Demand for filling posts of teacher
Asha Ahuja

Ludhiana, July 30
An executive meeting of members of Shree Manav Sewa Welfare Bureau (SMSWB) was held here to discuss problems of the teaching community in connection with non-fulfilment of vacant posts in government /private public institutions.

Mr Ashok Jain, general secretary of the organisation, regretted that the state government was not issuing appointment letters to lecturers in English college cadre in spite of their selections made by Punjab Public Service Commission in 2000-2001 and reconducted in 2004 against the vacancies of 1999 though the process of medical examination and character verification got done one year back by the relevant departments.

Mr Jain also added that no pensions benefits are being made to government recognised private grant-in-aid retired teachers who retired after May 31, 2003.

Dr S.K. Thaman, chairman, Shree Manav Sewa Welfare Bureau, pointed out that no vacant posts had been filled in government/private colleges and schools for the past four years causing harassment to degree holders. The fate of nation- builders hung in balance despite various agitations.

The general secretary pointed out that the ad hoc/contract system of appointing lecturers/teachers under the government control should be scrapped to avoid damage of the basic structure of teaching profession.

It was added that there was no need to celebrate Teachers Day if no respect is to be given to teaching community.
