Water war between Haryana, Delhi
Chandigarh, December 29 A spokesman of the Haryana Government said here yesterday that water had been supplied to Delhi even at the cost of drinking water needs of the state's important towns like Gurgaon, Sonepat, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Bhiwani, Rewari and Narnaul. He said the water flow in the Yamuna during this month had been very low as compared to last year. As against about 4,000 cusecs at the Hathni Kund Barrage last year, the flows had been around 2,300 to 2,600 cusecs this year. In spite of this, honouring the Supreme Court order, Haryana had been releasing around 600 cusecs consistently for Delhi at Munak against 300 cusecs in December last year. The spokesman said in fact the problem was more of Delhi's making as, in spite of repeated requests, Delhi was diverting water from the Wazirabad treatment plant to unauthorised pumping stations like Sonia Vihar in a clandestine manner. He said all efforts by Haryana to have a joint supervision of the water lifted had been resisted by Delhi. Even a pumping station like Sangam, which normally should not lift water from the Yamuna, at times lifted very large quantities. In such situations, Haryana found it very difficult to maintain the pond level at Wazirabad in spite of seriously curtailing the drinking water supplies to its own villages and towns, including those in the NCR. Because of all these reasons, in spite of the best efforts of Haryana, the pond level fluctuated sometimes even though the water released this year was almost double of that of last year. The spokesperson also pointed out that certain power stations in other states upstream of the Hathni Kund Barrage, caused heavy fluctuations in the water flow. For example, on December 25, the flow which was 2,970 cusecs at 6 am became 2,299 cusecs at 8 am. This low flow continued till 8 pm. In such situations, fluctuation in the water flow downstream was unavoidable. On the other hand, he said, Delhi sent untreated sewage towards Faridabad and Mewat districts. "The irony is that this untreated and highly polluted sullage is counted as water returned to Haryana in lieu of clean Yamuna water supplied by it to Delhi. There is considerable resentment in Haryana over the issue. Delhi, however, feels secure in the shadow of the Supreme Court order and has consistently ignored the requests of Haryana to do something about this polluted water," the spokesman said. |
Industrial townships in Haryana not on farmland
Chandigarh, December 29 It has been decided that the four Integrated Industrial Model Townships (IMTs) to be developed by the Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation (HSIIDC) will be set up only in the area which can be urbanised. These townships are being developed in Rohtak, Faridabad, Kharkhauda (Sonepat) and Jagadhari. While a major portion of land for IMTs at Rohtak and Faridabad is under notification for acquisition, the plans for the remaining two IMTs are in the final stages of approval. Talking to TNS here today, Mr Rajiv Arora, Managing Director, HSIIDC, said that only land kept for urbanisation as per the Draft Development Plan of these districts has been selected for developing the IMTs. “The IMTs at Rohtak and Faridabad will come up on 2000 acres each. The Kharkhauda IMT will be the largest, and will come up on 5000 acres, while the one at Jagadhari will come up on 700 acres," he said. These IMTs are being modelled on the lines of the hugely successful IMT at Manesar. These will be self sufficient townships, which will have industries, commercial office space, health care and education facilities and housing facilities for the labourers employed here. The component of land to be reserved for housing will be need - based — depending on the employability of the industries that come up here. Mr Arora said that while 1832 acres (of a total of 2000 acres) for the IMT, Faridabad, has been notified for acquisition, the remaining area will be acquired after the revenue records have been examined. Similarly, 900 acres (of a total of 2000 acres) for IMT Rohtak has been notified for acquisition. “The Town and Country Planning Department is now finalising the plans for the IMTs to be developed at Kharkhauda and
Jagadhari," he added. Officials in HSIIDC said that there would be focussed development in these IMTs and heterogeneous industrial activity would be encouraged for development. Since two of the IMTs (Faridabad and Kharkhauda) are coming up in the National Capital Region (NCR), only non -polluting industry would be allowed to come up in
these IMTs. |

Truck crushes 2 Home Guards
Yamunanagar, December 29 The condition of the three injured were stated to be serious. In another accident, three motorcycle-borne persons, including two constables of the Home Guards, were killed when they were allegedly run over by a truck on the Ambala- Jagadhri national
highway. Two of them were brothers. As per police sources, the school bus had a virtual head-on collision with the three-wheeler near Piplimajra village on the Jagadhri-Paonta Sahib national highway. The collision was so powerful that the three-wheeler turned turtle. Police sources said the bus was going towards Khezrabad and the three-wheeler was bound to
Jagadhri. Ekram (36) of Khezrabad, his nephew Sultan (8) and Satpal (40) of Dasora village here were killed on the spot. Vinod of Gujarat succumbed to his injuries at Civil Hospital, Jagadhri. The child died after he got entangled in a barbed wire erected by the Forest Department along the
road. Lakshman, Ruldi Devi, Somi Devi and Palo Devi, all relatives and resident of Bhogpur village, sustained serious injuries. They were taken to Civil Hospital where doctors referred them to the PGI, Chandigarh. It is reported that those who were referred to the PGI were still at the Civil Hospital when the reports last came in. The cause behind the delay in shifting the victims to the PGI was because 'there were no relatives' to accompany them to Chandigarh. The hospital administration allegedly took no initiative in shifting the patients to the PGI. The doctors had also referred Vinod to the PGI but he died at the hospital after struggling for life for more than one-and-a- half hour, sources alleged. Neither the CMO nor the Superintendent of Police were available for comments. School bus driver Gurlaz Singh of Kakroni village here surrendered at Khezrabad police station in the evening. In the second accident, two head constables of the Home Guards and their friend, who were returning to Maheshwari village on a motorcycle, died after their bike was hit by a truck on the Ambala-Jagadhri national highway near Rakshak Vihar police post. The impact was so powerful that the three occupants of the bike were thrown away by several meters and the bike was completely damaged. The truck driver fled from the spot after leaving the vehicle behind. Constable Rajvant Singh (40) died on the spot, while his brother Rajwinder Singh (42) died at Civil Hospital, Jagadhri. The third occupant constable Jyoti Ram (45) died at Civil Hospital of Yamunanagar after being referred there from Jagadhri. The brothers were resident of Maheshwari village here while Jyoti Ram lived in

