100 children examined at medical camp

Chandigarh, August 9
The majority among 100 colony children, examined at the free medical, dental and eye check-up camp organised at Sood Bhavan, Sector 44, today were found to be nutritionally anaemic. Most of them were also administered de-worming treatment as most of them were also found to be suffering from this disease. The camp was organised in association with the Aruna Asaf Ali Memorial Trust, which is running free classes for the children at Aruna Asaf Ali Bhavan.

Among the doctors who examined the children were Dr Rajinder Kalra, a former Medical Superintendent, PGI; Dr Indra Duggal, child specialist; Dr Tarun Kalra; and Dr Sukhbir Chopra of homoeopathic dispensary, Sood Bhavan.

A team of doctors from the eye department of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, also examined the children.

Free basic blood tests were conducted for these children at Charitable Diagnostic Laboratory run by the Sabha. The camp was also open to the general public.

Mr P.H. Vaishnav, president, Aruna Asaf Ali Trust, and Ms Oshima Raikhy, managing trustee, appreciated the initiative taken by the sabha in organising the camp.

Mr Surinder Sood, general secretary of the sabha, stated that they would arrange periodical check-up and free treatment for these children. Their follow up would also be done.

HIV+ women tie rakhis on volunteers

It was a day with a difference for Kajheri women living with HIV/AIDS as they got to tie “rakhis” on the wrist of voluntary workers who have been helping them fight the stigma as well as the infection. The area is being looked after by the State AIDS Control Society which runs a special targeted intervention project for People Living with HIV/AIDS in the colony. The project at Kajheri is being run by Servants of People Society.

As regards the special event, it was organized with the sole motive of inspiring confidence among infected women who have had a history of discrimination and dejection at home. Volunteers said the idea was to make these women feel comfortable and special. On the whole, the event served to dilute the impact of discrimination.

Capt P.S. Soin who looks after the targeted intervention project for HIV/AIDS awareness in Kajheri area said the occasion was apt to help infected women come out in the open and share the joy of the festive occasion. The women were overwhelmed and happy.

Tejvansh succumbs to Gurinder

The local tennis player Tejvansh Singh succumbed to Gurinder Singh of Punjab in straight sets 1-6, 2-6 in the semifinals of boys under 14 category in Winsome AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament at CLTA Complex, Sector 10 here today.

The Vietnamese pair of Huynh Trang and Pham Binh moved into the finals of girls under 14-Doubles after registering victory over the local duo of Harnnor K Mann and Mehak by 6-2, 7-5.

Coaching Centre-42 team win handball match

Coaching Centre-42(A) beat GNPS-36, 16-8 in the opening girls’ quarterfinal match of the UT State Handball Championship for boys and girls held at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here, today.

Ravneet 6, Rajbir 4, Anita 3 and Anita 4 were the main contributors in CC-42 win while Sukhdeep 5, Inayat 1, Amandeep 1 GNPS-36 team.

The boys’ quarterfinal match between DAV CC-8 and GMSSS-44 was almost one sided affair tie. DAV team thrashed GMSSS-44 team 21-10. Manpreet was the main contributor in DAV’s win as he scored a mammoth nine goals. This was followed by Bharat Bhushan 5 and Abhishek 4. From the loser’s side, Raman scored 3 while Navjot and Ankit contributed 2 goals, each.

In another boys’ match, GMSSS-19 defeated GHS, Sector 7 in a well contested match. From the winners’ side Anjana scored two goals, Shivani Manju and Sarika scored one each. On the other side, Shivani scored two goals while Anjali and Babita scored one goal each.

Akanksha, Asif emerge champs

Akanksha Vohra of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, clinched the women’s title by defeating Farheen of St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45, in a thrilling three- set game 20-6, 7-15, 15-14 in the 16th Chandigarh State Carrom Tournament which concluded at St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45, here today.

The men’s Singles championship title was won by Asif Iqbal, who defeated Mohd. Shazaad 25-12, 25-6.

In the sub-junior section, Hassan of Sikhya Learning School, Sector 46, defeated Arish of St. Stephen’s School won the boys sub-junior title by 25-0, 25-6.

In the girls section, Farheen of St. Stephen’s School won the sub-junior title, defeating Suribhi Hemdan of Mount Carmel School, Sector 9, 24-7,25-0.

Chess carnival on Aug 15, 16

A two-day Prize Money Children’s Chess Carnival will be held at St. Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44-C, on August 15 and 16.

The tournament will be organised by the Chandigarh Chess Academy on behalf of the school. Children from different schools will participate in various age categories, including under-15 (boys and girls), under-11 (boys and girls) and under-9 (boys and girls).

The total prize fund will be Rs 9000, which will be distributed among prize winners along with trophies in various categories. Certificates will also be given to all the participants.
