Police launches massive clear-up operation

Swinging into action after allowing the problem to persist for almost eight months, the Chandigarh Police today launched a massive operation to prevent parking of four-wheelers in a lot demarcated for two-wheelers in front of Mehfil restaurant in the city’s downtown.

Employees of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking are divided over the issue of joining the December 14 nationwide strike. The Chandigarh Government Transport Workers Union today held a rally outside the office of the Director Transport, Phase I, Industrial Area, and urged employees to observe a nationwide strike on Dec 14.

Officials unperturbed over fire threat

Huge piles of scrap paper and wood adjacent to the wall of a power sub station in Sector 34, is a perfect setting for a major accidental fire. Officials of the electricity department, seem unperturbed about the issue, much to the fury of the residents.

Flights, trains running late
Chandigarh, December 12
Heavy fog delayed flights and trains coming to the city today. While two of the flights coming to the city were cancelled, the Indian airlines flight arrived two hours late. However, trains departing from the city were on time.

Two juveniles in lock-up
Mohali, December 12
An alleged case of human rights violations by the police came to light when a warrant officer appointed by the high court found two juveniles detained at the Phase-VIII police station during a raid late in the evening.

Two arrested with 5 kg of charas
Chandigarh, December 12
Two Nepalese residents were held with 5 kg of charas worth about Rs 2 lakh from Sector 17 today. According to the police, Nand Lal (22) and Narinder Kumar (20) were arrested from near the fire brigade building and ISBT, respectively.

Watches, cell phones worth 11 lakh stolen
Chandigarh, December 12
Thieves decamped with mobile phones and expensive watches worth about Rs 11 lakh after breaking into a shop — National Watch House in Sector 22. The owner of the shop, Mr Baldev Singh, told TNS that 180 expensive watches worth Rs 3.80 lakh, 110 mobile phones worth about Rs 6.90 lakh and cash worth Rs 50,000 had been stolen from his shop.

Abandoned newborn found in fields
Dera Bassi, December 12
A newborn baby boy was found abandoned in the fields of Mubarikpur village, near here, today. According to sources, the infant was wrapped in a polythene bag and had allegedly been abandoned in the fields belonging to the village sarpanch, Mr Chand Rana.

Mason duped of savings
Panchkula, December 12
A mason was today duped of Rs 5000 by two persons while he was on his way to deposit the money in the bank. The victim Hari Ganesh said that this morning he had gone to the State Bank of India, Sector 10 branch to deposit his labour wages of the last three months.

Two women were hurt in separate road accidents in various parts of the city. According to the police, Ms Rita of Sector 41 suffered injuries after her scooter was hit by another scooter near Sector 36.

Dr Harish Khanna, former Chief Medical Officer of Panjab University, died of a brief illness at his Panchkula residence late last night. He was 77. Dr Khanna had been serving in Panjab University as a consultant on an honorary basis even after retirement.

HIV cases in forces down
Chandigarh, December 12
Proactive measures adopted by the armed forces in combating AIDS has resulted in the number of military personnel testing positive for HIV dropping to just 37 from 300 cases detected three years ago. Revealing this here today, the Director-General Armed Forces Medical Services, Surgeon Vice-Admiral V.K. Singh, said that despite some cases of troops testing positive for the HIV virus, there has been no AIDS case in the services this year.

Night golf comes to city

Night golf has come to Chandigarh. After Delhi and Bangalore, the Chandigarh Golf Club has become the third night-golf destination in the country. The floodlights on nine holes of the club were switched on by the Punjab Governor, Gen S.F Rodrigues, this evening.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has given one-year extension to Mr R.K. Rao, Chandigarh, Deputy Commissioner. Mr Rao will remain as Deputy Commissioner till May 2008. He had joined as DC on May 30, 2005, for two years.
