Nepali labourer clubbed to death
Contractor, mason arrested
Ludhiana, July 30
The city police today announced the arrest of a contractor and a mason, who had allegedly clubbed a Nepali labourer to death after they had failed to sodomise him yesterday. The accused arranged jobs for migrant labourers.

Govt to start mobile vans for PDS

To provide some relief to the economically weaker sections of society from the rising prices of essential commodities, the government has decided to revamp the public distribution system in the state. The government will provide rice, flour, pulses and sugar to the people through the PDS.

Hero launches petrol-driven bicycle
Ludhiana, July 30
Hero Cycles launched Cyclomoto, a petrol-driven bicycle, here yesterday. First of its kind in the country, the new power assisted bicycle targets customers in the age group 11-16 years.

Photo: Sayeed Ahmed Offering more accessibility, the local police has for the first time made public all its mobile phones on billboards erected all over the city. The city police has been facing music for the past several years for not being easily approachable to the residents. The police station phone numb- ers were not functioning and cops were not revealing their mobile phones. These billboards can go a long way in establishi- ng direct contact with the senior officials.

Vibhuti Jain City NCC cadet to visit Singapore

The NCC cadet of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sergeant Vibhuti Jain, who was selected for the prestigious Youth Exchange Programme by the Directorate of National Cadets Corps, has been invited by the Singapore Government to participate in National Day Parade there in August this year.

Continue talks with Pak: Raj Babbar

“Waive” interest on residential plots

Lal Bahadur Shashtri Social Forum (Retd) president Mr Sushil Malhotra, Urban Estate Welfare Association Punjab. (retd) general secretary and Mr Shiv Gupta, anti-corruption council of India chairman Mr Dev Dutt Sharma, in a meeting held today have submitted a written memorandum to the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, who is also heading Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, and appealed that interest amount being charged by the PUDA Department on the enhanced prices of the residential plots allotted by the then Urban Estates Department should be waived.

Mr Jaswant Rai Aggarwal, Rotary X-Ray centre was inaugurated by Rotarian Ramesh Rana, District Governor, Rotary Inter-national at S.L. Aggarwal Charitable Hospital here yesterday. The project is funded by a matching grant of $ 15,000 which includes Rotary Club Ludhiana Central, Rotary Club Torry Pines, San Diego USA and the Rotary Foundation USA.

Man held for selling banned drugs
Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 30
The Sudhar police has arrested a man from Leel village in Ludhiana district who claimed to be a medical practitioner. He was allegedly selling and administering drugs and intoxicants to farm labourers and other addicts. A large haul of banned drugs was seized from his possession.

Murderer held, remanded in police custody
Jagraon, July 30
Sidhwan Bet police arrested Shamsher Singh, who allegedly murdered Balwinder Kaur, and seriously injured Shinder Kaur at Gidderwindi village within 24 hours of the commission of the offence and later produced him in court where he was remanded to police custody for two days.

Burglars strike despite cops’ night exercise

Residents of Rani Jhansi Road have put a question mark on the police claims of the massive night domination exercise in the city, when they alleged that a gang of four criminals allegedly lifted bicycles, taps and some other utility items from a number of houses after failing to loot a jewellery shop.

Kids enthral audience

Shobhaniya Kala Kendra held its annual cultural feast here last evening in the Kundan Vidya Mandir School auditorium. Around 50 students enthralled the audience with their striking performances. The programme titled Tirangani was well appreciated. The programme started with a melodic sargam and was followed by shradha set to Kalawati raag in teen taal.
