Anaemia prevalence high in slums: survey
Chandigarh, August 29 Anaemia, though easily treatable, is a national health problem, said Dr Ravi Raj Kahnna, managing director of the laboratories. Twenty five per cent of women and 17 per cent of men were found to be anaemic in city slums and rural areas in a recent survey, said Khanna, adding that this was a symptom of grave malnutrition. Improper functioning of the thyroid gland could be the cause of different unrelated symptoms like weakness, fatigue, constipation, weight loss and anaemia, he informed. |
St Joseph’s clinches ball badminton trophies
Chandigarh, August 29 In the boys’ section, St Joseph's CC, Moti Ram Arya SSS - 27 and Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Khuda Lohra, were equal, securing four points each. Joseph's CC was declared winner on the basis of the better turn average. GSSS finished runner-up, while MRA SSS - 27 got the third position. In the girls’ section, St Joseph's CC claimed the title with three wins. Government Senior Secondary School, Khuda Lohra, came second with two wins. St Joseph's School got the third place. Punjab chief parliamentary secretary Sital Singh gave away the prizes to the winners. GCG-42 celebrates National Sports Day
Chandigarh, Aug 29 TOURNAMENT: The Physical Education Department of Government College for Girls, Sector 11, celebrated National Sports Day on Wednesday. A badminton tournament was organised on the occasion, which invited huge participation and an enthusiastic and cheering audience. Promila Kaushal, principal of the college, congratulated the winners and gave away the prizes. Renu, Samritee and Neha Sharma were adjudged winners of the tournament. CELEBRATED: The department of physical education, Government College, Sector 11, celebrated the 102nd birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand with full enthusiasm and gusto on Wednesday. The day started early morning at 6.30am with a cross-country race. Dr A.N. Garg, principal of the college, inaugurated the event. A swimming competition was also conducted, followed by a prize distribution ceremony at the swimming pool. ANNOUNCEMENT: The DAV College, Sector 10, unit of the Students Organisation of Punjab University (SOPU) on Wednesday announced its panel for the upcoming students elections to be held next month. According to a press note issued by the unit, Aman Multani will be contesting for the post of president, Epsit Dhar for vice-president, Nishant for joint secretary, Rupinder Singh Pannu for general secretary and Mandeep Puri for press secretary. Mohali PARTY: Senior students of the Desh Bhagat Institute of Management and Computer Sciences organised a freshers’ party, here on Wednesday. Dr Zora Singh, chairman, Desh Bhagat Group, was the chief guest while Shalini Gupta, director, Desh Bhagat Institute, presided over the function. Tanveer was declared Mr Fresher and Shaminder Kaur Miss Fresher. Ravi and Nikita were adjudged Mr and Miss Personality, respectively. WWICS cup tournament from Sept 1
Chandigarh, August 29 Total of twelve teams from the tricity will take part in the tournament, said Azad Academy chairman Dronacharya Desh Prem Azad here today. All the teams have been divided into four pools. Each team will play two matches in the league phase consisting 25 overs each side in every match. Top team from each pool will qualify for semi-finals, in which matches will be of 30 overs each side while in the final, each side will play 35 overs. The opening match will be played between Desh Prem Azad Academy and St Anne's School at 10 am. |

Chandigarh, August 29 The selected players will represent the region in the forthcoming bi-regional meet. The regional KV hockey (girls) and chess tournaments were inaugurated by Col S.S. Kahlon, Deputy Commandant, 474 Enggs Brigade, at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Zirakpur. The chief guest took the salute from the marching contingents and declared the meet open. Host principal Annie Thariyan welcomed the chief guest, participants and escorts from eight KVs of the region. She also announced that the winning team would participate in the national competition to be held at Bhopal in Octber. |

Chandigarh, August 29 In the semifinals, Carmel Convent beat St Stephen's 1-0 in a well-contested match. Meghna netted the solitary goal in the third minute. In the other semi-final match, Saupin's School got the better of Mount Carmel - 47 by 2-0. Kishmita opened the account for the team in the eighth minute. She again struck in the 15th minute, leading the team to victory. From this tournament, the Chandigarh Football Association will select 25 probables for a coaching camp to prepare for the forthcoming AIFF Girls under-13 Festival at Puri (Orissa). Sports fest at High Court
Chandigarh, August 29 The sports fest is being organised under the aegis of the Chandigarh Lawyers Sports Association. Justice T.P.S Mann and Justice M.M.S. Bedi tried their hands at table tennis and surprised the spectators by showing deftness in this arena as well. Jaswant Singh Phokat, the association’s president, and working president Hemant Bassi said their body aimed at breaking the monotony of legal profession by organising such events. The legal fraternity welcomed the programmes as they helped inculcate a bonding and develop cordial relations between the Bench and the Bar. |

Chandigarh, August 29 The group (Planning) also remained winner in football and basketball, while the engine group clinched first place in cricket and shooting. The top position of volleyball was secured by the admin group. Chandigarh, August 29 “We were expecting trophies and cash awards from the department instead of certificates and medals,” voiced most of the sportspersons of various local schools. The department organised the function for the first time to boost the morale of 318 sportspersons of various disciplines. “If the department waned to honour us, they should have given us trophies and cash prizes,” said Latesh Sharma, a softball player. Another sportsperson Anusya said, “Although this is a good initiative, the awards were not up to our expectations. We already have several medals. This is just an addition.” “Cash awards could have proved more beneficial as many children belong to poor families,” said hockey coach S.K. Goswami. Himalayan Eagles conquer the mountains
Chandigarh, August 29 The team reached Padam, the starting point, on August 7 after high altitude acclimatisation at Leh. During the trek, they also celebrated India's 60th Independence Day on the Singhela Pass at 17,000 feet. Exhibiting high morale, camaraderie and physical fitness, the team covered around 150 kms from Padam to Lamayuru, negotiating high passes ranging up to 17,000 feet, fast flowing icy rivers and glaciers. The Himalayan Eagles are responsible for airlifting men and material for maintenance of forward posts situated in the hostile mountainous region. Treks can be undertaken from snow melt during the end of June to the first snowfall in the middle of October. Zanskar trek is amongst one of the toughest of the world. |
