Playwright in search of logic
Jalandhar, September 6 “I consider my life as an illogical phenomenon. I was the son of my father’s third wife who was 20 years younger to him. Even my grandmother was married thrice. This patriarchy confused me, and at the same time it prodded a search for logic of life”. His shift from poetry to drama was due to his father’s interest in the form as he was a teacher of literature and his proximity to his teacher playwright Gurdial Singh Phul. He wrote his first drama in 1974. His most talked about play “Rishteyan Da Ki Rakhiye Naa” was an adaptation of Saadat Hasan Manto’s famous story “Toba Tek Singh”.He wrote this play in 1981 when the monster of terrorism was raising its ugly head in Punjab. He says, “The play was not just one more play on Partition. It focused on such possibilities. In 1996, he staged the play in Canada. It had music by Sohail Rana, songs by Nazar Sadique, both known artists of Pakistan. This Indo-Pak production remains close to Atamjit’s heart. In “Kamloopes dian Machliyan” he explored dilemmas of Canada-based Indians. Many of his plays didn’t find favour with critics because of their novel themes. One such play was “Puran”, based on “Kissa Bhagat Puran”. His justificaton of Puran’s love for his step-mother didn’t go well with both conservatives and feminists. In “Farash ch Uggeya Rukh”, he explores the probability of extramarital affairs and the latest play “Mai Tan ik Sarangi Han” delves into tribulations of today’s woman. |
