1 killed, 42 hurt as HRTC bus falls into Beas river
Mandi, November 7
One passenger was killed and 42 others were injured when an HRTC bus (HP19-B-6015) they were travelling in plunged 20 feet down into the Beas riverbed near the Victoria Bridge here at about 11 last night. The condition of 16 injured was stated to be serious.

2 more touts in police net for PMT paper leak
Shimla, November 7
The police has arrested two touts allegedly involved in the HP-CPMT paper leak from Delhi yesterday. One of them, Alok, was engaged in getting Indian students admitted to foreign medical colleges like Russia, Ukraine and China.

In-laws held for killing woman
Nurpur, November 7
The police arrested Tiradu Ram father-in-law, Pritam Chand brother-in-law, Nitu Devi sister-in-law and Ajit Kumar husband of Krishna Devi (35) today for their alleged involvement in killing and burning of Krishna Devi.

Workshop marks Anti-Tobacco Day
Palampur, November 7
On the occasion of Anti-Cancer and Anti-Tobacco Day a district-level workshop was organised by the state Health and Family Welfare Department here today. It was attended by members of the zila parishad, chairmen of various block development committees, panchayat pardhans, social activists and representatives of various volunteer organisations all over the district.

1 killed, 42 hurt as HRTC bus falls into Beas river

Mandi, November 7
One passenger was killed and 42 others were injured when an HRTC bus (HP19-B-6015) they were travelling in plunged 20 feet down into the Beas riverbed near the Victoria Bridge here at about 11 last night. The condition of 16 injured was stated to be serious.

The deceased has been identified Ashok Kumar (28) of Batahan village, Riwalsar, while the three critically injured have been identified as Jivandas, a son of Mr Bhagat Ram, Minakshi Negi from Solan (both referred to the IGMC, Shimla) and Sanjay, who has been referred to the PGI, Chandigarh.

The officiating Medical Superintendent, Zonal Hospital, Mandi, Dr D.K. Arora, said that 26 patients were discharged today.

The accident victims under treatment include Mira Devi, Nathu Ram, Naresh, Ganesh, Ravi, Ravinder, Shayam Parsad, Trilok Chand, Rajesh, Sanjiv Kumar, Umsh and Atul.

The accident victims, Biri Singh from Jogindernagar, Rajesh, a Class XII student from Palampur, Sanjiv Kumar from Bhuntar, Trilok Chand from Jogindernagar, told The Tribune that the driver was gossiping with a person sitting on the bonnet before the accident took place.

The ADC, Mandi, Mr R.S. Gupta who rushed to the spot at about 11.20 p.m. said that residents and youngsters in the surrounding areas rushed to the spot and rescued passengers from the mangled remains of the bus and shifted them to hospital.

Mr Gupta said the district administration had ordered a magisterial inquiry into accident. "A financial aid worth Rs 50,000 has been given to the accident victims, including an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 to next of kin of the diseased. The patients referred to the IGMC and the PGI have been given free ambulance services and financial help", he added.

The Superintendent of Police, Mandi, Mr M. Chander Sekhar, the police had registered a case of negligent driving under Sections 279 and 304-A, IPC, against the driver who had absconded.

Rajya Sabha MP Anil Sharma visited the injured in the hospital.

2 more touts in police net for PMT paper leak

Shimla, November 7
The police has arrested two touts allegedly involved in the HP-CPMT paper leak from Delhi yesterday.

One of them, Alok, was engaged in getting Indian students admitted to foreign medical colleges like Russia, Ukraine and China. He is reported to have arranged the question paper for a candidate who appeared in the Himachal PMT that was later cancelled by the high court.

The other tout, Gupta, is a property dealer. The accused were brought here today for interrogation.

It was only after the arrest of Rafi Muhammad from Karnataka and Vishwajeet from Dehra Dun that the police was able to get information about the involvement of other persons.

In-laws held for killing woman

Nurpur, November 7
The police arrested Tiradu Ram father-in-law, Pritam Chand brother-in-law, Nitu Devi sister-in-law and Ajit Kumar husband of Krishna Devi (35) today for their alleged involvement in killing and burning of Krishna Devi.

According to Mr Vimukat Ranjan DSP, the complainant, Mr Roop Lal of Basroop village in Pathankot tehsil and brother of the deceased, lodged a complaint against the accused that Krishna was killed before setting her ablaze by sprinkling kerosene on her last night.

The complainant alleged that his sister was married to Ajit Kumar, a resident of Taleta village in this subdivision, in 2001 and the in-laws had been harassing and torturing her. The police conducted a post-mortem examination of the body which confirmed the death by burning. — OC

Workshop marks Anti-Tobacco Day

Palampur, November 7
On the occasion of Anti-Cancer and Anti-Tobacco Day a district-level workshop was organised by the state Health and Family Welfare Department here today. It was attended by members of the zila parishad, chairmen of various block development committees, panchayat pardhans, social activists and representatives of various volunteer organisations all over the district.

Presiding over the workshop, Mr Brij Behari Lal Butail, local MLA and Chief Political Adviser to the Chief Minister, called upon the people to stay away from smoking and tobacco. Mr Butail said 40 per cent of cancer cases in India were reported because of use of tobacco.

He expressed concern over the fall in sex ratio in the district and said the state government had decided to award Rs 5 lakh to those panchayats which would have best sex ratio. He said the state government had also announced to initiate stringent measures against those ultra-sound clinics which were indulging in sex-determination test.

Dr H.K. Vasisth, Block Medical Officer, said 50 per cent of cancer cases could be prevented if healthy food was taken and tobacco or alcohol was avoided.
