Looking Back 2006
A successful year for Ambala cops
Rahul Das
Tribune News Service

Ambala, December 24
The year gone by was marked by political upheavals, a fighter aircraft crash, arrest of two dreaded gang leaders and a major recruitment scam.

Political developments took place at regular intervals throughout the year. Ambala Cantt MLA Devender Bansal tendered his resignation, albeit for less than 24 hours. Mr Bansal said that he is tendering his resignation as due consideration is not being given towards Ambala Cantt Assembly segment for carrying out development work by the Haryana Chief Minister. He later took back his resignation after he received assurance that Ambala Cantt area will not be ignored.

The proposal of the delimitation commission to break up Naggal Assembly seat and merge its area into other Assembly segments directly affected Naggal MLA and former Haryana Revenue Minister Nirmal Singh. The proposal has forced Mr Nirmal Singh to explore other Assembly seats from where he can continue his political ambitions.

Ambala city MLA Venod Sharma tendered his resignation from ministership over his son Manu Sharma's involvement in the Jessica Lal murder case. Mr Sharma's resignation proved to be a blow for political strength of Ambala district which has floundered in developmental progress in the past due to the lack of political initiative.

In the fag end of the year, the political atmosphere was surcharged by the rally addressed by Bhiwani MP Kuldeep Bishnoi. A number of Bhajan Lal loyalists came out into the open which clearly showed that Congress is a divided house. Even as the rally was being held at Anaj Mandi, Ambala Cantt, a `Samarthan' rally in favour of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was held in Sadar area.

Besides political developments, a fighter aircraft crashed in Ambala city on September 28. Squadron Leader V Naik, who was piloting the MiG 29 fighter aircraft, managed to bail out safely. The aircrash took place in an empty field at Saddopur village near the Ambala-Chandigarh highway. Since 2002, eight fighter aircrafts, which have taken off from the Ambala airbase, have crashed.

For the police, the year was particularly good as they managed to nab two dreaded gang leaders Nishan Singh and Bobby and effectively bring down the curtains on the constant gang war. To the credit of Ambala SP Amitabh Dhillon, the arrest of both the gang leaders was a significant achievement.

One way traffic system was introduced in Ambala Sadar. The introduction of the new system helped in considerable improvement in the flow of traffic in the congested Sadar Bazar area.
