HRAP against luxury tax
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, December 8
The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Punjab (HRAP) has opposed the state government’s move to impose luxury tax on the hotel industry.

In a representation to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, HRAP chief patron Paramjeet Singh Budhiraja and general secretary Amarvir Singh said here today that the hotel industry in Punjab had been passing through a phase of recession for the past many years.

On the one hand, the government was trying to promote tourism and, on the other, new taxes were being planned. If the luxury tax was levied, the hotel industry would reach on the verge of closure, they said.

The hotels in Punjab were paying a tax on food items at 12.5 per cent, whereas it was 4 per cent in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The industry was being charged the commercial rate of electricity instead of industrial rate, the HRAP leaders said.

They told Badal that Haryana and Delhi had imposed luxury tax on those hotels where the room rent is Rs 2,000 or more.

They urged Badal not to further burden the hotel industry with fresh tax.
