In a special drive, district police arrested as many as 15 satta operators and seized Rs 9,430 from them on Saturday.

Lieutenant General Noble Thamburaj, GOC 11 Corps, interacted with the Bombay Sappers during a Jor Mela organised here on Sunday. About 1200 retired Bombay Sappers participated in the Jor Mela, organised for the first time. The Jor Mela provided a platform to increase interaction between veterans and soldiers.

The Punjab medical education and research department has issued directions that the Sri Guru Ramdas College of Nursing, Hoshiarpur, will admit only girl students in its nursing courses.The college, established in 1996, is one of the major nursing colleges of the Kandi area. The management of the college had approached the department that it should be allowed to take only female students.“We have been allowed to admit only girl students after our request in this regard to the Punjab medical education minister Tikshan Sood,” said college chairperson Davinder Kaur Aulakh.

Shopping on fake credit cards: One nabbed

Three persons trying to buy jewellery from a leading city jeweller, allegedly on fake credit cards of various banks, led to alerting the police and the arrest of one of them. Sensing trouble, two accomplices fled the spot.

Parveen Kumar was arrested today from a leading jewellery shop of the city, according to Vibhor Kumar, SHO police 4.

Hoping that the absconders would also be nabbed soon, Vibhor Kumar told The Tribune that the accused had come to Jagdambay Jewellers to purchase jewellery by using one of the fake credit cards.

Suspicion led Raman Negi, owner of the shop to call in the police, Vibhor added.

The three accused had already purchased a car, two DVD cameras and other valuable items from Patiala, Ludhiana and other districts, said Vibhor. The fake credit cards of different banks, including HDFC and ICICI were also recovered from the possession of the accused.

A case has been registered by the police under Sections 420, 465 and 466 of the IPC. The police is expecting some startling revelations after interrogation of the accused and his accomplices after their arrest, Vibhor Kumar added.

Grain Drain 
Govt suspends supply to 7 more depots

Phagwara, September 9
The Punjab government today suspended supply to seven more ration depots in the state after the detection of various irregularities during intensive checking campaign launched by the food and supply department for effective implementation of this welfare scheme of the government.

The department had registered an FIR against three ration depots and suspended the supply of 72 other depots for various irregularities detected during the checks last week.

It was learnt that the teams of food & supply department had conducted more than 1933 surprise raids on various ration depots to check irregularities in the implementation of Kanak-Dal Scheme.

Meanwhile, the state government has activated its distribution machinery for smooth supply of kanak and dal to the beneficiaries in the month of September. All ration depots which had deposited money for September stock had been issued direction to lift the stock from respective warehouses latest by September 15. It would be mandatory for each ration depot to start distributing stock by September 16 till end of this month.

Imposter held with Rs 1.5 lakh

Batala, September 9
The Batala police today arrested an imposter and recovered Rs 1.5 lakh from his possession, which he had withdrawn from a bank by forging the signature of his employer, a factory owner.

SSP Batala R. N. Dhoke said the imposter identified as Satish was working as a clerk with M/s N.K. Engineers and Fabricators situated at Mal Mandi. Satish stole some of the blank cheques of the firm on which he used to practice the forge signatures of his employer Deepak Aggarwal. Later, using the forged signatures he withdrew Rs 1.5 lakh from the bank.

Aggarwal lodged a complaint with the police immediately after he verified the account and found the amount missing. Thereafter, Satish was caught and the amount recovered from his house. — OC

Ragging Ban
Be strict or face music, Sud tells colleges

Phagwara, September 9
Tikshan Sud, minister, medical education and research, today issued directions to all principals and staff of all government and private medical and dental colleges to ensure an effective ban on ragging of new students in their respective institutes. In a stern warning that criminal action will be taken against any student indulging in ragging, the minister also appealed to new students to oppose the heinous practice of ragging and report the incident immediately to the principal and the higher authorities.

In a communiqué the minister has said any laxity shown by the management, administration, principal, faculty or staff in implementing the guidelines would invite stern disciplinary action would be treated very seriously. He asked the management, principal and staff to take effective steps to ensure that no new student became victim of ragging.

Calling upon the principals to constantly remain vigilant against this practice and monitor the situation on a day to day basis, he said principal and staff must watch the attitude of new comers and any sign of a depression noticed in 
new student should be probed deeply.

He called on the seniors to welcome new students with love as the juniors looked up to their senior students to lead them.

“My hands are full,” says the former Miss India-World, when asked about her upcoming projects.

Apart from Raj Kumar Santoshi-directed Halla Bol, she would be seen in a rib-tickler, Good Luck, in which she plays the role of a PR agency head.

The girl says her modelling and beauty pageant background made her Bollywood entry smoother. “I was lucky that I got good offers right in the beginning.”

The model-turned actress loves her glamorous image but also wants to do some meaningful roles.

“I would love to do something like Mughal-e-Azam and Mother India,” says the dusky beauty, who also endorses LG Electronics, Allen Solly and Lee Cooper to name a few.

Sayali, who was on her second visit to the Jalandhar, says she’s an ardent fan of Punjabi food.

15 ‘satta’ operators held

In a special drive, district police arrested as many as 15 satta operators and seized Rs 9,430 from them on Saturday.

The arrested Dara Satta operators were identified as Nihal Singh of Ghumiala, Paramjit Kumar of BDO colony, Mahilpur, Buta Khan and Rajesh Kumar, both of ward seven, Garhshankar, Deepak Kumar of Krishna Gali, Mukerian, Sukhwinder Singh of New Bhangala, Mohan Lal of Rehana Jattan, Jaswinder Singh, Amit Kumar, Ravi Kumar, Tarsem Lal, Ranjit Kumar, Harjit Singh, Subhash Chander and Sanjiv Kumar, all of Hoshiarpur city. — OC

About 1200 retired Bombay Sappers participated in the Jor Mela, organised for the first time. The Jor Mela provided a platform to increase interaction between veterans and soldiers.

The mela also provided an opportunity to the veterans to air their grievances at the cell established by record office, Bombay Engineer Group, Kirkee and Pay and Accounts Office (other ranks), Kirkee. Thamburaj and the colonel commandant of the Sappers addressed the gathering. — TNS
