Independence Day celebrated
Jalandhar, August 15 Addressing the gathering on the occasion of the Independence Day celebrations, Mr Samra said the people of India had attained the precious gift of Independence after many sacrifices. “I wish that our countrymen enjoy this freedom forever. I, along with the people of the country, pay tributes to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Lala Lajpat Rai, Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha, Shaheed Udham Singh, and other great freedom fighters who had laid down their lives for their motherland. Those nations which forget their martyrs can never march ahead. So, it is our duty to remember our martyrs,” he said. About the achievements of the Captain Amarinder Singh government, he said though the Congress government had “inherited a huge amount of debt, still it had managed to ensure all-round development of the state”. “ Large amounts of investments being made by industrial houses and businessmen in Punjab are the evidence that the state is marching ahead. The government is taking serious and sincere steps for improving the lot of farmers, and we have ensured that the farmers face no difficulties in the sale of their crops. Apart from the facility of free power worth Rs 439 crore to them, efforts are being made to increase the per-acre yield of their farms. The interest rate on crop loans has been decreased from 14.5 per cent to nine per cent, and loans worth Rs 7429 crore have been disbursed among farmers by cooperative banks of the state during the last financial year. Multi-crop exchange terminals have been established so that crops are able to reach international markets. The Central government has cleared a Women’s Dairy Project worth Rs 8.37 crore,” said the minister. He further said that the Punjab Housefed had disbursed loans worth Rs 109.09 crore during the last financial year, while the Milkfed was making its contribution towards the uplift of dairy owners by purchasing nearly eight lakh litres of milk from them on a daily basis. The state government had already allotted five-marla plots to all 26000 Dalits in different areas of Punjab, he added. The minister distributed 17 tricycles, three wheelchairs, and 14 sewing machines among disabled and needy persons. He also honoured freedom fighters, and announced a grant of Rs 1lakh for the schools that had participated in the function. He announced that all schools of the district would remain closed on August 17. Students from various schools presented a mass PT show, and groups of school and college students presented impressive cultural programmes on the occasion. Mr Hardip Singh Dhillon, IG, Jalandhar, Dr Swaran Singh, Commissioner, Mr Paramjit Singh Gill, DIG, Mr A. Venu Parsad, Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ishwar Singh, SSP, along with Army officers and representatives of various social organisations, were among those who participated in the function. Mr S.M. Seechewal had opposed proposal to discharge sewage into Beas
Kapurthala, August 15 Strongly opposing the proposal in the first meeting of the Kapurthala Development Board (KDB) held at Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh on June 22, Seechewal had asked that if the sewage water was not clean enough to be thrown into the Kali Bein, how could it be proper to throw it into the Beas? The Baba had advised that the sewage water from each village and town should be conveyed via pipelines to farms for irrigation after treating it, as he had done himself in some parts of Sultanpur Lodhi for organic farming. Seechewal had said that the sewage water should not be thrown into the Bein and rivers even after treatment. His advice was generally accepted by all. The Sewerage Department had proposed to install a 16-km long pipeline costing Rs three crore to take sewage water of Sultanpur Lodhi into the Beas. The Baba had also demanded in the meeting that the government declare the Kali Bein a sacred river and Sultanpur Lodhi a sacred city in its real sense. The meeting was presided over by Jalandhar MP Rana Gurjit Singh. Seechewal had attended it as a special invitee. The issue of restoring the purity of the Kali Bein was also discussed in detail. Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements are being made for the proposed visit of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to Sultanpur Lodhi. He would be here to have a closer look at the cleansing work of the Bein on August 17. It was with the relentless efforts of the Baba that led to the cleaning up of the rivulet. He started the kar sewa in July 2000 and his followers helped him in the Herculean task in every possible way. |
