Installation ceremony put off
: The installation ceremony of three Sikh high priests of the Golden Temple was postponed for the second time on Friday. The SGPC had earlier scheduled the installation ceremony for July 31, which was postponed to August 9 due to the visit of Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, Jathedar, Akal Takht to England. These installation may pave the way for the exit of three granthis of Darbar Sahib, including Jathedar Vedanti who had been given extension after their superannuation.

4 held for stealing power: PSEB officials on Saturday found two shopkeepers of Chheharta area in the suburb of the city stealing power with the help of an electronic gadget. Satish Kumar, resident of Partap Nagar and Lovely Kumar also resident of Partap Bazaar, Chheharta, have been arrested.

Protest by PSEB staff
: Protesting against the proposed outsourcing of their work, PSEB employees on Friday staged a protest in front of the Chief Engineer’s office under the banner of the Joint Struggle Coordination Committee. Addressing the protesters, the committee’s convener, Mr Gurdayal Singh, said they would oppose the policy of outsourcing tooth and nail and would not allow its implementation.

Labourer killed
: A labourer engaged in digging up a stretch near Malwa Public School for laying sewerage died when the trench caved in following a leak in the nearby water pipe on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Ram Singh of Ghunas village of Barnala tehsil.

College competition
: The Youth Club of BLM Girls College organised a ‘Sawan Queen’ competition here on Friday. While Sapna was adjudged ‘Sawan Queen’, Megha and Arshdeep were first, and second runners-up, respectively. Jaspreet Kaur, Deepmala and Ketki won the ‘Best Walk’, ‘Charming Face’ and ‘Best Smile’ awards, respectively. 

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the New Teachers’ Colony Welfare Society: president — Mr Chander Mohan Pinki, senior vice president — Mr Parveen Vij, vice-president — Mr Satish Pathak; general secretary — Mr Parveen Sareen; treasurer — Mr Om Parkash Ahuja; and press secretary — Mr Parveen Duggal.

Saplings planted
: The Shah Satnamji Green S Welfare Society, Dera Sacha Sauda, Sirsa, on Friday launched a district-level tree plantation campaign at the local War Heroes Stadium. Mr M. P. Arora, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sangrur, inaugurated the campaign by planting a sapling of the “sagvan” tree. A large number of devotees of the Dera Sacha Sauda attended the programme. 

Dr Bikram Sharma elected: Dr Bikram Sharma, a Congress municipal councillor, was on Friday elected vice-president of the Sunam Municipal Council at a meeting held at Sunam. Mr Ravinder Singh, SDM, Sunam-cum-Returning Officer for the election, said all 19 municipal councillors and the Sunam MLA Parminder Singh Dhindsa attended the election meeting.

CAO takes charge
: Dr Jawand Singh Hunda on Friday took over as Chief Agriculture Officer (CAO) here. The district-level post of CAO was created after the creation of Tarn Taran as revenue district.

Testing labs to be set up
: Insecticide-testing laboratories will be set up in all districts of the state to save farmers from being cheated by dealers. This was stated by the Chief Administrator of the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Corporation, Ms Navraj Sandhu, while addressing a kisan mela on cotton and paddy crops organised here on Friday. She advised the farmers to use certified products of well-known companies and positively ask for bill from the dealer.

YAMUNANAGAR
Manuscripts documentation survey
: With a view to documenting manuscripts in the state, a survey under the ‘National Mission for Manuscripts’, an ambitious project of the Ministry of Culture, will be carried out between September 4 and 8. Under the project, 12 states of the country have already been covered and as many as two million manuscripts have been located, not only from institutions, but also from private collections, including temples, mutts, madars and ancestral family collections.
