It faced a barrage of caustic observations by High Court judges Uma Nath Singh and Rajive Bhalla in the Anil Kumar custody death case today, as at earlier hearings.Despite court’s repeated strictures to arrest SI Narinder Singh, accused of torturing 21-year-old Anil to death, nothing has been done so far.

As a fallout of the Gohana violence, tension prevailed in Mauli Jagran and Rajiv Colony throughout the day today. An angry mob smashed the windscreen of a municipal corporation vehicle parked in the area to protest against the “injustice” meted out to the Dalits.

Hospital shop closed; patients hit
Mohali, August 29
The sole medicine shop at the civil hospital here closed down today, leading to chaos among patients visiting the hospital. The medicine shop was being run under the aegis of the Red Cross Society and was being managed by one Satpal Singh. The latter claimed to have been “appointed” by the Red Cross to run the shop. He was forced to close the shop today following allegations that the Red Cross has sub-let the shop to him. Sub-letting of Red Cross Society shops is not allowed.

A male alligator at Chhat Bir Zoo today devoured his seven hatchlings. Their mother had been protecting them from her male partner ever since they were born in June.

The UT administration’s ambitious underground rainstorm drain system for the posh northern sectors has sunk without a trace. Standing testimony to the loss are a series of deep, dug-up pits, serving as potential death traps - one of them located in the community park right behind the official residence of Punjab Chief Minister.

Taverns told to provide ‘dal-roti’ at Rs 25

SI suspended in bribery case
Chandigarh/Mohali, August 29
A sub-inspector of the Mohali police, Gurpreet Singh, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) last evening for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh has been suspended. A local court today remanded Gurpreet Singh to judicial custody.

The nine-month-old boy who was kidnapped from Colony Number 5 late last night was found late in the evening today.

Attawa resident assaulted

Sarvesh of Attawa alleged that Rohit of the same colony assaulted him and stabbed him. he suffered cuts on his right cheek in the attack and was rushed to the Sector 16 Government Multi Speciality Hospital, from where he was later discharged after administering first-aid. A case under Sections 323 and 324 of the IPC has been registered.

Chandigarh FIESTA: Manav Mangal High School was declared the winning team at the ongoing Fanta Fiesta - 2007 held at Shivalik Public High School, Sector 41, here on Wednesday. The teams of Government Model School, Sector 16, and St Anne’s Convent School were adjudged the first and second runners-up, respectively.
