Jalandhar, December 5 The chief secretary was talking to mediapersons at the DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology here. He had come to attend PTU’s annual convocation. Though the earlier deadline issued was December 7, the chief secretary said a six-month extension had been sought so that the parties concerned, including the employees and consumers, could be consulted. Hinting that the scheduled power cuts could continue, the chief secretary said, “In summers, we had been buying power at Rs 6.5 to Rs 7 per unit to meet the demand. The consumers have had a relief in summers and should be ready to bear with few cuts in winters.” Ramesh Inder Singh announced that the state government was coming up with 1800 MW power stations at Talwandi Sabo and 2000 MW power at Rajpura. “Another one is coming up at Goindwal where land is being acquired for the purpose. We are also entering a tie-up with the National Rural Electricity Corporation so that the situation becomes more favourable,” he pointed out. Claiming that the proposal to set up a nuclear power plant in Punjab had been cleared, he said various factors, including feasibility and safety, were being worked out by union government experts. “We have also asked the Rajasthan and Haryana governments to take our share for the nuclear plant set up in the two states,” he revealed. Maintaining that the financial condition of the state was not bad, he said Punjab was trying to manage the debt liability that was left behind of March 21, 2007. “But development works are continuing,” he said, adding that a knowledge centre was coming up at Mohali and an international airport too would be ready by next year. Regarding vacant posts of DC and SSP in the state, he said the sanctioned posts of IAS and IPS officers in the state were far too low. “More districts have come up but the number of posts are the same,” he replied. As chairman of the PTU-BOG, he said the system of appointment would be changed in the university. “The BOG has decided to advertise the posts. The existing contractual employees will also be eligible for applying for the new posts which will be filled by proper system though they will have to compete with other candidates,” he said. Meanwhile, as many as 10 farmers’ bodies, who are protesting the proposed unbundling of PSEB, disrupted traffic outside the city bus stand and Nakodar road for around two hours. Jalandhar, December 5 This was stated by M. Natrajan, scientific advisor to defence minister, director general of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and secretary of department of defence research and development, at the sixth annual convocation of Punjab Technical University (PTU) at DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology here today. As many as 250 students received degrees at the convocation today. The noted scientist said the country needed young minds to nurture and enhance science and technology base. “India needs a dramatic uplift of its science and technology base. A look at the manpower in India and abroad indicates that India stands at less than 10 per 1000 population which is dismal as compared to 180 in Canada, 110 in Japan, 86 in Germany, 76 in Israel and 21 in the US,” he said. “It is important for India to consolidate and strengthen its base in the field of material science development because it is an essential requirement for devising light weight materials, nano materials, composites, smart and stealth materials and micro-electromagnetic materials. Sensors and robotics is yet another area of development. Energy sector too needs to develop alternative and renewable sources of power,” he added. A Padam Shri awardee, Natrajan said, “Today we can boast of supersonic cruise missile Brahmos, indigenous systems for command guidance, smokeless propellants, re-entry vehicle structure, multi-target engagements, folding fin mechanism and tandem warheads.” Gen S.F. Rodrigues, Governor Punjab and chancellor of PTU, awarded 16 students with Ph.D degrees, 19 with M.Tech degrees and the rest with B.Tech, B. Pharmacy, MBA, MCA, BBA, BCA and MSc (IT) degrees. Ramesh Inder Singh, chief secretary, Punjab and chairman of PTU-BOG, N. S. Kalsi, secretary, department of technical education and industrial training, and V. K. Sharma, special secretary, Ch Swarna Ram, minister for technical education, were other dignitaries present. Governor’s wife J. Call For ‘Satyagraha’
Nawanshahr, December 5 Addressing the dharna, CITU state general secretary Raghunath Singh criticised the “anti-poor” policies based on liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation being pursued by the central and state governments. The governments were running away from their primary duties in a welfare state. Even the education and healthcare facilities were being privatised, consequently depriving the underprivileged sections of society of basic amenities in a democratic state, he said. 15-point demand

Their main demands were fixation of the minimum wages for labourers, control the ongoing increase in unemployment and price hike, remove corruption from government machinery, drop proposed privatisation of banks and LIC, make availability of health and education facilities

Batala man assaulted by wife, in-laws
Batala, December 5 A matrimonial dispute between Harinder Singh and his in-laws took an ugly turn today when his wife Jasbir Kaur, resident of Amritsar, along with her mother, brother, maternal grandfather and three others reached his house and assaulted him with sharp-edged weapons. He ran inside the house to save himself but he was fired upon thrice. After that the assailants fled away.
The injured has been admitted to the local civil hospital in a critical condition. A case under sections 307, 452, 148 and 149 of the IPC and sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act has been registered.

Hoshiarpur, December 5 By his remarks on the controversy, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had created doubts in the minds of peace-loving Punjabis about his integrity and had also instilled a sense of insecurity among them, further said Dogra. He condemned the demand by SAD general secretary Balwinder Singh Bhunder for the removal of photographs of late Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi from Parliament House. Bhunder had, thus, tried to compare Indira and Rajiv Gandhi with Bhindranwale, alleged Dogra. Calling PPCC president Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to Akal Takht by some Sikh leaders for criticising the SGPC and the SAD was not a healthy sign for democracy, he added. He said Badal represented in the assembly all communities in his capacity as Chief Minister of Punjab. He must clarify his stand on the controversy, he demanded. He alleged that the installation of the portrait of Bhindranwale was done as part of a conspiracy to disturb peace in Punjab for narrow political gains. Kapurthala, December 5 The journalists went to the local civil hospital to cover the inauguration ceremony of Navjeevan Kendra drug de-addiction centre by the Punjab governor. The project officer of the centre asked mediapersons to leave the centre and allegedly misbehaved with some of them using rough language. Talking to mediapersons at the Sarb multiplex, Chopra was visibly happy to be Talking about the controversy, he said, “Everybody has his own perspective. Even I may not like something about somebody else’s work. If something about my movie doesn’t suit someone else’s point of view, I don’t have any qualms about it.” Referring to the growing popularity of comic flicks, he said, “Comedy indeed is pretty popular with the people these days but that’s not my area of expertise. I like working on scripts which are serious and romantic.” He said making Veer-Zara . gave him immense satisfaction and he was planning to start his next directorial flick in April. Talking about his other upcoming projects, he said, “Tashan, starring Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Anil Kapoor, is slated for release in April next year and animation film Roadside Romeo would supposedly hit the screens in June 2008.” When asked whether he was planning on some Punjabi film, he said, “I have been making movies which talk of or deal with Punjabi culture. ”When asked what he thought about the various corporate houses which were funding the film industry, he said, “Money alone can never make a movie.” |
