Thapar elected NIMA president

Dr Rajesh Thapar and Dr Surendra Gupta were unanimously re-elected president and secretary of the district chapter of National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA) at its general body meeting held here on today. Dr K.K. Kharbanada was also re-elected treasure of the body.

According to Dr Surendra Gupta, the elections were conducted by returning officer Dr Ram Pabby strictly as per the constitution along with Dr Anil Joshi, observer of the state branch of NIMA.

The delegates elected a 20-member executive committee for the district branch which later held a meeting to elect the office-bearers. The elected officer-bearers were also empowered by the general house to nominate other office-bearers for smooth running the affairs of the association.

Others elected to the executive committee included Dr K.K. Sharma, Dr Satinder Kakkar, Dr Pardip Nagrath, Dr PPS Arora, Dr Ashok Puri, Dr Sarjiwan Sharma, Dr Paramjit Singh, Dr M.S. Dhaliwal, Dr Yogesh Passi, Dr Dharam Pal Goyal, Dr Ranbir Singh, Dr R.K. Garg, Dr Jagdev Kehal, Dr Inder Sharma, Dr Ashok Verma, Dr Ravinder Bajaj and Dr Avtar Singh.

Mansa lads, Ropar eves emerge champions

Holders Mansa in the boys’ section and Ropar in the girls’ section emerged champions in the 33rd Punjab State Sub Junior Basketball Championship which concluded at Nehru Memorial College (indoor stadium), Mansa, yesterday.

The title clash in the boys’ section between Mansa and the Baba Lodhiana Academy of Ludhiana turned out to be a ding-dong battle with the lead exchanging hands. The match was decided in extra time since after the regular period of 40 minutes, the two teams were tied at 36-36. Mansa boys scored one-point victory.

During the extra time, with just 20 seconds to go for the long hooter, the Baba Lodhiana Academy lads were enjoying one point lead (45-44) and Satnam Singh of Academy missed scoring opportunity. His attempt to score two pointer went abegging. However, Mansa lads kept their composure and netted two valuable points in the dying minutes to wrap up the title with slender margin.

In the hard-line cup match, Bathinda thrashed Ludhiana 48-23 to secure the third position.

In the girls’ section, Ropar registered a comfortable (36-22) win over Ludhiana district to clinch the title. In the match to decide third place, Sangrur beat Faridkot 18-16.

On the basis of their performance during this tournament, 20 boys and as many girls have been selected to attend the coaching camps to be held at Mansa (boys) and Bathinda (girls) from August 5 onwards.

At the conclusion of these camps, the Punjab squads will be finalised for the 33rd National Sub Junior Basketball Championship slated to be held from August 28 to September 3 at Kolkata, according to Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, secretary, Punjab Basketball Association.
