Hurriyat strike call hits normal life in valley

Srinagar, July 6
Normal life was affected today across the Kashmir valley in response to the general strike call given by the Hurriyat Conference in protest against the series of alleged human rights violations and fake killings at the hands of security forces.

Demonstrations were held in parts of the interior city and around Jamia Masjid where pitched battles were fought between the agitating demonstrators and the police after the Friday prayers.

The police resorted to cane-charge and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators in the area. Shops and business establishments here and in major towns of the valley were closed. There was thin attendance in government offices and educational institutions remained closed.

The police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed teargas shells to chase away protesters in Kangan town, about 40 km from here on the Srinagar-Leh highway, today. The town witnessed demonstrations for the second consecutive day following the death of a civilian and an Army jawan, after a mob surrounded a place where the jawan and a girl were reportedly holding a meeting yesterday.

The Army has regretted the incident and ordered an inquiry into the matter, a defence spokesman said here. He added that according to the details available, sepoy Ranjit Singh and Rayeesa knew each other for some time. While the two met in Kangan, a mob surrounded the place. It is possible that in trying to escape from the mob, Ranjit opened fire in which Abdul Razaq Najar received injuries. Circumstances leading to the death of Ranjit Singh and Abdul Rahman Magray are still not very clear, he added.

Describing as unfortunate the raking up of controversies over the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) has blamed Mahant Deependra Giri for being proactive and circulating “misleading information” over the duration of the yatra, ice-lingam and use of helicopters.

A spokesman of the SASB said the mahant, who had been appointed member of the board, was as per the award of the tribunal given Rs 1.2 crore as one-time compensation by the board. His request for additional facilities could not be conceded to by the board, the spokesman added.

A controversy has arisen over the melting of the lingam this year.

He said that the melting of the lingam was mainly because of the heat wave in Kashmir during June. "If any security personnel have indulged in any unpermissible act the matter will be investigated and suitable action will be taken," he said. — TNS

Udhampur, July 6
A demonstration was held today in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district to protest against the killing of two “suspects” - Mohammed Ashraf and Mohammed Sultan - in an encounter by security forces in a nearby forest.

Security forces fired some shots in the air to disperse the unruly mob that resorted to pelting stones on the police.

While the Army claimed that those killed were militants who had fired at troops in which one Army jawan Satish received severe injuries, local persons strongly refuted the Army's claim and termed both to be fishermen.

The Army spokesman maintained that both persons were militants. “What they were doing in the jungle at 1 o'clock in the night”, he asked.

He said one AK rifle, two magazines, 36 rounds and two grenades were also seized from the slain persons.
