24-hr helpline: The police has started a 24-hour helpline, a verification counter, public complaints counter, information counter and a vehicle inquiry counter from Monday. The police will also help applicants in the settlement of marital disputes, drug de-addiction and in getting free legal help.

Two remanded: The police arrested Swarn Singh, a resident of Bhandari Mohalla and woman, a resident of Thatiari Gate, under Section 109 CrPC on Monday morning near Bhandari Gate. The couple was sent to judicial remand by the court.

Cyclist killed: A cyclist was killed in a road accident here on Tuesday on the Batala-Mehta road. The victim, Mahinder Pal (52) of Achli Gate, was hit by a Qualis van (HR-55A-6274), resulting in his death.

Woman raped: A case of rape of a Dalit woman of Siprian village by Ranbir Singh was reported at Hajipur police station on Monday. The police has registered a case.

Teachers’ stir: The Association of Principals of Non-Government Colleges of Guru Nanak Dev University will cease work on August 18 in support of the agitation by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union.

Salaries sought: The Gazzetted and Non Gazzetted SC/BC Employees Welfare Federation on Monday demanded the release of salaries of ETT teachers who were promoted recently.

2 labourers crushed to death: Two labourers, Yash Pal (24) and Atma Ram (19) were crushed to death under a truck near Nalagarh on Monday. The driver of the truck, Rajinder, who was finding it hard to climb the vehicle through a steep portion of the road, had asked the two labourers accompanying him, to put stones under the rear wheels of the truck. The driver lost control of the vehicle leading to their death.

Film on hill ecology: Navprabhat Society, an NGO working for the environment, has released a documentary, ‘Deodar’, on the degradation of the hill environment by research scholar Mr Shomu Shankar Ray.
