Head-on crash leaves 4 dead, 10 injured
Jalandhar, September 6 The bus, belonging to the Jalandhar depot-I, was coming from Amritsar when it collided with the oil tanker, which was on its way to Amritsar from the oil depot near Suchi Pind in Jalandhar. The collision took place as the drivers of both the vehicles were reportedly trying to overtake autorickshaws in front of them. One of the autorickshaws also collided with the vehicles. Three of the deceased have been identified as bus driver Kuldip Singh, tanker driver Tarsem Singh and a woman travelling in the bus, Santosh, a resident of the Model House locality of the city. The fourth deceased, a woman travelling in the bus, could not be identified till the filing of this report. “Five persons who were boarding the autorickshaw, including its driver Janak Raj, were also injured in the collision. The injured were admitted to the local civil hospital and Sacred Heart Hospital in Maqsoodan,” said a Kartarpur police official. The condition of three injured persons was reported to be serious. |
‘Subsidies for farmers soon’

Nawanshahr, September 6 He was addressing a gathering of farmers at the regional farmers mela held at the PAU’s Kandi Research Centre, Ballowal Saunkhari, on Thursday. The mela aims at promoting horticulture and cultivation of vegetables in the Kandi area. PAU vice-chancellor Manjit Singh Kang exhorted the farmers to go in for the crops which needed less water. Expressing concern over the problem of soil erosion, Various departments of the PAU had put up their exhibition stalls at the mela for making farmers aware of the latest techniques and researches in the field of agriculture. Besides, in the technical sessions, the PAU experts gave tips on plant breeding, genetics and biotechnology and animal husbandry, etc. |

Addressing media persons, SSP R.N. Dhoke said Balwinder, a Moharar head constable at Quila Lal Singh police station, used to send forged verification reports to the SSP office by putting up signatures of both verification officers ASI Harpal Singh and SHO Kulbir Singh. “The matter came to light when SHO Kulbir Singh asked about any pending verification reports from the accused. Balwinder told him that there was none. However, on investigating the matter Kulbir found that Balwinder had not produced certain verification forms lying with him. In fact, Balwinder had verified the reports on his own using forged signatures of the authorities concerned,” the SSP said. |
Special drive to identify addicts

Jalandhar, September 6 The treatment for de-addiction is available free of cost at the drug de-addiction centre of the civil hospital. Besides, treatment provisions have been made to provide medicines to the addicts free of cost. These medicines are sponsored by the Red Cross Society of the district. Under the special drive, the district administration has also instructed around 250 medical officers of different villages falling in the district to identify addicts in their areas and encourage them for going treatment at civil hospital. The de-addiction centre, which was started just few weeks ago, initially admitted 52 addicts. Out of these 52, 30 have been discharged, while 22 are still undergoing the treatment at the centre. In a recent visit to the centre, deputy commissioner Ajit Singh Pannu and SSP Arpit Shukla along with civil surgeon JP Singh met the patients. They talked to the addicts and asked them about difficulties being faced by them. The spokesman said patients had expressed satisfaction over the treatment at the hospital. The addicts should come forward to give up drugs and administration will help them, added spokesman. Meanwhile, persons who want to donate for the noble cause of helping these drug-addicts can deposit money with the Red Cross Society’s bank account number 09292151006838 at Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), near PUDA office. |
Entry issue: SAD men complain to CM
Nawanshahr, September 6 The delegation urged the CM to rein in the bureaucracy to restore the prestige of the SAD workers in the district. The SAD leaders claimed the CM took serious note of the issue and issued instructions on the phone to some top officials to give due regard to the SAD workers. Ironically, during the Congress regime too, ruling party leaders had organised protest meetings and some had even participated in a protest dharna against the district officials, to express their resentment over their impudence. |

Jalandhar, September 6 Most of them said they had been taken in by the ads in papers, besides the smooth talk of travel agents JM Overseas of Chandigarh’s Sector 41-D. All of them paid sums ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh to the agents, he added. The youth had been sent to work for Sahara Al-Roala Company that deals in general trading and construction work. They had been working for the past 45 days. They did not have any drinking water and electricity. They were not paid anything either. When they reached Kuwait, they were given only 10 Kuwaiti dinars (about Rs 1,455) with which they bought some food and utensils. Nothing was paid after that. When they demanded salaries, their employer whipped them. The youths were also critical of the role played by the Indian Embassy in Kuwait which did nothing to help them. Ironically, all have taken loans and sold land to make it big and have not even earned enough to repay the debts. Mullanpuri said the government should call a special session of the assembly to enact a stringent law to end the large-scale human trafficking. He said a special census should be done to identify the victims of the agents. It should be mandatory that all advertisements to carry a certificate from the SSPs endorsing the credentials of the agents. A special police squad to keep watch on the activities of such agents should be constituted which should have the power to raid the premises of unauthorised agents. There should also be a provision to attach the properties of the accused that could be auctioned to repay the money of those duped by them, he said. |
Dowry death: 4 booked
Hoshiarpur, September 6 According to police sources, Kashmir Singh, a son of Ram Singh of Ittian village in this district, stated in his complaint that his daughter Neeraj Bala was married to Mandeep Singh on December 11, 2005. Soon after the marriage, all the accused allegedly maltreated and tortured her for bringing more dowry. They demanded a car and her share in the property of Kashmir Singh. Yesterday morning, Neeraj Bala telephonically informed her father that she had an apprehension of her killing by the in-laws and requested him to rescue her. Kashmir Singh along with his relatives rushed to his daughter's house where he was told that Neeraj Bala had been admitted to a private hospital at Dasuya. When he reached the hospital, he was informed that Neeraj Bala had been shifted to Military Hospital, Jalandhar cantonment. When he reached there, he found his daughter dead. |
Patarian man duped of Rs 8.5 lakh
Hoshiarpur, September 6 According to the police, Pritam Singh, a resident of Patarian, alleged that Sidhu took Rs 8.50 lakh from him on the pretext of sending him to England and allegedly gave him fake documents. Pritam was arrested when he produced the documents at Mumbai airport. After his release from jail, he contacted the travel agent and asked him to return his money, but Sidhu did not give the money back. Instead he allegedly threatened Pritam with dire consequences. |

Jalandhar, September 6 Talking to mediapersons, DSP (city) Rajeshwar Singh Sidhu said the victim had gone to a city hospital to celebrate her birthday with her friends on Tuesday. The accused lured the victim and then kidnapped her. He forcibly took the girl to a hotel near Kathar on the Hoshiarpur road where he committed the crime. Some other persons had helped the accused in committing the crime.

Hoshiarpur, September 6 District education officer (secondary) Kamaljit Singh said keeping in view the limited resources of traditional energy, its use should be curtailed. He advised the schoolchildren to stop the unnecessary use of power in their houses for which they should also motivate their parents. The students should also spread awareness among the people, he added.
