and at last he had admitted that he had failed in controlling the price hike, Chowdhary said.

After the defeat of the Congress in the recent assembly elections in Karnataka, Manmohan Singh had realised that power was going to slip from his hands soon after the ensuing Lok Sabha elections and the UPA constituents would be shattered.

In case the UPA government increased the prices of petrol and diesel, prices of essential commodities would further be increased and the condition of the common man would become all the more vulnerable, bemoaned Kamal Chowdhary.

Balachaur Murder
Traffic disrupted after cops ‘lathi charge’ protesters
Our Correspondent

Nawanshahr, June 3
The on-going agitation in the Sandeep murder case took a new turn today when leaders of the “action committee” constituted by
various political parties were arrested for violating section 144, CrPC. The police allegedly resorted to a lathi charge to thwart the protest.

Following the police action, Youth Congress workers led by District Youth Congress chief Rajwinder Singh Lucky blocked traffic at Kathgarh. The police also arrested Lucky and other protesters. The arrests were followed by various demonstrations and traffic blockade at Bhaddi and Pojewal and were lifted after the arrested protesters were released in the evening.

Talking to The Tribune, CPM leader and “action committee” member Mahan Singh Rouri said the action on the peaceful protesters proved that the Balachaur police was allegedly trying to shield the accused. “Today’s police action has ignited resentment among people,” he added.

He said traffic was also blocked in Ludhiana to protest against the police “injustice” and a meeting of all the political parties and residents would be held at Saini Palace, Balachaur, on Wednesday to chalk out further course of action. He alleged that the police had resorted to such an action at the behest of chief parliamentary secretary Chaudhary Nand Lal.

However, Nand Lal denied the allegations and said he was in Chandigarh. Expressing ignorance about police action, Lal said he had nothing to do with it.

Meanwhile, SP (headquarters) Jagtar Singh Kainth said the police neither arrested anyone nor resorted to a lathi charge. “We only took the protesters away to avoid violation of section 144,” he said, adding that the situation was peaceful and under control.

The agitators had suspended their agitation on Friday after an assurance by the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) that the accused in the murder case would be arrested soon.

However, the committee met deputy commissioner Ajit Singh Pannu, who also holds the additional charge of Nawanshahr, and SSP Shashi Prabha Dwivedi on Monday and told them that they would revive their protest from Tuesday and continue it till the accused were arrested.

Malfeasance: Manager, granthi transferred

Phagwara, June 3
Two employees of the local historic Gurdwara Sukhchain Sahib, including accountant Lakhwant Singh, were today placed under suspension following complaints of malfeasance against them.

The other employee is Satwant Singh. A temporary employee, Surinder Singh of Ranipur village, was sacked. Gurdwara manager Sarwan Singh and a granthi were transferred for inefficiency in duty.

This action was taken by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee president Avtar Singh Makkar. Sources said devotees had found some empty bottles of liquor and leftover of meat littered yesterday at the rear of the rooms being used by the suspended and sacked employees.

These rooms are located in the staff quarters of sevadars and employees of the gurdwara in its complex. Devotees alleged that the employees concerned had consumed these items. The employees were not available for their comments.

The use of liquor and meat by SGPC employees and even by anybody else within the complex of a gurdwara is strictly prohibited. When the matter was brought to the notice of Jathedar Makkar, he took a very serious view of this malfeasance and came down heavily on the trio for using highly objectionable material in the gurdwara complex. The manager and the granthi were transferred for their inability in checking their erring juniors. — PTI

Jalandhar, June 3
The Neterheen Jagriti Sangh has reiterated its resolve to continue with its agitation till the government does not fill all the vacancies reserved for them in various departments.

Talking to The Tribune here today, president of the outfit Sunnypal Singh said they had been raising their demands for the past many years but to no avail. “There is 1 per cent reservation in government jobs for the visually challenged and posts meant for us have not been filled till date,” he said. Hundreds of professionally qualified youngsters were running from pillar to post to get their due but had been turned away by callous bureaucrats.

Even elected representatives and ministers had cold-shouldered them, he alleged. “Our members are on strike in front of the office of the Social Welfare Department in Chandigarh but till date no one from the government side has called us for parleys. We have been left with no choice but to intensify our struggle,” he added. — TNS
