Widow stripped naked, tied to tree
Amritsar, September 9
A 60-year-old widow was stripped naked, tied to a peepal tree and beaten up mercilessly by residents of Ramdiwali Hinduan village, under the Chawinda Devi police station, about 35 km from here, last evening. The suspects, who belong to the same village, also smeared her face black.

VB raids ex-terrorist Sukhi’s house
Jalandhar, September 9
A team of Vigilance Bureau (VB) raided at Mota Singh Nagar house of former militant-turned-police cat Sukhjinder Singh Sukhi, alias Harjit Singh Kahlon, today. The raid was conducted in connection with a case against former Punjab DGP S.S. Virk of amassing property disproportionate to his known sources of income after his arrest today. While Sukhi was not found at his residence, the VB sleuths seized several documents.

Image-building spree by VB?

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau is in the news again. The case it has registered against former Punjab DGP Sarabdeep Singh Virk, and three others, has once brought this “watchdog on corrupt Punjab officials” in the limelight again.

Police, media on tenterhooks
Kharar, September 9
The arrest of former Punjab DGP S.S. Virk form Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi sent the police and media in a tizzy. Rumours of Virk to be produced before the magistrate in Kharar courts, kept the police and media on tenterhooks. Police sources said the Kharar police had been asked to keep its force ready in case Virk was to be produced in Kharar.

Dalit marchers held
Sangrur, September 9
Around 75 Dalits, including women, who were taking out a march under the banner of the Dalit Dasta Virodhi Andolan, were today arrested at Ghorrenav village, 8 km from Lehragagga. The arrested persons included national president of the association Jai Singh, who was leading the march.
