Jamwal, Kawinder in mayoral race
Jammu, March 2 The BJP has fielded former mayor Kawinder Singh, who will be trying his luck for the coveted post which he had earlier held in 2005. The saffron party has the support of a Shiv Sena councillor. Significantly, the Congress has not fielded a candidate for the post of deputy mayor. The National Conference, which has six councillors, has fielded Dharamveer Singh Jamwal for the post of deputy mayor. The BJP has fielded Rajesh Gupta for the post. Independent candidate Neerja Khajuria also filed her candidature for the post deputy mayor on the last date of filing of nominations today. The PDP, with merely two councillors, has fielded Jaffar Javed Ahmad for the post of mayor, indicating the party's prevailing resentment against the ruling Congress in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly. In the 71-member Jammu municipal corporation, the Congress has 27 seats, the BJP 25, the NC 6, the PDP 2, the Shiv Sena and the Bahujan Samaj Party one each, while there are nine independents. |
Army jawan gets death
Srinagar, March 2 Sepoy K.C. Behra was awarded the death sentence by the general court martial last week for killing his senior officer and company commander Lieut-Col Saket Saxena on October 31, 2006, the spokesman said. He said the sentence was subject to confirmation by the Chief of the Army Staff and Central Government. It is perhaps for the first time that an Army jawan has been given the death sentence for killing an officer. Although no one from the Army was willing to comment on the quantum of sentence, it is widely believed that the jawan was given the severest punishment in order to arrest the trend of fratricide in the armed forces. Last year, the security forces, including the Army, witnessed several fratricide incidents.
