I was not insulted: Pawar
New Delhi, November 7 However, Pawar, himself, sought to downplay the incident though, saying the entire thing had been blown out of proportion. “I do not think it is an issue. I was not insulted or embarrassed. The Australians were just excited about winning,” he said. "It is true that all the Australian players had crowded the stage and that I felt a jolt but that was not intentional. I have seen the footage myself. I feel such a small issue should not be hyped this much," Pawar said. Gavaskar condemned the entire incident and said he was not amused when an Australian player greeted Pawar as “hiya buddy.” “I am not amused by one of the Australian players who said ‘hiya buddy’ when he went up to receive his medallion from Mr Pawar,” he was quoted as saying by a Mumbai eveninger. “Just receive it quietly. You are not in your country. In India, we respect our elders. Certain decorum has to be maintained, you have to show respect. Would they have done such a thing to their prime minister?” he said. At the presentation ceremony, Gavaskar gave away the Player of the Series award to Chris Gayle. “I did that and walked to my original position and was then told to go towards the left. It is possible that Mr Pawar forgot his way too. Australia waited all these years to win the Champions Trophy. Surely, they could have waited for Pawar to be escorted by the lady from the ICC rather than nudge him away,” he told Mid-Day. Former cricketer Yashpal Sharma said the BCCI should lodge a complaint with the ICC, the game’s world governing body. “I think that this should be made an issue because it is not an issue concerning a person but the entire nation. Sharad Pawar is a reputed person not only as a leader but also as a good human being,” he said. “I think the entire country should unite on the issue and we should lodge a written complain to the ICC because it is not a small issue. “If Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn say it has happened inadvertently then the ICC should take action otherwise such an incident will recur in future also.” The country’s top politicians also joined the cricketers in condemning the incident. Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh criticised the behaviour of the Aussies towards Pawar, who is also the Union Agriculture Minister and President of the Nationalist Congress Party. “Whatever I saw on television was not a good thing. He (Pawar) is a great leader and the BCCI President. They did not show proper behaviour to him while he was handing over the Trophy. This is very bad,” Deshmukh said. NCP Vice-President Chhagan Bhujbal termed the Australians’ victory antics as shameful. “I think this is a matter of shame. We have loved Australians like Sir Don Bradman, Harvey and others. But the way they behaved, that should be condemned,” Bhujbal said. “Pawar saheb has forgotten (the incident), he will not say anything, but it (is not that) nobody will condemn it,” he added. Sachin Tendulkar and the NCP have also lambasted the Australians for their “uncalled for” behaviour. Some NCP supporters even staged protests in Mumbai today.

Melbourne:
Cricket Australia today said it would investigate into the team’s reported rude nudging of BCCI President Sharad Pawar during the Champions Trophy presentation ceremony in Mumbai.
“The players have only just arrived back in Australia and over the course of the next few days we will be finding out what, if anything, did or did not happen,” CA Spokesman Peter Young said today. Young said the players were very thrilled to have won the mini World Cup and had now dispersed to their respective states. |
Yuvraj’s injury to be re-assessed on Nov 13
Mumbai, November 7 “Yuvraj will be re-examined by Dr Joshi in the presence of team physiotherapist John Gloster and only then can a correct picture emerge about the progress he has made. A media statement would be issued only then,” BCCI’s Chief Administrative Officer Ratnkar Shetty said today. Shetty rubbished television reports today based on quotes from physio Andrew Leipus, a former support staff in the board and said only on November 13 could anything certain be said on the issue. Leipus had indicated to a few mediapersons on the sidelines of the Taylormade-Adidas Corporate Golf event in suburban Chembur today that the nature of injury sustained by Yuvraj indicated that he might not be fit in time for the next year’s World Cup in South Africa. “These types of injuries took four to five months to heal,” according to Leipus who has settled down in Mumbai. Yuvraj has been provisionally included in the Indian one-day squad announced for the South Africa tour, pending his re-assessment before the players’ departure. Yuvraj had injured his left knee on the eve of their crucial Champions Trophy group A match against Australia at Mohali on October 29 while playing kho-kho as a warm-up exercise prior to the net session. The left-hander was advised to follow some exercises and use crutches to take the load off the injured knee by Joshi who examined the player here on October 30.

Lanka ‘A’ in final
Kolkata, November 7 Set a target of 273 for an outright victory, the Lankans seemed headed for doom at 131/6 before Warnapura (111 not out) and Kaushal Silva (65) added 137 for the seventh wicket to pave the way for a victory. A. Ganegama was at the crease with Warnapura as Sri lanka A reached 273/7 in 76.4 overs on the fourth and last day of the Eden Gardens outing. The result made a mockery of South Zone skipper V.V.S Laxman’s decision to declare his team’s second innings at the overnight score of 334/4 to infuse life into the match. Spinner Pragyan Ojha got the first breakthrough in the Lankan essay by sending back Michael Vandort (14) after the openers had put on 51 runs. This triggered a collapse as the Sri Lankans lost three more wickets within a space of 32 runs to be reduced to 83/4. V. Yo Mahesh followed up his three-wicket haul in the opening essay to pluck out Mahela Udawatte (40), skipper T. Samaraweera (4) and Jehan Mubarak (6) to set the alarm bells ringing in the visitors’ camp. Warnapura and Chamara Silva (15) saw their side to lunch without any more damage, but the partnership was over immediately after lunch after the duo was involved in a 48-run stand for the fifth wicket. Mahesh again stole the limelight by sending back Chamara, who was caught behind the stumps. Sri Lanka ‘A’ suffered another setback on the same score as Mahesh struck again two balls later to dismiss Upul Chandana. — PTI North get two points in drawn tie Guwahati: North Zone notched up two points against East Zone by virtue of their first innings lead in the Group-B Duleep Trophy league match which ended in a draw at the Nehru Stadium here today. East Zone resumed their innings at the overnight score of 215 for four, but lost skipper Sourav Ganguly early. Ganguly, who scored a scintillating 118 yesterday, was caught behind off Joginder Sharma before being able to make any progress today. After their skipper's exit, East Zone batsmen fell in quick succession and were all out for 295 runs. For North Zone, Ashish Nehra and Sharma claimed three wickets each. North Zone began their second innings on a promising note with openers Ravneet Ricky and Akash Chopra putting up 62 runs. The match was called off at tea when bad light stopped play. — PTI |

Navy, Air Force move up
Our Sports Reporter
New Delhi, November 7 The Naval boys, playing with short passes, caught the Garhwal Heroes in a knot and slotted home their first goal in the 21st minute when striker Sajid D’Silva made a solo move down the flank and blasted the ball in from an acute angle, which gave no chance to rival custodian Pronoy Roy. A minute into the second session, Navy could have struck again but D’Silva’s fine cross was blazed over by Raju Gurung with the goalkeeper at his mercy. But the tightly-moving Navy boys did not have to wait too long to get their second goal as G.J Sajith neatly headed home a lob from Anand Bhandari in the 21st minute. Indian Air Force flew past Amity United on the strength of a brace from medio V.P. Singh, who hit the target in the 10th and 52nd minutes. Amity salvaged some pride when Tushar intercepted a back pass to shoot past Air Force goalie Bandopadhya for the consolation goal. |
