Top Taliban leader captured in Pakistan
Islamabad, March 2 Akhund was reportedly captured along with Amir Khan Haqqani, a Taliban commander in Zabul, and Abdul Bari, former Governor of Helmand province, local daily,The Dawn, reported today. He was on America's most wanted list and a member of the 10-man Taliban leadership council announced in June 2003. NATO and US officials view Akhund as one of the closest lieutenants of the outfit's chief, Mullah Omar, the other two being Mullah Akhtar Osmani and Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor. Akhund is the senior-most Taliban figure to have been captured since the ouster of the militia from power in Afghanistan in November 2001. He hails from Punjwai district of Kandahar province and was widely considered as the military chief of the Taliban forces. Former Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi, who was captured by the Pakistani security forces in Quetta in 2005, had said that Mullah Omar had told him to initiate an attack that would send a clear signal to the world that the Taliban were a force to be reckoned with. — PTI |
Tornadoes rip across US; 21 killed
New Orleans (Louisiana), March 2 "The administration is ready to help," Bush spokesman Scott Stanzel said, adding that Bush was "deeply saddened" by the deaths, which included a girl in Missouri and 18 others in Alabama, of whom 13 were in a school. Birmingham (Alabama): Tornadoes ripped across the southern and midwestern US, killing at least 19 persons, most of whom had taken shelter in a high school that collapsed in southern Alabama. Seventeen persons died in the southern Alabama town of Enterprise, where the school building was torn open by the twister, state emergency management agency spokeswoman Yasmie Richardson said. Governor Bob Riley, who declared a state of emergency and sent 100 troops to the town, said there was at least one more death elsewhere in Alabama and rescue workers were still moving debris to search for survivors. Another death was reported in Missouri. Television news footage showed helicopters landing on the football field near wreckage of the school in Enterprise while ambulances came and went. The shredded building was surrounded by broken trees and overturned cars. Emergency officials told local television that at least one teacher was among those killed at the school. CNN quoted an eyewitness as saying that he carried the bodies of two young girls out of the building. ''Enterprise has suffered major and widespread damage,'' Riley said. — AFP, Reuters |
