Hakam Singh, whose daughter Veer Pal Kaur's marriage is fixed for June 19, went to the village sarpanch Pohla Ram for intervention, but to no avail. The situation took a turn for the worse today when a group of dera followers led by Kashmir Singh and Pola Singh were embroiled in a brawl with some members of the Sikh community. Chhabeel causes chaos, disorder
Karnal, June 18 In the absence of any policeman to guard the traffic frequent jams hit the NH-1 till evening. Long queues of vehicles on both sides of the highway highlighted the plight of the local authorities in manning the traffic. It was observed that the chhabbel was organised at the Nirmal Kutiya traffic lightpoint. The volunteers had ‘captured' all the four sides of the lightpoint and erected tents to serve sweetened water and food items to the passers-by that led to frequent traffic jams. Commuters had a tough time as stranded passengers assailed the local authorities for allowing the volunteers in stopping the vehicles on the road. Besides, those travelling on national highway, local residents also faced the heat of the ill-organised function. Interestingly, the mini secretariat housing the offices of the DC, SP and DSPs is just a few yards away from the spot but no serious efforts were made to ensure smooth movement of traffic till evening. No effort was made by the local authorities to prevent the volunteers from obstructing the vehicles on the G.T. Road also. District police chief A. S. Chawala said he had instructed the chowki in charge to wind up the chhabeel early in the evening. He said that he would ensure that in future such activities were restricted only to the service lane to ensure smooth vehicular movement on the G.T. Road. |

Health cards for students soon
Yamunanagar, June 18 As per sources in the health department, the cards would be distributed from July 1 onwards. Medical details of children would be mentioned in the card. An official said such cards would come handy during health check-up camps organised in schools. It has been observed that a significant number of children suffer from diseases including anaemia but their parents, especially those with rural background, do not pay much attention towards the health of their wards. Regular health check-up camps under the ‘school health programme’ are held in schools regularly. If a child is found suffering from a serious illness, he or she is referred to the civil hospital while children with minor ailments are given on-the-spot medicine, informed sources. |
