HC directs Tihar Jail authorities to inspect Bhat’s grave
Srinagar, December 14 The Single Bench of Mr Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir heard the arguments on a petition filed by the Kashmir Bar Association (KBA) stating that Bhat’s grave was being “dismantled” to pave the way for construction of a complex in its place. The KBA was represented by its president Mian Abdul Qayoom while Mr Shabir A Naik was the counsel for the Centre. Mr Justice Mir directed the Tihar Jail Superintendent and the Medical Officer to visit Jail No. 8 for an on-the-spot inspection of the grave of the JKLF leader. He also directed them to submit their report to the court about the present position of Bhat’s grave within six weeks. The next date of hearing would be after two months. Earlier, the Centre, through its counsel, had submitted that Bhat’s grave inside Tihar Jail was intact and ruled out handing over the mortal remains of the JKLF leader to his relatives due to apprehensions that it might create a law and order problem in the strife-torn state. “There is an apprehension that handing over of the mortal remains of Bhat will be turned into an occasion for a mass demonstration that can lead to a large-scale law and order problem,” Mr Naik said. The KBA had moved the High Court seeking directions to the Centre to hand over the remains of Bhat to his relatives or their representatives for a proper burial as there were reports that his grave had been “dismantled” and some construction raised on it. “It has been wrongly mentioned that the grave of Bhat has been dismantled. In fact, the grave is intact and no construction has been raised over it,” Mr Naik added.

Jammu University plans more campuses
Jammu, December 16 This was disclosed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Amitabh Mattoo, while talking to The Tribune here today about the future plans for growth of the campus. He said the aim of the university was to reach out to the most disadvantaged sections of the state. Prof Mattoo said the university received a fillip due to a special package of Rs 30 crore sanctioned by the Prime Minister. The independent resource mobilisation too has increased manifold as the university was able to raise Rs 6 crore out of its own resources. Four years ago, when Mr Mattoo took over the reins of the university, the figure was only about Rs 2 crore. The improved financial position has enabled the university to expand in all corners of the Jammu region. Prof Mattoo, who has completed four years in office, has succeeded in introducing the university abroad. Several prestigious universities of Europe and other countries have taken up joint projects with Jammu University. He said in February several delegates from Canada
would attend an international conference here to cement the relationship between Jammu University and several Canadian universities. In March, teams from some top American universities were scheduled to visit here to begin collaborative projects. Prof Mattoo said that the university could not grow in isolation and it must engage with civil society on a variety of fronts. He said that through these years, the university had also been able to emerge as a think-tank and “we were able to inject ideas into the mainstream of policy making on a variety of issues.” |
LeT militant escaped from jail, says police
Srinagar, December 14 A single Bench of Mr Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir had earlier asked the state police to submit case diaries and other documents regarding LeT militant Rafiq Ahmad Sheikh, alias Mudasir Gujri, alias Raju, from Tilar, Kishtwar, in Doda district of the Jammu region. Gujri’s mother had filed a petition in the High Court seeking its intervention into disappearance of her son from the Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu. Gujri, involved in several militancy-related incidents, including the suicide attack on a Congress rally here on May 21 this year, and carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head, was arrested along with four other accomplices on July 22. He was also involved in attacks on tourists at Dalgate, Kothi Bagh, Ram Munshi Bagh, Ganderbal and Gulmarg and other places in the Kashmir valley. The state police, in reply to the petition, said Gujri escaped from its custody on October 13 in the Janipur area of Jammu where he was taken for recovery of arms and ammunition. The police also informed the court that a constable, Ashok Kumar, had been suspended in connection with the escape, said counsel for the petitioner Jaleel Andrabi. — UNI |
