Ram Setu protest gives commuters harrowing time
Phagwara, September 12
Activists of Shri Ram Setu Raksha Manch, led by senior RSS leader Lala Balwant Rai Gupta, held demonstrations and disrupted traffic on national highway for nearly three hours here on Wednesday as a part of nationwide protest against union government’s move to demolish Shri Ram Setu. A large number of commuters were seen stranded at the bus stand. The situation at the railway station was no better. Chattisgarh Express 1AJL trains were detained at Phagwara station, while 3049 9 (UP) Howrah Express and 1JRJ stalled at Chiherru and Jalandhar Cantt stations respectively. Road traffic was diverted via link roads, Heavy security arrangements were made by the police.

Cyber crime: Govt gets cracking, sets up panel

Phagwara, September 12
Government will soon set up a high-powered committee to formulate a comprehensive action plan to check cyber crime in the country. According to a statement issued here today a government spokesperson said, the committee would be set up on public-private partnership model and will have IT professionals and officials from law-enforcing agencies as its members.

Bag snatching: CCTV sees it all

A close circuit TV (CCTV) camera installed at the Cash and Carry shop in Phagwara helped the district police in identifying two youths who had snatched a bag containing a debit card from Canadian citizen Geeta Nagpal Tuli from the Model Town locality, near Geeta Mandir, about a week ago.

Doaba College ‘ragging’: ABVP protests

Over 100 members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a demonstration at Doaba College here today in protest against the alleged ragging of a student by NSUI workers on the campus some time back.

Five booked for dowry torture
Hoshiarpur, September 12
Police has booked four of a family and a woman for allegedly harassing Baljit Kaur, a resident of Panwan. A case has been registered against Sukhwinderjit Singh, his father Kuldip Singh, mother Darshna Kaur, sister Goldi and Maya Devi, wife of Jagdish Lal, residents of Bainchan (Hariana), under sections 498 A, 406 and 420 of the IPC on Tuesday evening.

Morning mania

Batala: On the countrywide bandh call given by the Rameshwaram Shri Ram Setu Raksha Manch, traffic was blocked for three hours on the national highway at Gandhi Chowk here today.

About 1,000 activists of the manch, Ved Mandir, Dainik Prarthana Sabha, Bajrang Dal, Vishav Hindu Parishad and many other Hindu organisations blocked the traffic from 8 am to 11 am.

The protesters raised slogans against the “Setu Samundarm Priyojna,” which will allegedly destroy Ram Setu connecting southern most Indian parts with Sri Lanka. Suresh Bhatia, convener of the Bajrang Dal for Amritsar and Gurdaspur, and J.N. Sharma, vice-president, Vishav Hindu Parishad, Punjab, addressed the gathering.

Activists give memo to DC

Nawanshahr:Activists of various social and religious organisations, under the aegis of Sri Rameshram Ram Setu Raksha Manch, blocked traffic at Chandigarh Chowk for three hours here today. The protest was held as part of a nationwide call to protest against the alleged anti-Hindu stance of the UPA government. Activists submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner for onward submission to the President of India.

Cyber crime: Govt gets cracking, sets up panel

Government will soon set up a high-powered committee to formulate a comprehensive action plan to check cyber crime in the country. According to a statement issued here today a government spokesperson said, the committee would be set up on public-private partnership model and will have IT professionals and officials from law-enforcing agencies as its members.

It was learnt that the committee would look at threats arising out of cyber crimes and suggest necessary remedies to the government.”

The committee would recommend ways to the government to curtail cyber crime within a limited time period to apprehended culprits without delay.

The spokesperson, however, did not disclose the detailed frame work of the committee. The concerned parliamentary standing committee has informed the ministry that it had cleared the new cyber crime bill, the statement added.

Besides, steps by the government to prevent cyber crime, active participation by citizens is also required to curb the menace, he added. Since cyber crime is rampant in countries such as the US, UK and Japan, co-operation among the leading groups of various countries is necessary to collectively fight cyber crimes.

Several police organisations and laboratories of Directorate of Forensic Sciences have their own cyber crime cells and computer forensic facilities, he informed. The government is making constant efforts to equip law enforcing agencies with latest technology to enable them to deal with cyber crimes efficiently, the statement added.

Bag snatching: CCTV sees it all

A close circuit TV (CCTV) camera installed at the Cash and Carry shop in Phagwara helped the district police in identifying two youths who had snatched a bag containing a debit card from Canadian citizen Geeta Nagpal Tuli from the Model Town locality, near Geeta Mandir, about a week ago.

Actually, the snatchers purchased different items worth Rs 24,000 from the Cash and Carry shop using the debit card. When Tuli came to know that her debit card was used by the snatchers, she informed cops, who, in turn, contacted the trader. Subsequently, they provided them the pictures of the two boys who had come for shopping. DSP (city-II) Rajeswar Singh said the police had identified both the accused from their photographs and both would be arrested soon.In yet another incident of stealing a bag, containing an ATM card, from a car, the police identified the culprit from the CCTV camera installed at the ATM of the Centurion Bank of Punjab. The culprit withdrew Rs 92,000 using from two different ATMs. The bag had been stolen from the car of Amarjeet Singh a few weeks back.Meanwhile, the police claimed to have solved as many as 27 cases of chain, purse and mobile snatching with the arrest of five criminals.

Talking to mediapersons, Rajeswar Singh said that the five arrested accused were identified as Aashu, Sunil, Rashpal Singh, Gurwinder Singh, alias Laddi, and Vicky. Earlier three alleged chain snatchers, Gurpreet Singh, Parminder Singh and Vinay Sharma, had been arrested, he said adding, they were remanded in judicial custody. Rajeswar Singh said eight mobile phones were recovered from them.

Doaba College ‘ragging’: ABVP protests

Jalandhar, September 12
Over 100 members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a demonstration at Doaba College here today in protest against the alleged ragging of a student by NSUI workers on the campus some time back.

While principal R.P. Bhardwaj was away to Guru Nanak Dev University for some official work, teachers too had left the campus because of their ongoing strike under the banner of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) when the incident occurred. This led to much tension and policemen in large numbers had to be called in to check the occurrence of any untoward incident.

District president of the ABVP Rajan Angural said the protest was held in support of a student, Ajay Maratha, who was ragged by NSUI members. He said he and other members wanted action against the culprits. He said Maratha was a student of journalism, while the staff of the department said no student by that name was enrolled with them.

Bhardwajdenied occurrence of any such incident. He said outsiders had barged into the campus and created ruckus. He said he would be back in the college tomorrow and inquire into the matter.

A case has been registered against Sukhwinderjit Singh, his father Kuldip Singh, mother Darshna Kaur, sister Goldi and Maya Devi, wife of Jagdish Lal, residents of Bainchan (Hariana), under sections 498 A, 406 and 420 of the IPC on Tuesday evening.

Baljit in her complaint stated that she was forced to work in an orchestra run by her husband and tortured for dowry when she refused to do so. She said at the time of her wedding to Sukhwinderjit Singh in February this year she was told that her husband was employed with the wireless department of the Punjab police at Sangrur but later she found out that he ran an orchestra group.

She alleged her husband forced her to work for the orchestra but her in-laws family tortured her for dowry and also demanded a car from her parents when she refused.
