Appointed
: Dr. Derick Engles has been appointed Dean Faculty of Engineering and Technology of Guru Nanak Dev University up to June 30, 2008, a university press note said here on Wednesday. At present he is Prof and Head of Department of Electronics Technology of the University.

Youth Festival: Guru Nanak Dev University would organise five-day North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival from December 17 to December 21 on the Campus here. Governor of Punjab S.F. Rodrigues, will inaugurate the festival on December 17.

Theft in bank
: Five computers valued of Rs 1 lakh were stolen from the main branch of State Bank of Patiala at Mohrana village near here on Tuesday said bank manager Narinder Sharma. The Amargarh police has registered a case in this regard.

Stone laid
: Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal on Wednesday laid the foundation stones of 66-KV sub-stations at Hamirgarh Dhaipi and Baurewal, near here. She said the government had decided to extend 200 units of free power to below poverty line (BPL) families from December 1 this year and reduced rate of interest on farm loans from 14.5 per cent to 7 per cent.

Encroachments
: Deputy Commissioner Dr Aravinder Singh on Wednesday ordered removal of encroachments on highways and link roads in rural areas. Officials have served legal notices asking removal of the encroachments in seven days. Also transport authorities have been asked to ensure trucks and other heavy vehicles were not allowed to be parked along the national highway-64, use of pressure horns be discouraged.

Bar election
: The election to the president of the local Bar Association will be held on Friday. Mr Kulwant Singh Grewal, Mr Gaurav Chopra and Mr Gurjant Singh Burma have been unanimously elected vice-president, secretary and joint secretary-cum-cashier, respectively, Returning Officer Anil Gupta said here on Thursday.

Bank strike: Employees of all banks here went on a strike on Thursday. They held a rally in front of the Punjab National Bank building. Mr J.P. Singh, zonal secretary of the Punjab Banks employees federation addressed the rally.
