Militants’ ultimatum to UP, Bihar labourers
Jammu, July 28 The Hizbul Mujaheedin and some separatist leaders have asked labourers from Bihar, UP, Orissa and other states to leave the valley in seven days. Migrant labourers have already started fleeing the Kashmir valley and bus loads of them have been reaching here since yesterday. The diktat has followed the rape and murder of a girl in the Langate area of the valley. These outfits have accused the migrant labourers of indulging in objectionable activities. The police has already booked four persons, including two locals, for involvement in the crime. Ramakant Dubey, state chief of the VHP, today said the diktat was another step towards ethnic cleansing in Kashmir. Nobody should be allowed to hound migrant labourers from the valley. He warned that such provocative statements of separatists could create problems elsewhere in the country and damage the secular fabric. Dubey said anyone accused of raping the girl should be dealt with under the law and all migrant labourers should not be targeted. Those trying to communalise the situation should be booked under the Public Safety Act. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has denounced as “negative thinking” the efforts to politicise the incident by asking non-local workforce to leave the valley. He said those who raised such slogans should also consider its fallout as thousands of Kashmiris were working and studying in other parts of the country where they could face similar reaction. He said the workforce coming to the valley from other states could not be judged on the basis of two odd persons involved in the case. A criminal had to be treated as a criminal and not as a resident of a particular place. Instead of politicising the issue, the focus should be on awarding exemplary punishment to the criminals. The Chief Minister lauded the police for solving the case in three days. He said the accused had confessed to the crime. He said the police had announced Rs 50,000 reward for providing information about the criminals, but on his instructions the reward money was raised to Rs 1 lakh. Of the four accused, Azad said two were local history-sheeters. They had earlier faced wrath of people who twice blackened their faces for indulging in eve-teasing. |