Micro-credit facility for rural women
Chandigarh, December 29 Micro-credit, the concept that recently got Mohammad Yunus of Bangladesh the Nobel Prize, is going to be introduced in Haryana exclusively for the rural women in the state. On January 3, the Women and Child Welfare Department of Haryana will sign an agreement with the Rashtriya Mahila Kosh (RMK) to launch micro-credit facility in the state. Earlier Ms Anuradha Gupta, Secretary of the Women and Child Welfare Department, Haryana, and Ms Sneh Lata Kumar, Executive Director, RMK, got down to the brass tacks of introducing micro-credit in the state. It was decided that the Haryana State Women Development Corporation would act as the nodal agency for the RMK. The RMK, a Union Government outfit, usually operates through Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) to extend micro-credit facilities to rural women. In the absence of such NGOs in the state, the Sakshar Mahila Samooh (SMS) in the villages will be roped in to handle the business of offering small loans to rural women. The SMSs, as the name suggests, are outfits consisting of the educated women of a village. The SMSs will acquire funds from the Women Development Corporation, the nodal agency for the RMK in Haryana, and then extend a loan to one or more women self-help groups in the area. |
No forcible conversion in district: DC
Hisar, December 29 “Still, we will ensure that communal harmony is maintained in the district and nobody would be allowed to take the law into their hands,” the SSP said. While the district administration has asked the SDM to get the matter enquired, different views regarding the issue are coming up from various quarters. Mr Chawla said today that a section of the media was unnecessarily playing up the issue for the reasons best known to their managements. He, however, observed that peaceful celebration of Christmas showed that communal harmony prevailed among the local residents. The SSP asked the local social, political and religious organisations to maintain peace and keeping the larger interest of people in mind. He appealed to the residents not to be misled by the propaganda of any individual or organisation. Mr Chawla said while no complaint had been received from Gangwa or Ludas villages, a Christian resident of Agroha had alleged that he was facing threat to life. “We are making efforts for amicable settlement of the issue and hope to resolve it with the help of local residents,” he added. Meanwhile, the VHP state general secretary, Mr Vijay Sharma, has alleged that some Christian missionaries were trying to carry out conversions on the pretext of providing education to the poor. "The VHP is awakening the masses against the design to lure Dalit children with free food and books," he maintained. |
Govt a failure on all fronts: BJP
Yamunanagar, December 29 The newly elected state president of the BJP, Mr Atam Prakash Manchanda, said this during a press conference today. “The BJP leaders and workers would visit each house, street, hut and colony in the state to expose the failures of the state government. Our workers will tell the people that the Congress government has not fulfilled any of its promises mentioned in the election manifesto”, he said. “During the Congress rule an unprecedented rise in prices has taken place and the law and order situation has worsened”, said Mr Manchanda, who claims that in the coming six months a new face of the BJP would be visible. Mr Manchanda said the future policies of the state unit of the party would be decided at the Jind meeting. He said old and new party workers would be assigned responsibilities at the macro level. “We would come to power in the state as the party would not go in for any alliance in the state in future”, he said. He also criticised the government on the SEZ issue. He said the BJP was in favour of giving share to farmers in SEZ whose lands were being acquired. Regarding Congress veteran and former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal’s entry into the party, Mr Manchanda said, “If he (Bhajan Lal) would approach the BJP, his case would be considered on merit”. The new BJP president claimed that the virat Hindu sammelan of the RSS in the state was a big success. “The number 2 (two MLAs) in the Vidhan Sabha would prove auspicious for the BJP. Once we had only two MPs in Parliament and our number soared in later elections. The same would happen in Haryana”, said Mr Manchanda when asked why the BJP was not faring well. |
Pinjore-Baddi stretch
Baddi, December 29 Various industrial organisations, including the CII, Himachal Pradesh, the BBN Industries Association, the Federation of Himachal Industries and the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industries, have approached the Roads and Surface Ministry office in Chandigarh time and again but despite assurances nothing has happened so far. Interestingly, the stretch of road from Pinjore to Baddi falls under the constituency of the Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana and most of these commuters are residents of Pinjore and Panchkula. It is learnt that the road repair work was allotted to a contractor but he is not expediting the work. Surprisingly, the authorities are also showing helplessness in getting the work done from the contractor. The industrial organisations feel that the roads leading to the Baddi, Barotiwala and Nalagarh areas are on the lowest priorities of the Haryana and Himachal Pradesh Governments whereas the industrialisation of this belt has contributed a lot for the economic development of adjoining areas of these
states. |
