Jessica case verdict a blow to Venod Sharma Chandigarh, December 18 Mr Venod Sharma, a prosperous hotelier, was a heavyweight on the state’s political scene because of the trust reposed in him by the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda. When Mr Hooda constituted the Cabinet, the surprise that was in store for most people was according Mr Venod Sharma the status of seniormost member of the Cabinet after the Chief Minister. Mr Chander Mohan was later elevated to the post of Deputy Chief Minister to placate Mr Bhajan Lal, who was then the chief of the HPCC. Mr Venod Sharma then became the senior-most after the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister. He was initially given the important portfolio of Excise and Taxation. Later, Mr Hooda changed his portfolio and made him the Minister for the crucial departments of Power and Public Works. Mr Venod Sharma, who earlier had a stint as a Union Minister, was also made the Chairman of the high-powered Purchase Committee of the state government. Chandigarh was traditionally the place where Mr Venod Sharma had engaged himself in politics, but the connection of his son in the Jessica Lal murder case made the Congress withhold giving of the party ticket to him for the Chandigarh Lok Sabha constituency. Mr Venod Sharma had in fact made a new beginning from Haryana after he won from the Ambala Assembly constituency on the Congress ticket. But the Jessica Lal case again caught up with him. The uproar in the media in the wake of Manu Sharma’s acquittal by a lower court was followed by a sting operation by a web magazine to “expose” how witnesses in the case were allegedly influenced. Mr Venod Sharma finally resigned from the Cabinet on October 6. The Congress tried to give the message that his resignation was secured by the party President, Ms Sonia Gandhi. As things stand now, the revival of Mr Venod Sharma’s political fortunes in Haryana appear to be a tall task. Meanwhile, with the High Court verdict today almost sealing any chance of Mr Venod Sharma getting inducted into the Haryana Cabinet in the near future. |

In trouble for acting against cop’s brother
Fatehabad, December 18 A large number of residents of the local Harnam Colony today met the Deputy Commissioner and the SP in this regard, protesting against the high-handedness of the police official and demanded action against him. Mr Raj Kumar, a resident of the colony, had made a written complaint to the State Vigilance Bureau (SVB) in September that Dr Krishan Kumar, working in the General Hospital, was demanding money for issuing a medico-legal certificate in a case. The SVB on September 7 arrested the doctor while accepting a bribe of Rs 3000 from Mr Raj Kumar. Mr Yash Paul Atwal, state president of the Ambedkar Students Front, and Mr Vinod Chabbarwal, who led the protestors, alleged that Sub Inspector Surender Singh, who is the brother of the doctor, had been coercing Mr Raj Kumar to retract from his earlier statement and make a compromise with Dr Krishan Kumar. The cop and his colleagues, Mr Sukhbir Singh and Mr Karamvir Singh, had also threatened Mr Raj Kumar of implicating him in a false case if he did not relent. Mr Raj Kumar said the cop had now been summoning him to the police station on daily basis since November 27, 2006, on the plea that they had received a complaint against him from a woman. He alleged that the cop and his colleagues had been threatening him that he would land in serious trouble in case he did not turn a hostile witness against the doctor. He said he was ready to face consequences in case he was guilty of any offence. But, he said, the police should register a case against him in that eventuality and not harass him by calling him to police station daily. The SHO, City Police Station, Mr Balbir Singh, when contacted, said he was not aware of any complaint by any women against Mr Raj Kumar. Nor was there any FIR against him in the police station. |
