Not a drop of clean water!

Access to safe water is a fundamental human need and therefore, a basic human right, but children studying in villages of the City Beautiful are being deprived of it.
A visit to some schools has revealed that proper hygiene is not being maintained at these schools.

Healthy India-US-China relations will benefit Asia: Chinese expert
Chandigarh, November 7
Building a healthy India-US-China relations serve the interest of not only the three nations, but would have benefits for Asia as well as the world.
Stating this here today, Chinese arms control expert, Dr Ouyang Liping, said that new and wider areas for cooperation such as energy, maritime security, counter-terrorism, cross-border organised crime and reducing misconception should be explored.

International Film Festival in Goa from Nov 23
Chandigarh, November 7
The 37th International Film Festival of India(IFFI) will be held in Goa from November 23 onwards. The theme of the 11-day festival is 'The Whole World is One Family'.
This was announced by Mr J.P.Singh, Chief Secretary of Goa, while addressing a press conference here today.
Slum dwellers to get one-room flats

The Chandigarh Administration has formulated a one-time scheme ‘The Chandigarh Small Flats Scheme-2006’, which will enable slum dwellers live a life of dignity and self respect. The Finance Secretary, Mr S.K. Sandhu, issued a notification to this effect today.
UPSC files affidavit in Chahal Jr case

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) today filed a rejoinder-affidavit in the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) here, stating that the moderation of answer books of Bikramjit Singh Chahal, son of Punjab Chief Minister’s media adviser

Stone laid by VIP — tale of unkept promise

Come election time and politicians “in connivance” with top bureaucrats promise the moon to the electorate. While some politicians do inaugurate the schemes and projects with much fanfare, the foundation stones tell a different story.

His search for freedom ended in death
Panchkula, November 7
Lying lifeless behind a locked gate, a three-year-old sambhar met death in his search for freedom. Found dead this morning in Industrial Area, Phase 1, the sambhar died due to a head injury, suffered while he tried to jump over the gate to return to where he came from.
Morning to afternoon, he lay at the plot as little children and inquisitive onlookers crowded around the gate, full of pity for the animal as he lay bleeding from the mouth.

Major fire in Lalru scrap shop
Lalru, November 7
A major fire was reported from the township today.
The fire, which first broke out in the shop of a scrap dealer, engulfed the nearby shops. Scrap items, including condemned tyres, copper wires, besides huge quantity of old newspapers, were destroyed in the fire.
Voters’ card drive from today
Mohali, November 7
The work of making photo identity cards for the Kharar constituency in connection with the forthcoming Assembly elections will start tomorrow.
Mr Sandeep Hans, SDM, said today work of making photo identity cards would go on till December 9 and all arrangements in this regard had been completed.

Cop sent to Police Lines

Taking a serious note of gross misconduct on the part of an inebriated Head Constable, who hurled abuses on a woman and her husband at a bus stop on-road separating Sectors 32 and 46 yesterday, the UT Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) today placed him under suspension with immediate effect and sent him to the Police Lines.
Demolition drive carried out
Chandigarh, November 7
A demolition drive was carried out to remove unauthorised structures at Mauli Jagran and Mani Majra. An official said the structures consisted of places of worship, shops and jhuggis which had come up recently.
